Two dirty hits by Habs injure two Flyers

The Montreal Canadiens have been playing a more physical game all year under their new head coach Michel Therrien, but they took it to a new extreme against the Philadelphia Flyers on Monday night. It started with Canadiens forward Ryan White throwing what the referees deemed to be an elbow (replay shows that it was a shoulder) right to the jaw of Flyers defenseman Kent Huskins. Huskins went down immediately and looked to be in a lot of pain while his teammate Kurtis Foster jumped White and started to throw punches. Foster earned a double-minor for instigating a fight with a visor, a five-minute major for fighting and a ten-minute misconduct. White received five-minutes for fighting, a five-minute major for elbowing and a match penalty. Huskins did not return to the game and the match penalty means that a suspension will be coming for White. Despite it not actually being an elbow that hit Huskins, it was still clearly a headshot. Then later on in the game at 18:30 of the second...

As A Depth Move, Kurtis Foster Signing a Logical Move For Philadelphia Flyers

By Charlie O’Connor (@THG_Charlie)
After a 113-day lockout, it took Philadelphia Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren less than twelve hours to make his first transaction of the 2013 NHL season.
But the ever-aggressive Holmgren did not make a glamour free agent signing or pull the trigger on a season-altering trade. Instead, Holmgren’s first move was to sign 31-year old journeyman defenseman Kurtis Foster to a one year, $950,000 contract.
Foster becomes the new addition to a glut of candidates immediately capable of filling the role as sixth defenseman, including new addition Bruno Gervais and veteran Andreas Lilja.
Still, considering his relatively low-risk contract, nature of the shortened 2013 season, and unique skill set, Foster could provide solid value for the Flyers over the next few months.
New York Times sportswriter Chris Botta tweeted on Saturday that the Flyers considered giving Foster a two-year contract. Fortunately for Philadelphia, the actual term lasts through the c...

REPORT: Flyers To Sign Kurtis Foster

In the wake of the lockout ending and the thrill of an accelerated training campo beginning tomorrow (yes, tomorrow), the Flyers management are already at it. According to serveral sources including TSN's Bob McKenzie, that the Flyers have signed 31 year old defenseman Kurtis Foster.
Foster, a right handed shot, brings a great shot on a third pairing or a power play unit. Looking at the small pool of free agent defenseman, this was a valuable option for the Flyers. The former Minnesota Wild d-man, Foster brings depth to the Flyers defensive situation. Last season while only playing in 51 games, Foster recorded 4 goals and 10 assists. Foster is 6'5, 226lbs.
Flyers training camp is set to begin tomorrow (Sunday) at 10:00am at Voorhees Skate Zone...and yes it is open to the public.

New Wild players adjusting to new system

THURSDAY'S STORY LINE: Adjusting to a new system -- that's what the four Minnesota Wild players acquired in the past week are trying to do.

"It is always tough to learn a new system," said defenseman Kurtis Foster.

Foster and the other players will rely on practice time and video to get them up to speed on the new system.

Tom Gilbert, acquired from Edmonton on Monday, said the systems are very different. Gilbert said every day you learn and pick up on new things. He had his first full practice with the team yesterday and he also has been looking at lots of video.

"They have been showing me video every day and that is a good thing to do just to learn something. They showed me clips of how they do breakouts, how they do neutral zone stuff, the more you see it the easier it becomes," added Gilbert. "The worst thing you can do is think about it every time you are on the ice.
Foster, Gilbert expected to boost Wild's offense

TUESDAY'S STORY LINE: The ability to shoot the puck from the blue line -- it is something Minnesota Wild coach Mike Yeo has wanted all season.

The Wild defensemen have accumulated 74 points, last in the NHL. They have tallied only 11 goals, also last.

But Sunday against San Jose, the Wild shot the puck from the blue line and the results showed up on the scoreboard.

Minnesota defensemen took eight shots, and three resulted in goals. One went straight in; the other two were tipped in by forwards. That included Jed Ortmeyer's game-winner; Ortmeyer re-directed a Jared Sprugeon shot from the blue line into the net.

When the Wild acquired defenseman Kurtis Foster on Friday, they knew they were getting: a player with a booming shot who isn't afraid to use it.

Ironically, Foster, who has 70 shots in 38 games this season, didn't have one shot on goal Sunday. Still, after the game Yeo joked Foster may have inspired the other defensemen to shoot.

Three new faces in Wild's Sunday lineup

SUNDAY'S STORY LINES: There were new and old faces on the ice at the Xcel Energy Center this morning.

Friday, the Wild unloaded unhappy defenseman Marek Zidlicky to New Jersey. In return Minnesota received 30-year-old defenseman Kurtis Foster, 30-year-old forward Stephane Veilleux and 22-year-old forward Nick Palmieri.

All three will be in the lineup tonight vs. San Jose and they are looking forward to new opportunities.

For Foster and Veilleux, Minnesota is a familiar place. Veilleux, Minnesota's 3rd round pick in 2001, played 361 games for the Wild from 2002-2009. Foster played 181 games with the Wild from 2005 to 2009.

Minnesota is Foster's third team this season. He started the season with Anaheim and was traded to New Jersey on December 12th. The defenseman is happy to be back in Minnesota.

"It is a pretty good feeling. You never like to be traded, but when you come to a team like this that you know all the guys, you know the city and know how great the fans are it definitely makes

Foster - Australian for beer, or maybe just goal

After being benched by Head Coach Pete DeBoer a game before against Montreal, Kurtis Foster came out to play against the Philadelphia Flyers with a chip on his shoulder. He responded the only way that anyone could think of when trying to come up with a solution on how to impress their coach: produce. Foster netted a pair of power-play goals, one in the first and one in the second. Alexei Ponikarovsky would eventually be credited with the game winning goal in the Devils 6-4 defeat of the Flyers.

Kurtis Foster scored a pair of power-play goals, and the New Jersey Devils held on for a 6-4 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday afternoon.

Ilya Kovalchuk, Dainius Zubrus, Zach Parise and Alexei Ponikarovsky also had goals for the Devils, who have won three in a row. New Jersey's special teams scored three times on the power play and once short-handed.

Down 6-0 to start the third period, the Flyers stormed back to make it close. Wayne Simmonds, Jaromir Jagr, Claude Giroux and Jake Voracek had Philadelphia's goals.

The Flyers were 14 for 14 on the penalty kill against the Devils in the first three meetings this season. The road team has won each of the four games between the teams.
