Is Ryan Malone really worth 7 million?

Over the last few days we've seen all kinds of weird trades, some may change the course of an entire franchise just like the Toronto Maple Leafs/New York Islanders trade at the draft, while others seem to be a quick fix to an overwhelming lack of scoring, just like the Tampa bay Lightning/Pittsburgh Penguins deal.

Let The Impulse Buying Commence!

The Tampa Bay Lightning have kicked off free agency with a bang by signing now former Pittsburgh Penguins left wingers Ryan Malone and Gary Roberts to new contracts. The Malone deal $31.5 million over 7 years, is sure to raise a few eyebrows. However, the new Lightning owners were actually very shrewd in the way they structured it. There are some though who believe these deals will have a bigger impact on the Lightning roster down the line.

NHL Trades: What Is and What Will Never Be

Alas, The Rangers won't be acquiring Dan Boyle, who signed a long-term deal with Tampa Bay yesterday. Nor will they be trading for Barret Jackman, who signed a contract extension (details undisclosed) with the St. Louis Blues.

Injury to Mara Could Force Sather's Hand

According to ESPN, Mara is scheduled for facial surgery. Ouch.

Ironically, Mara was the team's sole deadline acquisition last season. This development signals two things to me, A) GM Glen Sather is very unlikely to move Marek Malik, who is no longer expendable, regardless of his issues with coach Tom Renney, and B) It seems hard to believe that one of Dan Boyle or Brian Campbell won't find their way into a Rangers sweater by tomorrow's trade deadline. Unfortunately, it's likewise difficult to imagine either player arriving without costing a player such as Nigel Dawes. I'd be a bit less reluctant to part with Petr Prucha, whose star has dimmed considerably since his breakout rookie year, however Prucha has recently battled a separated shoulder, which can't help his trade value.

3 Days Until Deadline: Flyers Trade Rumors

What will the Flyers do? A few weeks ago, when they sat near the top of the Eastern Conference, they figured to make a couple of small moves to gear up for the home stretch. Now, as they slip out of playoff contention, they could either go for broke and make some big moves, or do absolutely nothing. I would bet the Flyers do the latter.

I weigh in on the Flyers chances of getting Kaberle, Suter, Boyle, Richards or Kessel

Hot Stove: Rangers Trade Rumors

The most recent rumor has been that the Rangers are targeting Dan Boyle of the Tampa Bay Lightning. Boyle is in the final year of his contract and it is likely that any deal he signs will be worth about $6 million per season, which means he would probably only be a rental for the Rangers. Boyle also has a no-trade clause in his contract, although according to the NY Post, he is willing to waive that in order to become a Ranger.

The Blueshirts have also made an offer to the Buffalo Sabres for offensive defenseman Brian Campbell according to the Toronto Sun. Campbell is another potential unrestricted free-agent on the lookout for a big contract this off-season. Because the Rangers are restricted on cap space and already need to resign Michal Rozsival, Campbell would likely only be a rental player, but one who could have a great effect on the Rangers' power play.
