DC Caps Report, Fedorov on Defense?

You have probably caught the news on Sergei Fedorov practicing on the blue line with the Caps, we mentioned it yesterday in our Caps report. Listening to NHL Home Ice this morning on my way to work, those guys made the inference that maybe the Capitals defense is not as strong as they anticipated. That's crap.

Around the Capitals Rink (5/6) - A Look at Capital Free Agents

Washington has work to do with its own free agents. Deals that need to be worked out …

D Mike Green appears to be the top priority after a stand out season in which he led the NHL defenceman in goals. Green also clicked with counterpart Shaone Morrisonn to form a pretty potent defensive duo. Green appears set to be the Capitals front office top priority concern and will likely be addressed first.

Flyers Lose Game 5 To Capitals, Lose Knuble To Hamstring Injury

The season was on the line for the Washington Capitals on Saturday, and they came out like it. They played with a no-holds barred energy and knocked the Flyers back on their heals.

During the second period, Mike Knuble, who was the hero of game 4, went down to block a shot and injured his hamstring in the process. He will miss the rest of this series.

Game 6 is Monday back in Philadelphia.

Capitals win, send series back to Philly

The Capitals played their most complete game at just the right time, staving off elimination by beating the Flyers 3-2 in Game Five. The win pushes the series to a Game Six that will be played back in Philadelphia on Monday.

The Flyers need to finish this series off at home on Monday. This Capitals team has proven that if you give them a small opening, they will storm right through it. Allowing the Caps to win Game Six and then letting them go home to Washington again would be killer for the Flyers. Expect the Flyers to come out with a ton of energy on Monday, and it will be the Capitals turn to weather the storm.

I still stand by my prediction before the series of the Flyers in six.

Ovechkin's Caps looking to some Damage

Philly fans beware. Alexander Ovechkin and the red hot Washington Capitals have everything going for them headed into the first game of the series. Everyone is in awe of Ovechkin but it's his surrounding cast that got them over the hump and into a division title. Now I'm not saying that Ovechkin doesn't deserve the Hart, cause he will get it, or that Washington would be a decent team without him. I'm just saying that this is hockey and as good as one player is he needs a team around him to win. Take a look at Gretzky's career post Oilers, 0 Cups. The Caps have made what seems like all the right moves at the trade deadline bringing in goaltender Cristobal Huet, who has gone 11-2 in a Capital uniform, veteran center Sergei Federov, and Matt Cooke to go along with the home grown (sort of) talent in Ovechkin, rookie of the year hopeful Nicklas Backstrom and hard nosed defensemen Mike Green.

Flyers - Capitals First Round Series Analysis

This is going to be a fun series to watch, and that is not just because of the Ovechkin factor. Both of these teams are young, fast and physical.

By finishing in last place last year, the Flyers missed the playoffs for the first time in 11 years. In the offseason, GM Paul Holmgren made some aggressive moves to rebuild the team.

For the Capitals, nobody expected them to make the playoffs this year. In fact, they lost 15 out of their first 21 games.

Steve Yzerman dipping his pen in company ink?

Though the Wings are one of the best teams in the league and are on the doorstep of another 100 point season, two very strange things have occurred in the last couple of weeks.

1)The re-signing of Darren McCarty

2)Not trading for Sergei Federov

And both those things have the stamp of one person.

AccuScore: Will Hossa Bring the Penguins a Cup?

The trade deadline means different things to fans of different teams. If you're a fan of Atlanta or Tampa Bay, you're dealing with the loss of one of your star players. If you're a fan of Detroit or New Jersey then your playoff-bound team made a deal, but it was just a minor one. If you're a fan of Montreal, then you spent the whole day Tuesday hitting refresh on message boards and trade sites, waiting for Marian Hossa to arrive, only to see him go to the Penguins at the last second. And if you're a fan of the Penguins, Stars, or Capitals, then your team made a huge move and you must be elated. AccuScore's Tim Williams reviews the top moves, and how these moves affect the teams that made them.
