Bulls v. Celtics, Game 7: Third Quarter

TNT informs us that the Bulls' largest second half comeback this year was from 10 down; that's not promising much drama, really. Salmons misses, but Perkins turns. Nice ball movement leads to a Rose jumper, and it's 52-40, first field goal in nearly nine minutes. Thomas blocks Davis and foul call is late but correct; I suspect that if Davis had blood on his face, that would have been called a flagrant. Davis makes the first only. Thomas off a drive from Gordon, and Davis is blocke...

Bradger On A Hundred Thousand Trillion

Remember back when I almost killed Brad Miller? That was a really dark time in my life. The world had turned to grey, and I thought I'd blown if for the Bulls and for Brad Miller. Maybe I had cursed him. Like I always do, I listened to The Fray's "How to Save a Life" on repeat. As the song played over and over and over again, I found myself asking where did I go wrong? I had truly lost a friend, somewhere in the bitterness. I didn't understand it, really. Yeah, I'd p...

I Think I Killed Brad Miller

Remember when I unearthed the video of Brad Miller cutting off his beard? That was a really emotional video that deeply affected me emotionally. And I've regretted it to this day. I'm even pretty sure that showing that video killed Brad Miller. On the inside. It's been basically the hardest three weeks of my life, dealing with the death of Brad Miller. Since then, his points per game, rebounds per game, assists per game, and field goal percentage have gone down. And his turnovers p...

Breaking down last night's NBA playoff action

On today’s show, we wonder if the Spurs “dynasty” is over, if Lakers fans should be worried, and whether Dwight Howard should be suspended. We also break down Game 5 of the Bulls-Celtics series: Brad Miller’s free throw troubles, Paul Pierce’s return to dominance and Vinny Del Negro’s flubs.

NCAA Playoff Linkorama

Here are a couple of things that I found on line pretaining to UND Fighting Sioux hockey. Here is what Bruce Ciskie had to say about UND.
2. North Dakota Fighting Sioux (24-14-4)Western Collegiate Hockey Association --- At-large bid

A week ago, North Dakota looked almost unstoppable, as they entered the WCHA Final Five on a 15-2-3 run. The Sioux were tripped up in St. Paul, however, losing twice and scoring only one goal in the two games. Did this sudden slump happen at the right time, or is it a precursor to an early exit? History suggests the Fighting Sioux will be just fine, as they have been to four straight Frozen Fours.

Team Leaders
F Ryan Duncan, 19-19-38; D Brad Miller, 6-29-35; G Brad Eidsness, 24-11-4, 2.47, .908 saves

NHL Fans Should Watch
UND has two freshmen - Jason Gregoire (N.Y. Islanders) and Brett Hextall (Phoenix) - who have developed into offensive threats. They skate as wingers on Duncan's line. Gregoire is more of a skill player, while Hextall is an absolute pest who possesses a ton of skill to go with it. He's a fearless player who probably needs to cut back on his penalty minutes (team-high 91 this season).

Under The Radar
Duncan won a Hobey Baker Award two years ago, and has proceeded to not be a finalist either of the last two seasons. He's averaged over a point per game in his four years at UND. Duncan is undersized, has a huge heart, and will score goals at any level.

Fun Fact
An incredible eight current North Dakota players have relatives who played for the Fighting Sioux (talk about building a legacy). Included in that are Darcy Zajac, brother of current New Jersey Devil Travis, and David Toews, whose brother Jonathan is captain of the Chicago Blackhawks.
Goon's World was linked up today by master blogger Greg Wyshynski of Puck Daddy. Unforunately he got it wrong by saying that UND didn't make the cut because the Fighting Sioux are a two seed in the North East Regional.
Although the Fighting Sioux didn't make the cut, Goon's World remains one of our primary sources for great college hockey news and analysis.
Here is what the Hoover Street Rag had to say about the UND Fighting Sioux.
One of the WCHA's traditional powers, the Fighting Sioux built off last season's Frozen Four appearance by winning MacNaughton Cup, awarded to the WCHA's regular season title for the first time since 2003-04. This was a dramatic change from the three game losing skid to open the season, which included a 5-1 drubbing by Boston University in the season opener. Standing 5-8-1 at the end of November, the Sioux put together a nice four game run in early December, only to bottom out with a fourth place finish at the Great Lakes Invitational in Detroit, losing to Michigan State and Michigan Tech. This down point was combined with the loss of senior defenseman Joe Finley, who had missed two months due to the lingering effects of a concussion.

But, in classic North Dakota fashion, the Sioux have rallied in the second half of the season to put themselves right in the mix of the NCAA playoff picture. In the 19games since 2009 began, the Sioux have won 14, against two losses (to Saint Cloud and Wisconsin) and three ties. The Sioux's defense is not their hallmark, but they also clearly score enough goals to make you pay for any lapses they may have on the blue line. The return of Finley, a first round NHL pick, has galvanized the leadership positions of the team while providing stability on defense. North Dakota's WCHA playoff run in Minneapolis, however, hit the stellar goaltending of Minnesota-Duluth's Alex Stalock, sending the Sioux to the consolation game.

Fighting Sioux 5 Real Huskies 1

Last night's game started out slow and was a little boring to watch but the game picked up and ended with a bang. It appeared that maybe at the start of the game the Fighting Sioux were grasping the sticks a little tight and they could have been a little nervous. To start the game I thought the Fighting Sioux also looked a little out of sync but they did manage to get their legs moving as the game progressed. The kind of broke the game open in the second period as they put seventeen shots on net getting two past Rob Nolan.

MTU no cupcake

Make no mistake about it, MTU is a tough team to play against. The Minnesota Gophers were bitten by them last weekend. The Huskies are the masters of clogging up the neutral zone and take away space to perfection. They also do a good job at taking away the passing lanes. If anything this is a good preparation for the games ahead. In the playoffs the games become tighter and you can't take a minute off or face the possibility of getting buried. One untimely turnover can spell doom. Rewind to last years frozen four.

Zajac still golden

The Fighting Sioux got another goal from Darcy Zajac this time a short handed goal keeping another impressive streak alive. When Fighting Sioux forward Zajac scores a goal UND has never lost a game. This season Zajac has scored some pretty nice goals, I thought last nights was a thing of beauty. Zajac has been contributing on the defensive side and well as offensively and has five points in the past eight games (3-2-5). Zajac has also almost equaled his point totals of his first two seasons at UND as Zajac has (5-12-17) for the season and his first point total for his first two seasons (11-7-18).

Ryan Ducan’s swan song

As Sioux fans we are watching Ryan Duncan’s swan song (final theatrical or dramatic appearance) and I have to say that I am going to miss watching this kid play for the Sioux because he has a knack for scoring big goals at the right time. Last night Ryan Duncan scored a nice power play goal in the second period to get Sioux going. Even without Oshie or Toews Ryan Duncan continues playing at a high level

-------------------Box score-------------------
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1st Period (20:00)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

MTU-1 Derek Kitti (2-Boarding) NDK 0x1 5:49
MTU-2 Derek Kitti (2-Unsportsmanlike Conduct) 14:45
NDK-1 Andrew Kozek (2-Hooking) 14:45
NDK-2 Brad Malone (2-Roughing) MTU 0x1 14:45
NDK 1 - 0 6x6 LL Chris VandeVelde (15) (Matt Frattin, Brad Miller) 17:04
NDK (+): 29,21,14,24,19,G31 MTU (-): 7,21,27,23,20,G37

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2nd Period (20:00)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

MTU-3 Jordan Baker (2-Slashing) NDK 1x2 2:40
NDK 2 - 0 6x5 PP GW Ryan Duncan (16) (Brad Miller) 3:00
NDK: 16,14,26,29,25,G31 MTU: 28,13,20,12,G37
NDK-3 Mario Lamoureux (2-Hooking) MTU 0x2 3:48
NDK 3 - 0 6x6 Evan Trupp (7) (Chris VandeVelde, Matt Frattin) 6:08
NDK (+): 19,29,21,14,24,G31 MTU (-): 19,5,23,14,18,G37
MTU-4 Ryan Bunger (2-Holding) NDK 1x3 6:55
MTU-5 Drew Dobson (2-Boarding) NDK 1x4 7:34
NDK-4 Andrew Kozek (2-CTH HIGH-STICKING) MTU 0x3 10:18
MTU-6 Ricky Doriott (2-Hooking) NDK 1x5 18:37

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
3rd Period (20:00)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

MTU-7 Drew Dobson (2-Tripping) NDK 1x6 3:00
NDK-5 Brett Hextall (2-Roughing) MTU 1x4 4:47
MTU 1 - 3 6x5 PP Alex MacLeod (5) (John Schwarz, Alex Gagne) 6:13
MTU: 14,10,18,5,19,G37 NDK: 20,5,2,11,G31
NDK-6 Joe Finley (2-Cross-Checking) MTU 1x5 8:44
NDK 4 - 1 5x6 SH Darcy Zajac (5) (Chay Genoway) 10:31
NDK (+): 11,5,29,14,G31 MTU (-): 17,12,16,26,22,G37
NDK 5 - 1 6x6 Mario Lamoureux (3) (Brad Miller, Ben Blood) 11:13
NDK (+): 9,14,24,10,22,G31 MTU (-): 27,21,10,26,7,G37
MTU-8 Alex MacLeod (2-Holding the Stick) NDK 1x7 11:40
MTU-9 Eli Vlaisavljevich (2-Cross-Checking) NDK 1x8 16:12
MTU-10 Justin St. Louis (2-Roughing) 17:11
NDK-7 Darcy Zajac (2-Roughing) 17:11
NDK-8 Matt Watkins (2-Goaltender Interference) MTU 1x6 17:11
MTU-11 BENCH (2-TOO MANY PLAYERS ON ICE) (Served by Bryce Reddick) NDK 1x9 19:10

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
End of Game
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sioux 4 - Purple Cows 1

The Fighting Sioux's road to the NCAA tourney is not going to be a gimme or a slam dunk, they are going to have to work for it. The Fighting Sioux must keep winning if they want to play past the WCHA playoffs. Tonight was the first step in the right direction on a long road. The road to the NCAA playoffs doesn't get easier and the Mavericks will come out tomorrow guns blazing. The Sioux must be ready and can't take a shift off, they must play a complete disciplined game like they did tonight. If the Fighting Sioux can continue their pace and their current path they could very well finish a top of the WCHA. Tomorrow night the Sioux can not get wrapped up in the after the whistle bravo sierra.

The effort tonight was impressive as the Fighting Sioux out worked, out hustled and pretty much had their way with the Mavericks tonight. If it wasn't for Mike Zacharias the score could have been 10-1. The Fighting Sioux had the Mavericks on their heals all night and improved their record to 9-1-1 in the last 11 games against the Minnesota State University Mavericks.

Tonight I was even more impressed with the play of LGM's favorite Sioux player Big Joe Finley who had missed 16 games at the beginning of the season with a head injury. Big Joe has come back to the line up and been a major force on the blue line. I would have to say that the last three series Big Joe has taken a big leadership role on the ice for the Fighting Sioux.

Brad Miller was impressive with his two goals on the evening. It nice to see Miller chipping in after missing many games the first three years of his UND hockey career.
Sioux 1 MSU 2 (Unacceptable)

The <strike>Fighting</strike> Sioux play an uninspired game against a horrible Michigan State University team (a team that hadn't won a game in 12 games) and lose 2-1. This type of play is not acceptable if the Sioux have any hope of making the NCAA tourney. Playing like this is not the way to make the Final Five either. By squandering games like this one, the Sioux are hammering the nails in the Fighting Sioux's NCAA playoff coffin. They Fighting Sioux must right the ship now if they want to do anything this season. I hope the coaches and players spare us the cute sports cliches. I am sick and tired of hearing how we are so close to playing really good and clicking. Stop talking and just play hockey.

The only bright spot for the Fighting Sioux was the play of <strike>Fighting</strike> Sioux freshman goalie Brad Eidsness. For their efforts the <strike>Fighting</strike> Sioux get to play Michigan Tech University and if they play like they did tonight they could end up losing the game to real Huskies as well.

Positive(s)

*The play of Freshman goalie Brad Eidsness.

*Miller and Genoway continue to play good on defense.

*Big Joe Finley is back after missing 18 games.

Negative(s)

*Very little shots inside the dots against MSU, a good goalie like Lerg is going to see shots from the perimeter and stop them every time. You need to get traffic in front of the net. The Sioux did not.

*Horrible effort by the Fighting Sioux forwards as they played dump and chase all night and then when they dumped the puck in the offensive zone they were beat to the puck by MSU defense.

*Taking stupid penalties at bad times during the game.

*Lack of cycle down deep in the Spartans zone.

Box Score

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1st Period (20:00)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

NDK-1 Brad Malone (2-Kneeing) MSU 0x1 2:28
MSU-1 Andrew Conboy (2-Charging) NDK 0x1 4:10
NDK-2 Andrew Kozek (2-Interference) MSU 1x2 6:48
MSU 1 - 0 6x5 PP LL Matt Schepke (8) (Corey Tropp, Joey Shean) 7:14
MSU: 24,25,19,7,2,G1 NDK: 17,16,25,6,G31
NDK-3 Brett Hextall (2-Holding the Stick) 8:19
NDK-4 Brett Hextall (2-Slashing) (Served by Andrew Kozek) MSU 1x3 8:19
MSU-2 Jay Sprague (2-Interference) 8:19
MSU-3 Andrew Conboy (2-Charging) NDK 0x2 9:16

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2nd Period (20:00)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

MSU 2 - 0 6x6 GW Matt Schepke (9) (Corey Tropp) 1:39
MSU (+): 24,25,2,19,5,G1 NDK (-): 17,14,18,21,2,G31
MSU-4 Andrew Rowe (2-Hooking) NDK 0x3 8:41
NDK-5 Jason Gregoire (2-Interference) MSU 1x4 9:32

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
3rd Period (20:00)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

MSU-5 Matt Schepke (2-Tripping) NDK 0x4 0:23
NDK-6 Joe Finley (2-Tripping) MSU 1x5 5:10
NDK-7 Chay Genoway (2-Hooking) MSU 1x6 5:50
NDK-8 Derrick LaPoint (2-O-HOLDING) MSU 1x7 13:35
MSU-6 Jay Sprague (2-Slashing) NDK 1x5 14:42
NDK 1 - 2 6x5 PP Matt Frattin (8) (Chay Genoway, Brad Miller) 16:35
NDK: 21,5,14,19,17,G31 MSU: 21,25,24,5,G1

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
 End of Game

Sioux sweep Harvard 4-3.

The Fighting Sioux finally get their first series sweep of the season against the Harvard Crimson.

First off this game was tough to watch. The two people calling the game for the Harvard broadcast were absolutely horrible. These two Skippys from the Harvard broadcast team need to go to back Remedial Hockey 101 classes. These two guys were messing up basic hockey knowledge facts and it takes away from the hockey broadcast. Just because a player hits someone into the end boards or side boards, as long as it isn't result of a player taking more than three steps or if the opposition player doesn't chop his opponent face first into the boards it is not a penalty: you can't invent one just because it was hard check. Now if the opposition player is checking a person that isn't the puck carrier, that is interference.

Second the officials for tonight's game weren't even up to WCHA standards so they were God awful as well. To call a player for goalie interference, that player would actually have to interfere with the goalie. Standing in front of him without making contact is not interference. That was a brutal call.

Positives from tonight's game

~Jake Marto was a +1 for the night and +2 on the weekend.

~David Toews had three points on the weekend and is now (2-3-5) on the season.

~Ryan Duncan had two points tonight (1-1-2). That gives Duncan three points on the weekend and (6-8-14) on the season.

~Senior Ryan Martens was solid all weekend. Martens got another assist tonight to go along with six points last night. That would give Ryan Martens (5-6-11) points on the season eclipsing last season's (1-9-10) point total.

~For the Eidsness doubters; freshman goalie Brad Eidsness is now 7-5-1 and has a GAA of 2.67 and a SV% of .911. I have said this before, Eidsness was brought in to be the starter and should remain in that role. Walski's role should be on the bench, opening the players door and taking goalie stats. Unless Walski can stop .911 percent of the shots he faces, he isn't starter material. I don't see that happening based on his performance so far this season.

~The Fighting Sioux have now scored 22 goals in 4 games (7-1-10-4).

~Since losing the first three games of the season the Sioux are 7-5-1. I know it is a cliche folks, but I try to look for the silver linings. I am not a negative person by nature and I can only be negative for so long before I have to look at the positives. I have said before that I don't think UND is as bad as some think they are.

Box score

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1st Period (20:00)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

NDK-1 Chris VandeVelde (2-Tripping) HAR 1x1 0:33
NDK-2 Brad Malone (2-Hitting from Behind) HAR 1x2 1:50
HAR 1 - 0 6x4 PP Alex Killorn (3) (Michael Biega, Alex Biega) 2:07
HAR: 21,23,27,15,3,G34 NDK: 3,20,5,G31
HAR-1 Doug Rogers (2-Boarding) NDK 1x1 5:08
HAR-2 Pier-Olivier Michaud (2-High-Sticking) NDK 1x2 5:53
NDK 1 - 1 6x4 PP Ryan Duncan (6) (Brad Miller) 6:59
NDK: 16,14,29,26,5,G31 HAR: 9,7,28,G34
HAR-3 Chad Morin (2-Hooking) NDK 2x3 7:37
NDK 2 - 1 6x5 PP Chay Genoway (2) (Ryan Duncan, Chris VandeVelde) 7:53
NDK: 5,16,26,14,29,G31
NDK-3 Corey Fienhage (2-Hitting from Behind) HAR 1x3 9:21
NDK-4 Brad Malone (2-HITTING AFTER WHISTLE) HAR 1x4 11:38
NDK-5 Chris VandeVelde (10-Game Misconduct) 13:15
NDK-6 Chris VandeVelde (5-Hitting from Behind) (Served by Brent Davidson) HAR 1x5 13:15

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2nd Period (20:00)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

HAR-4 Alex Killorn (2-High-Sticking) NDK 2x4 2:24
HAR 2 - 2 6x6 Michael Del Mauro (2) (Chad Morin, Daniel Moriarty) 9:54
HAR (+): 7,11,27,28,13,G34 NDK (-): 16,26,10,14,6,G31
NDK-7 Brett Hextall (2-Interference) HAR 1x6 16:01
Timeout - Harvard 16:01
NDK-8 Brett Hextall (2-CONTACT TO THE HEAD) HAR 2x7 19:52

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
3rd Period (20:00)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

HAR 3 - 2 6x5 PP Daniel Moriarty (2) (Pier-Olivier Michaud, Michael Biega) 0:08
HAR: 11,39,27,15,3,G34 NDK: 5,11,3,20,G31
NDK-9 BENCH (2-TOO MANY PLAYERS ON ICE) (Served by David Toews) HAR 2x8 1:20
HAR-5 Jimmy Fraser (2-Boarding) NDK 3x5 5:44
NDK 3 - 3 6x5 PP David Toews (2) (Ryan Martens, Jake Marto) 6:03
NDK: 18,8,25,20,21,G31 HAR: 28,7,12,39,G34
NDK 4 - 3 6x6 GW LL Matt Frattin (7) (Brad Malone, David Toews) 7:33
NDK (+): 21,25,18,4,22,G31 HAR (-): 7,11,13,27,28,G34

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
 End of Game

Dear Brad Miller: Get A Freaking Dishwasher

Brad Miller is a game time decision for tonight's game against Seattle. The reason? He cut his finger washing dishes. In fact, he cut it so bad that the cut required nine stitches. The team doctor's are worried that the stitches might come causing a good bit of bleeding. After sucking all of last year, Miller has gotten back to his usual productivity. He is the current Western Conference Player of the Week. Unfortunately, it looks like he celebrated by washing dishes with a chainsaw.
