Rooting Interests

I hate the Rockies. Hate them, hate them, hate them. I hate that they couldn’t win a single game against the Braves in 1993. I hate that they went 7-13 against the Diamondbacks in 2001. I hate that Neifi Perez existed, and I hate that he hit a home run in what used to be the worst park in the history of baseball to prevent the Giants from winning the 1998 Wild Card outright. I hate that when the Giants needed help in 2004, the Rockies lost every game against the Astros.
And I hate ...

For the Rockies, a meaningful, late-season series in Denver is about as rare as a Neifi Perez home run. Come to think of it, a Neifi Perez home run is all you need to know about what the Mile High City can do to a visiting team's wild-card hopes. It was...

Fukudome could be out the door this winter

Lou's post-game comments last night on Fukudome:

"From now on, I don't want to hear about Fukudome anymore as far as whether he's going to play or not," Piniella said when a reporter asked him about Fukudome's slump. "I'm going to play [Mike] Fontenot or Reed Johnson or somebody else, and that's the end of that story. The kid is struggling, and there's no sense sending him out there anymore."

I'm all for this and have been for a long ...

The Idiot File: Tiger Infielder, Neifi Perez

You have got to be kidding me - baseball has a three time offender of the drug policy!

I figured you would have to have bad luck to be caught twice and just plain dumb to have it happen three times.

Apparently, that does not apply to Neifi Perez.

According to the AP, Tiger infielder Neifi Perez was suspended for 80 games Friday after testing positive for a third time for a banned stimulant, which essentially would have him out for this season and possibly into 2008.

Oh, Neifi! Perez suspended for stimulant use

In a story every bit as surprising as Alex Sanchez doing steroids or Marcus Giles being heterosexual, word just broke that Ne!fi Perez has been suspended for testing positive for stimulants. From the AP story:

"The Office of the Commissioner of Baseball announced on Friday that infielder Neifi Perez of the Detroit Tigers has been suspended 25 games, effective immediately, for testing positive for a banned Stimulant in violation of Major League Baseball's Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program."

So that's how he got the exclamation point in his name. Drugs.

You see what drugs get you, kids? A .172 batting average, that's what.

If you're looking for fantasy advice based on the news because Perez is your starting shortstop, congratulations: your name is Dusty Baker.

If there's such a thing as someone feeling lonely when tens of thousands of people are screaming on your every move, then I suppose it would have to be a pitcher working on a no-hitter.

Even when the TV announcers refuse to acknowledge the feat, as FSN's Mario Impemba and Rod Allen did last night, describing Justin Verlander's no-no at CoPa. Not once did the words "no-hitter" escape either man's lips. Instead, they let the crowd -- and strategically placed shots o...
