Frustrations and Celebrations

Time for a quick fluff piece while we wait for the winter meetings. The Dodgers have had substantial success over the last two seasons but that success was mitigated by failure to advance past the NLCS. Normally we at TBLA are a positive group but this November I'm feeling disgruntled about our future. So for every irritation I have with the team I'll try to counter with a positive.

Mets talking to Dodgers, Luis Castillo, Juan Pierre?

MLBTR, among other sites, is reporting that the Mets and Dodgers have discussed Luis Castillo. Thoughts are that Juan Pierre may be involved in these talks on the Dodger side. If so, MetsCitiBlog say, "Please God NO!" Unless the Dodgers...

Blogging the Offseason: Los Angeles Dodgers

Blogging the Offseason is a 30 team series in which I ask a blogging representative from each MLB team a series of ten questions about their desires and thoughts surrounding the offseason. Check out all of them here.Today's NL team is the Los Angeles Dodgers and our guest is MSTI from the Dodgers Blog, Mike Scioscia's Tragic Illness.1. In all likelihood Manny is going to pick up his player option, if it was a mutual option do you think the Dodgers would pick it up or do you think they...

Should the Dodgers Trade Juan Pierre?

Now that Manny Ramirez is officially back with the Dodgers, it looks as though the Dodgers will look to trade Juan Pierre. Take it away, Dylan Hernandez:"With Ramirez back, the Dodgers can resume searching for a team to which they could deal outfielder Juan Pierre, who has two years and $18.5 million left on his contract. Colletti and his top assistants will head to Chicago for the general managers meetings, which start Monday."Everyone seems to be clamoring at the idea to trade Pie...

Let's Play "Guess The Torre Quote Subject"

As per Dylan Hernandez in today's LAT (no link--that would ruin the game!), Joe Torre said the following yesterday about a particular Dodger:

"...[He's] in line with everyone else. He's swinging hard. He knows why he's in the lineup. He knows we can count on him. He tries to be that guy. Sometimes he gets a little too big."

About whom is Torre talking?

Just to make things easier, I'll boil this down to bullet points:

a) In line with everyone else.
b) Swings h...

Juan Pierre Still a Bit Salty

From "Juan Pierre finally gets his due" by Kevin Baxter at the LA Times:

Then came last Thursday, when Pierre heard something he'd heard only rarely in his 2 1/2 seasons as a Dodger.

It was the sound of cheering. A standing ovation, in fact.

"I heard it," Pierre said. "But I didn't realize they were standing up. For the fans to do that, it means a lot.

"I wasn't expecting it at all. I was surprised. And shocked." [...]

Do The Math: Juan Pierre

Let's break down Juan Pierre 0.318 avg during Manny's 50-game suspension:

So basically after his 20-game torrid start, he's hit 55 points below his career average. Here's a graph of his cumulative average during those 50 games, and since I'm not a big fan of arbitrary splits or cumulative averages, I've also included his trailing 10 game average*:

Juan Pierre and the Price of Readiness

Does this qualify as irony? Juan Pierre's famed work ethic has just cost him a starting job. By demonstrating his ability to produce with little or no warning, Pierre has made himself into the ultimate bench player.

Now that we've got that out of the way, time for the important stuff: When will Manny hit his first post-suspension home run? Participate in our new poll on the sidebar.
