The Office of the Commissioner of Baseball announced today that Tampa Bay Rays Minor League player Matthew Walker has received a 50-game suspension for testing positive for an amphetamine, a performance-enhancing substance, in violation of the Minor League Drug Prevention and Treatment Program.The suspension of Walker will be effective immediately. Walker is currently with Single-A Vero Beach of the Florida State League.Since mandatory drug testing was instituted, a total of 182 suspensions have been doled out across baseball for a total of 5,725 games. You have got to be kidding me - baseball has a three time offender of the drug policy! I figured you would have to have bad luck to be caught twice and just plain dumb to have it happen three times. Apparently, that does not apply to Neifi Perez. According to the AP, Tiger infielder Neifi Perez was suspended for 80 games Friday after testing positive for a third time for a banned stimulant, which essentially would have him out for this season and possibly into 2008.

In a story every bit as surprising as Alex Sanchez doing steroids or Marcus Giles being heterosexual, word just broke that Ne!fi Perez has been suspended for testing positive for stimulants. From the AP story: "The Office of the Commissioner of Baseball announced on Friday that infielder Neifi Perez of the Detroit Tigers has been suspended 25 games, effective immediately, for testing positive for a banned Stimulant in violation of Major League Baseball's Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program." So that's how he got the exclamation point in his name. Drugs. You see what drugs get you, kids? A .172 batting average, that's what. If you're looking for fantasy advice based on the news because Perez is your starting shortstop, congratulations: your name is Dusty Baker.
