Every Dowd Has a Silver Lining

This is Jim Dowd. He played 70 games for the Oilers, scoring 5 goals. Picked him up in a deal that sent Greg DeVries away and lost him in the expansion draft in 2000 (Minnesota).Dowd played on a line with Boyd Devereaux and Georges Laraque and that 4line could rattle and hum. He killed penalties and he contributed a little on offense and he could win a faceoff and move up the depth chart and not look foolish.Jim Dowd was an extremely useful player, and the Oilers could use the new Jim Dowd r...

BT's 2009/10 NHL Season Preview: Toronto Maple Leafs

Once again, we finish off the season previews with the Toronto Maple Leafs—the only point throughout these at which I show any bias (unless you're a New York Ranger fan who took some sort of offense to the Rangers' preview).
While the ending point is the same as last year, where the Leafs are at this point this year is vastly different.
Like the Montreal Canadiens, Ottawa Senators, and Buffalo Sabres before them, the Leafs have a shot at second place if they can answer the quest...

The Toronto Maple Leafs' 2009-10 Season Preview

I will be previewing all 30 NHL clubs. I will be looking at their available salary cap room, the additions and deletions from the 2008-09 rosters, and where I think they will stack up in their division and conference for the 2009-10 campaign.
Let's get a move on with the Toronto Maple Leafs, which play in the Northeast Division of the Eastern Conference.
When Brian Burke was hired as the new General Manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs, he promised a return to the ...

Training Camp Hopeful #3: Jordan Eberle

Despite what some will say, the Oilers don't often fast track their draft picks. In this decade, only Ales Hemsky (at age 19) and Sam Gagner (straight out of the draft) made the team before graduation day. The two elevations are positively minor compared to the mid-90's when players like Boyd Devereaux, Jason Bonsignore and Steve Kelly (along with Ryan Smyth) were fast tracked by the team's management. In fact, a simple way to look at the Oilers and fast tracking is this: if they&...

Canadiens Lead Northeast in Total Free Agents

On Wednesday afternoon, the NHL Free Agent Market will open up, allowing teams to negotiate deals with potential future players. While most fans around New England are keeping a close eye on Phil Kessel, the Boston Bruins are in relatively good shape as the final hours tick away. On the other hand, the Montreal Canadiens have some serious work to do, as 28 players will become free agents on Wednesday. With 25 free agents, the Toronto Maple Leafs have the second highest total in the Northeast ...

The Canadiens Move Up to Seventh in the Playoff Race

Saturday night's 6-2 convincing win over the Toronto Maple Leafs provided the Canadiens with a little breathing room in the race for the playoffs. They moved up to seventh in the Easter Conference standings, with 4 games to play.THE GOOD: Montreal wins 6-2 against Toronto. Three goals scored on the power play. Balanced scoring as Kovalev, Latendresse, Tanguay, Higgins, Gorges, and Lapierre all score. Halak solid in net for a flu-ridden Price, who's also playing well of late. THE BAD: Tanguay coughing up the puck to Toronto's Boyd Devereaux, who scored a short-handed goal in the third period. THE UGLY: The blue line took a serious hit when both Schneider AND Markov left the game with 'upper-body injuries'. THE RESULT: Montreal is in seventh, 3 points ahead of the eighth place Rangers and Panthers (who are now tied.) They still have one game in hand against both of those teams, and sit only 1 point behind the sixth place Penguins. The Canadiens finish off the season with 4 games in 6 nights, with two of those games against the Rangers and the Penguins.
Toronto Maple Leafs: Nine Tips to Improve Media Coverage

I think we'd all agree that there certainly couldn't be much more Leafs coverage. There are upwards of 30 reporters covering the Leafs. To put that in perspective, there are 31 journalists assigned to Queen's Park (the Province of Ontario's legislature).

In addition to having their own TV channel, the Leafs are the lead item on each and every TSN and Sportsnet broadcast. Each paper has columnists and staff reporters covering the team. There are lunch time radio broadcasts d...
