Another Blow to Amateur Basketball in the US

Just this past week as this year's inductees were announced for the Basketball Hall of Fame, most of us coaches eagerly waited for Bobby Hurley Sr.'s name to come up only to be disappointed yet again. To be sure, Michael Jordan, David Robinson, Jerry Sloan, John Stockton, and C. Vivian Stringer are each deserving of the honor. But one has to wonder if Coach Hurley will ever get his shot, and what kind of message this sends about amateur basketball.

Most coaches know who Coach Hurley is -- the long-time head coach of the St. Anthony Friars of Jersey City with 950-plus wins, 24 state championships and a career 90% winning percentage, the subject of a New York Times Bestselling book "Miracle of St. Anthony," and father of famous Duke player Bobby Hurley Jr. Steve Politi of the New Jersey Star-Ledger has the story. His argument is that the Hall of Fame is biased against high school. Of the 81 coaches inducted, only two high school coaches have ever made it, Morgan Wooten and Bertha Teague.

At a time when the game of basketball is facing a crisis of legitimacy at the grassroots level in the United States, it seems extremely short-sighted to have once again overlooked what Coach Hurley, and the thousands of high school coaches and teachers have contributed and continue to contribute to the game.

In his Final Four press conference Roy Williams said, "Bob Hurley is a Hall of Famer -- period. It's going to happen. It's just a matter of when." I certainly hope so. Enjoy the Easter Weekend y'all...

First off – the Basketball Hall of Fame class of 2009 was announced today. Headliners are Michael Jordan, John Stockton and David Robinson. And I’m thinking – why did they even bother to vote on those three?
How MJ, Stock and The Admiral changed my life | WILDCARD SESSION

As the three NBA icons Michael Jordan, John Stockton and David Robinson prepare to be inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame, I couldn't be happier. I'm not exaggerating when I say that these three living legends changed my life. It really hits home to see all three make Springfield together, and here I share my experience :1. Michael Jordan : When I first started playing basketball in 1993, Michael Jordan was already the greatest of all time. I'm aware of Jordan's shortcom...

Michael Jordan leads the 2009 class of inductees into the Naismith Hall of Fame. David Robinson, John Stockton, Jerry Sloan and Vivian Stringer were also selected to the Hall earlier today. It was inevitable that MJ would enter into the Hall on the first ballot. His career was unparalleled by any others. Besides averaging the highest ppg in league history 30.12, Jordan was a 14-time All Star, 5-time MVP, 6-time Final MVP, 3-time All Star MVP, 1988 Defensive Player of the year along with coun...

Jordan, Stockton and Admiral in Hall of Fame??? Man, I Feel Old!!!

Michael Jordan, David Robinson and John Stockton were elected into the Basketball Hall of Fame. I think I'm ready to go through my mid-life crisis. Sports help measure your life. When you are a kid, athletes are gods and heroes. When you are in high school, lot of these guys are just a few years older than you. As a young adult, these guys are your age. Around 30, most of the guys you remember their rookie seasons are now retiring. Now in my mid-30s, those guys are getting into Halls of F...

The Rise of the New Era or The Fall of a Degeneration?

For over 15 years, the 'big man' has dominated the NBA Championships and is regarded to as the one and only catalyst that any elite team lacks for that final push in the NBA Finals. For the past 15 years, four dominant big men from four different teams have led their team to the NBA's most coveted prize, namely: Shaquille O'Neal, Tim Duncan, David Robinson, and Hakeem Olajuwon; and if not for a generation overload named 'Michael Jordan', we would also have names such as: Charles Barkley, Shawn Kemp, and Karl Malone. It truly is a spectacle, and a blatant post to the forehead that dominant big men spell championships; which may play as the largest factor when deciding over the top pick in this year's up-coming NBA Draft. But little by little, slowly but surely, is the game evolving? Can the 'big man' still be considered as the priceless asset for any championship team? History says yes, but tiny speckles of history also whisper that it may not be the case sooner than everyone may expect.

Legends

Bill Russell, Bill Walton, David Robinson, Patrick Ewing, Bob Lanier, Ive seen tapes of all these guys before my freshman year of high school. The tapes were to help me see how these guys played mostly offensively. It was crazy watching how good they were and that they did it against the best in the world. Instead of tapes, how about I get schooled by all of them. They sit us all in the same room and let me ask questions and they let me in on anything they think I should know. Well that happened Wednesday morning, it was one of the greatest things to happen to me. I learned so much. It's amazing to even think about what things they let me into as a big man going into my rookie year. I didn't think I was even suppose to be in the same room with those guys. I'm not even drafted yet and someone decided to put me in a room with them. I am really blessed. They video taped it so it was just for a show but I learned so much. It was like a class that I was very much interested in. I was quiet most of the time, and when I did talk they told me to speak up. They said that when all of them came into the league there were soft spoken but as you get older, your mouth gets bigger. They even joke around with each other a lot. So it was fun and informative. I heard some Bill Russell stories that made me go dang, I didn't know you did all that. The one point he really got across to me is no matter what I do have fun. As much as I love my fans, what I learned from them was you have to draw lines. Bill Russell said to me that someone once told him that's the price you pay for being an athlete and what he said to me was "who decided that". He also said that they are looking at me to be grown-up and professional because I'm so tall. No one really looks at me as a 19 year old kid, and no one has for a while now. He gave me so much knowledge. All of those guys are really great teachers and I learned so much. I'm so thankful to everyone involved and for making it happen. I'm not going to give out the secret to being a big man in the NBA, but I'm just letting anyone who reads this know that there is one and I know it ;-}.
