Mets trolling the garbage heap, interested in Joel Piñeiro.

Jon Heyman is tweeting that the Mets are interested in Piniero if his price tag falls below the $30 million mark over 3 years. The 31 year old right hander had a career year for the Cardinals this year. He was 15-12 and had an e.r.a of 3.49 over the span of 214 innings. His strongest point, only 27 walks all year. The problem is, he has been well below average for too many years leading up to this. I view him as a right handed version of Oliver Perez. He was built up so much as a young Mariner and never materialized. I guarantee you his 2010 stat line looks nothing line his 2009 stat line. I pray that the Mets do not spend money on this guy. Why not explore Jon Garland, Randy Wolf, or even Jason Marquis. All three are better than Pineiro. I would even be a fan of signing Brad Penny on the cheap and bringing his surly attitude to New York. He has electric, sinking stuff and is not afraid of anything.

This all may be posturing by Minaya as to who he really covets. Also, we can hope that the Cardinals want to retain Pineiro and sign him so all this is worthless.

Ollie is determined...

Last year I would be more skeptical then I am this season, thanks to Luis Castillo. Yes, I was one of those who wanted Castillo gone no matter what and didn't believe he could make a comeback that would convince me otherwise. Castillo did prove me wrong and even though he could be moved this off-season, I would have no problem with him returning. After signing a three year 36M contract Oliver Perez had the worst year of his career. He only made 14 starts ( 65 innings ) with a record 3-4 wi...

Oliver Perez May Be Worst Signing Of 2009

Ben Nicholson-Smith of MLBTR looked at some of the least successful signings of the off season last year. And there’s a good chance that Oliver Perez was the worst of them all. Here are the other candidates.
Oliver Perez – $36MM over three years – He allowed 51 runs in 66 innings for an ugly 6.82 [...]

Hypothetically Speaking: Would You Trade Oliver Perez for Gary Matthews Jr.?

Hypothetically speaking, let's say that the Mets have decided that they cannot take another year of Oliver Perez and his inconsistent performance. They'd like to get out from underneath Perez's contract, even though they just signed him to a extension last season. And maybe, just maybe, the Mets might have a taker for Perez. The Angels are also looking to unload an overpriced and under performing player by the name of Gary Matthews Jr. Matthews has failed to live up the expectation...

Mets inside the numbers

Oliver Perez is the latest Mets pitcher to go down. Jason McCallum of ESPN Research compiled numbers bearing out the crazy injury situation the Mets have had this year: They've lost 18 All-Star appearances to the DL, in addition to 1,066 HR, 4,091 RBIs and a combined 2009 salary of $94.8 million, which is greater than the Opening Day payroll of 18 teams.

So maybe Oliver Perez really has an injured knee and wasn't just using it as an excuse for his struggles this season. It seemed like every time Perez would have a bad outing, suddenly his knee was acting up, but Perez has been shut down and will have season ending surgery. The Mets are going to try and call this season a wash because of the knee, but that doesn't exonerate them from a hideous contract, that's going to hinder them this off-season. "I would say his knee issue pr...

Perez latest Met to be sidelined for season

The New York Mets have lost their third pitcher for the season in two days, an alarming rate even by their standards.

Left-hander Oliver Perez will require season-ending surgery to repair patella tendon tendinosis in his right knee, the team said after he was examined Wednesday in New York.

The injury ends a dismal season for Perez, who is expected to fully recover and be ready for spring training.

Ollie tweaks his knee

I have to say, in my opinion Oliver Perez is hands down the worst signing of Omar Minaya's reign. What makes things worse is that everything Perez has exhibited this year, could have been predicted prior to his signing and for this team it's exactly what they didn't need.Behind Johan Santana the Mets have too many variables, what they needed to sign was a consistent pitcher, not a pitcher known for being inconsistent. Ollie belongs on a team with a solid 1-2 punch rotation and a 5...

Oliver Perez is quickly becoming the new Luis Castillo. Last year, Mets fans and journalists routinely ridiculed Mets GM, Omar Minaya, for giving Castillo a lucrative four year deal that was worth $25 million.
This season Minaya is drawing similar criticism for the three year, $36 million deal that he gave to Perez. It’s hard to [...]

I really don't want to hear about untapped potential and flashes of brilliance, anyone who has watched this team for the last three years knew at some point Oliver Perez was going to be inconsistent. What we didn't realize was how bad he would be and for how long.I venture to say that Perez is Omar Minaya's worst signing, with Luis Castillo you could at least rationalize a long term track record of outstanding success and even in Sept. of 2007 he was excellent in NY.With Ollie wha...

News: Oliver Perez slated to start Wednesday

New York Mets left-hander Oliver Perez took another step toward returning from a right knee injury, allowing three runs in five-plus innings Friday night in a Triple-A rehabilitation start.

Perez Perez gave up five hits and four walks while striking out four for the Buffalo Bisons. He threw 92 pitches, 46 for strikes, and delivered a first-pitch strike to only seven of the 23 Rochester Red Wings he faced.

Perez has said reaching 100 pitches in a rehab start was all he needed to ...

Great News, Mets Fans! Oliver Perez is Going to the Bullpen!

WRONG. SO WRONG. According to Mets Blog, Jerry Manuel and crew have decided to move Ollie to the bullpen. If words on a computer screen could literally convey human emotion, these particular missives would be dripping with incredulousness (is that even a word? whatever, I don't care).

So, let's review for a moment here. We're taking a pitcher who is a certifiable headcase at this point in his career...a lefty who loses all semblance of any sort of control at the blink of an eye...a hurler who right now is devoid of any self-confidence and as "fragile" as a professional pitcher of some level of accomplishment can be...one who's walked 21 and yielded 28 hits in 21.2 innings...who boasts a 9.97 ERA...and putting him in the bullpen?

Sure, this makes total sense. Put a pitcher with zero command who lacks any mental toughness and place them in what could be argued is a more pressure-packed environment (relief pitching) that he's completely unfamiliar with and just see how it goes? I can't wait to see Manuel stride to the mound and tap his left arm for Ollie with a few runners on and a lefty at the plate to help get us out of a jam.
