Jon Heyman is tweeting that the Mets are interested in Piniero if his price tag falls below the $30 million mark over 3 years. The 31 year old right hander had a career year for the Cardinals this year. He was 15-12 and had an e.r.a of 3.49 over the span of 214 innings. His strongest point, only 27 walks all year. The problem is, he has been well below average for too many years leading up to this. I view him as a right handed version of Oliver Perez. He was built up so much as a young Mariner and never materialized. I guarantee you his 2010 stat line looks nothing line his 2009 stat line. I pray that the Mets do not spend money on this guy. Why not explore Jon Garland, Randy Wolf, or even Jason Marquis. All three are better than Pineiro. I would even be a fan of signing Brad Penny on the cheap and bringing his surly attitude to New York. He has electric, sinking stuff and is not afraid of anything.

This all may be posturing by Minaya as to who he really covets. Also, we can hope that the Cardinals want to retain Pineiro and sign him so all this is worthless.

Last year I would be more skeptical then I am this season, thanks to Luis Castillo. Oliver Perez pitched in a rehab game for AAA Buffalo and he was his inconsistent self. On the Heels of Oliver Perez's successful rehab outing, it's been announced that Ollie will make a start on Friday in Buffalo and if everything goes well, he could return to the team after that start.Ollie threw 73 pitches, through five shut out innings on two hits and one walk while striking out six. Perez threw 41 pitches for strikes and it appears he's as ready as he'll ever be to return. It will be interesting to see how Perez's used, will he replace someone in the rot...

Rest assured Mets fans, we no longer have to endure Oliver Perez starting games for our club - at least in the short-term.

Good news, right? WRONG. SO WRONG. According to Mets Blog, Jerry Manuel and crew have decided to move Ollie to the bullpen. If words on a computer screen could literally convey human emotion, these particular missives would be dripping with incredulousness (is that even a word? whatever, I don't care).

So, let's review for a moment here. We're taking a pitcher who is a certifiable headcase at this point in his career...a lefty who loses all semblance of any sort of control at the blink of an eye...a hurler who right now is devoid of any self-confidence and as "fragile" as a professional pitcher of some level of accomplishment can be...one who's walked 21 and yielded 28 hits in 21.2 innings...who boasts a 9.97 ERA...and putting him in the bullpen?

Sure, this makes total sense. Put a pitcher with zero command who lacks any mental toughness and place them in what could be argued is a more pressure-packed environment (relief pitching) that he's completely unfamiliar with and just see how it goes? I can't wait to see Manuel stride to the mound and tap his left arm for Ollie with a few runners on and a lefty at the plate to help get us out of a jam. This should be all sorts of fun...
