DiPietro Preparing To Play

from Dan Martin of the NY Post,

With the Islanders in Carolina, preparing to play yet another game without their franchise goalie tonight, Rick DiPietro was working out at Iceworks in Syosset yesterday, still likely at least a month away from his return to an NHL game.

The 28-year-old is acutely aware that he has become known more for his propensity for getting injured than the fact that he’s a former All-Star.

“I have to keep telling myself that I have a lot of years left and n...

Will Team USA's goalie depth lead to 2010 medal?

Taking a gander at the three U.S. Men's Olympic hockey team rosters since 1998 there's one prominent trait that's lacking: goaltending depth. The keepers in question:1998: Mike Richter, Guy Hebert, John Vanbiesbrouck2002: Mike Richter, Tom Barrasso, Mike Dunham(notes)2006: Rick DiPietro(notes), Robert Esche(notes), John Grahame(notes)Team USA's No. 1 netminder was an obvious choice all three years, and known in advance. Richter was still the man after his performance in the 19...

On the Beat: Rick DiPietro has entered the building

What team beat writers are saying this afternoon:

“Andrei Markov has told management he doesn’t want to be captain“, writes Pat Hickey of the Montreal Gazette. You would have to believe that head coach Jacques Martin will ask Scott Gomez or Roman Hamrlik next. Who else is there? Is Carey Price going to become the next [...]

by Kevin SchultzFiled under: Islanders, NHL Free Agency, NHL InjuriesThe New York Islanders have been mum on the subject of Rick DiPietro and his injured knee and hips since the goaltender was shutdown for the season back in January. Since then, rumors have floated around the internet of fans seeing DiPietro still on crutches as recently as May and other unfounded rumors. Nothing has been confirmed and no official word has come from the team aside from repeating their statement that 'DiPi...

Rick DiPietro's Hips Don't Lie

On September 19th of 2006, I was a little shocked to hear that the New York Islanders signed their goalie, Rick DiPietro, to a 15-year deal that would pay him $67.5 million over the duration of the contract. It made DiPietro the 8th highest paid goalie at the time, and locked him up in New York for the rest of his career. People saying that it was a weird deal considering that DiPietro is average at best. Now, it seems like the Islanders really may be rethinking the move.

DiPietro is scheduled to have season-ending hip surgery for the second year in a row. Last year, it was the left hip. This year, the right. That makes the first two seasons of his whopping contract shortened due to injury. The important point that the recent ESPN article left out is that the contract is guaranteed and if DiPietro has to retire because of an injury, he will be paid in full. If he retires for any other reason, the remaining money left on the contract will be forfeited. At this point, it looks like DiPietro is an injury basket case and may cost the Islanders a lot of money if his career is short lived.

A Hockey Player Really Just Signed A $124 Million Extension?

Going through all the news I missed while gone on my trip to Las Vegas, I could not help but look twice at a few headline that reads, Ovechkin, Capitals signs 13-year, $124 million contract extension. The first thing that popped into my non-hockey head was the story I ran on Rick Dipietro who signed a 15-year, $67.5 million deal with the New York Islanders in September of 2006. Back then, fans of the sport were screaming bloody murder. A poll showed that only 7.1% thought it was a good deal for the Islanders. I wonder if people will think differently about the recent move by the Capitals after its $124 million deal with Ovechkin, making him the first NHL player to have a 9 figure contract (Dipietro still holds the record for longest term of an NHL contract).

Whether you like the deal or not, Ovechkin is happy with the terms of the agreement, and he negotiated the whole contract all by himself. Not bad considering that he is only 22 years old and hails from Moscow, Russia. Ovechkin may have received a contract to his liking, but perhaps he should look into acquiring an agent for other purposes such as endorsements, public relations, etc. At least Alexander does not have to deal with a situation like the agent-less Daunte Culpepper went through.

Danny Laruso's Gonna Fight?

After the Isles got the good news about Ricky DiPietro, so did the Sharks and Jonathan Cheechoo. Reminds me of O.C. from "Miracle," where Herb Brooks is tryin' to decide whether to play him in the Olympics. We need Miyagi to do that thing where he makes the pain go away so that the Isles and Sharks can sweep the leg with no mercy.
