NHL Missing a Big Opportunity

Wednesday night marked the third night in the past week we had to decide whether to focus our attention on the NBA Eastern Conference Finals or watch the NHL's rising superstar take on one of the league's greatest franchises in the Stanley Cup Finals. Not only were these two crucial playoff series taking place on the same day, they were unfolding at the same time.

Wings get some Luck

The Red Wings have had some luck in their first round series against Nashville. In the opening minute of the second period of Saturday's game, Nicklas Lidstrom scored Detroit's 2nd goal but it could have easily been called back because Tomas Holmstrom interfered with Nashville goalie Dan Ellis. Then the Wings scored the winning goal when Kris Draper bounced the puck off a Predator skate past Ellis a few minutes later in the second period. Even if the Wings get passed the Pred's, which looks very likely, I think they will have a hard time against any other team in the West. They are just too banged up, too old, and aren't as strong as their President's trophy would suggest.

Ottawa Still Alive; Pronger Couldn'tve Been Wronger

Duck Chris Pronger is suspended for Game 4, a second series in a row. Last time he took out Detroit's Tomas Holmstrom and this time it was Ottawa's Dean McAmmond. Last time, Anaheim lost Game 3 and this time they gave Ottawa a win to keep the series 2-1. Pronger's elbow seemed to crack McAmmond's head enough to knock him unconscious, but the final score gave the Sens a glimmer of hope that maybe they won't be swept. The Ducks won Game 4 against Detroit. What'll happen on Monday?

Flames will see joy in six

Ha! All the experts and odds makers say the Red Wings will win in 5 or 6 games. This is the only guy going against the grain. I'm also going to route for the underdogs as well.

The key players to watch in the series are: Henrik Zetterberg - he's the most dominant player on Detroit and even Calgary! He has shown in the past that he can win a game all by himself! Tomas Holmstrom - he's always willing to paying the price to tip shots and screen the goalies. Nicklas Lidstrom and Matthieu Schneider - this pairing can play a game of keep away like nobody's even there. Then there's the Dominator. Those Flames will sure have a handful. If Detroit can go up by two games in the series, the series is over. If the Flames can go up by two, then I like their chances.

Another article in the Detroit press says: Don Cherry said it is imperative the Wings score early and often. "They've got to get right off to a score like 3-0, or something like that," Cherry said. "The longer they go 0-0, the better it is for Calgary. They'll get more confidence and more confidence. The (Wings have) got to go in there and blow them out right off the bat."

The keys for Calgary are: stay out of the penalty box. Collapse defensively in front of the net whenever Detroit has the puck. Forget trying to pressure the Detroit defense pairing of Lidstrom and Schneider. They are too good at the game of keep away. Also, the line of Iginla will have to be dominant every shift. The guy I see reprising the role of Gelinas (the Eliminator) is Amonte. He is hard working, and he is a former goal scorer turned checker, just like Gelinas was.
