Meteorite Damages KHL Arena

And the comments about karma can start here...

The meteor that passed 17,000 miles from the planet caused a lot of damage in Russia- over a thousand injured and a lot of buildings got taken out of commission...

There's a lot of cool dashcam video out there like this one from the Chelyabinsk region in the Ural mountains...

But what it did was knock out part of the Traktor arena...

Here's the statement from the league:

The meteor shower which struck Chelyabinsk and its environs has also caused some disruption to the hockey season schedule. The emergency services have confirmed that the walls of the Arena Traktor were among those structures to suffer damage, and therefore large-scale events at the stadium have been postponed. The sporting facilities will undergo an inspection by experts to assess the readiness of the arena to return to full operational use.

The results of the assessment will be made public on Monday, after which it will become clear whether ...

The KHL All Star Game will be played on January 13th in Chelyabinsk. Today the league announced the winners of the fan balloting for the game starters. Locked out NHL players won a significant number of the roles.

Starters in the West Conference are goalie Semyon Varlamov of Lokomotiv Yaroslavl and the NHL's Colorado Avalanche, defencemen Zdeno Chara of Lev Praha (Prague) and the NHL's Boston Bruins and Alexander Ryazantsev of Cherepovets Severstal (who has never played an NHL game but holds the record for the fastest slapshot ever recorded) and forwards Pavel Datsyuk of CSKA Moscow and the NHL's Detroit Red Wings, Alexander Ovechkin of Dynamo Moscow and the NHL's Washington Capitals and Ilya Kovalchuk of SKA St Petersburg and the NHL's New Jersey Devils. Starters in the East Conference are goaltender Michael Garnett of hometown Traktor Chelyabinsk, a former Atlanta Thrasher who has been in Russia since 2008, defencemen Sergei Gonchar of Metallurg Magnitogo...

Russia, Switzerland attract top NHL players

As the NHL labor talks stagger forward, fans must be wondering where the best hockey is being played elsewhere in the world. The Kontinental Hockey League has grabbed the most talent, but Switzerland, the Czech Republic, Finland, Sweden and Germany have also gobbled up lots of players. For the sake of these rankings, I split the massive KHL into its two division. We also included the first and second-tier leagues for the other European countries. Most of the players listed below have some NHL experience. Some, like Ilya Kovalchuk, are established NHL stars who are locked out.
Other players are former NHLers playing out the string overseas. The listings do not include many world-class players who never made it big in North America.I would love to see how these teams would stack up in a tournament format:1) KHL WEST Forwards: Ilya Kovalchuk, Alexander Ovechkin, Alexander Radulov, Joe Pavelski, Evander Kane, Artem Anisimov, Pavel Datsyuk, Ruslan Fedotenko, Mikhail Grabovski, Alexi Poni...

NHL lockout is happening whether the fans like it or not

It's nice to be loved, isn't it? All of a sudden, hockey fans are the center of PR messages from the league and spiffy videos from the NHLPA (featuring David Backes!) explaining why people won't be going to any pre-season games this month, or NHL hockey games in general for quite some time. I feel loved now, don't you? I mean, these guys are fighting for their paychecks, and they're still thinking of us.

How about the NHL? Pretty video for the fans? No. But we do get this spiffy press release from NHL.com:
Despite the expiration of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, the National Hockey League has been, and remains, committed to negotiating around the clock to reach a new CBA that is fair to the Players and to the 30 NHL teams.
Thanks to the conditions fostered by seven seasons under the previous CBA, competitive balance has created arguably the most meaningful regular season in pro sports; a different team has won the Stanle...

KHL game highlighted by goalie fight

The Kontinental Hockey League is one of the most hardcore hockey leagues in the world, and on Sunday they again proved why. During a game in the KHL rivals Traktor Chelyabink and Vityaz Chekhov not surprisingly got into numerous fights, and one of the larger scrums featured the two goalies facing off.
Both team’s goalkeepers, Traktor’s Michael Garnett and Vityaz’s Matt Dalton fought it out in one of the best fights I have been witness to in a hockey match. The refs seemed like they shared the same view and decided to let it continue even after the two goalies ended up on the ice.
Traktor went on to win the black and blue affair by a score of 5-1.

Video: Goalies brawl as KHL goon squad Vityaz strikes again

The reign of tyranny continues for KHL goon squad Vityaz Chekhov.
Already this year, there were the brawls with Metallurg. There was the line brawl with Riga. There was Jeremy Yablonski elbowing Darcy Verot in the head during a fight. There was coach Andrei Nazarov attacking fans with a stick. Hell, go back to the summer, and the Vityaz boys were fighting wedding guests.
Their latest bit of whimsy comes at the expense of Traktor Chelyabinsk, in a KHL game on Saturday. From KHL.ru:
Traktor Chelyabinsk's win over struggling Vityaz was little surprise - but the characteristically aggressive tactics of Vityaz resulted in a brawl in the last minute which saw even the two goaltenders - Traktor's Michael Garnett and the hosts' Matt Dalton - drawn into the melee. Traktor won 5-1, with four goals in the final period. Anton Glinkin got two of them; Anton Burdasov had 1+2.
"Characteristically aggressive" is being kind. Coming up, more from the Violent World of Vityaz C...
