Mets Setting Their Eyes on Joel Pineiro

Citi Field Savior: “The Mets, in search of an innings-eater to stabilize their rotation, are particularly intrigued by free-agent righthander Joel Pineiro, according to a team insider.” Classic Mets here. Intrigued by a starting pitcher who’s last winning record before this past season was in 2003. But he’s durable! So are Toyota Corollas and trash [...]

Pineiro intrigues Mets...

According to Adam Rubin at the Daily News the Mets are intrigued by Joel Pineiro. This is the second time this short off-season that Pineiro has been mentioned. It all depends on who you talk to in regards to him, some believe he always had the talent and just became confident in his skills, while others believe he's a product of Dave Duncan. In St. Louis, Pineiro has been a ground ball machine that will need a strong defense behind him, meaning the right side of the infield needs some w...

Free Agent Joel Pineiro

Joel Pineiro is a guy who got a lot of press this season because of his drastic shift from an ok pitch-to-contact, slight ground ball pitcher to an amazing tiny BB rate, extreme ground ball pitcher. As a free agent it is incumbent on teams examine the roots of this change as they evaluate [...]

Mets interested in Joel Pineiro

Already beginning the PR machine the Mets have begun to discard the top tier of free agents as being too expensive and are beginning to focus their efforts on the next level of free agents. One of the first things to come out of the GM meetings was that were already finding excuses to not be interested in Matt Holliday, Jason Bay and John Lackey. The excuse with Lackey was his history of injuries and according to Jon Heyman they are now looking at guys like Joel Pineiro. Pineiro is the type of...

St. Louis Cardinals starting pitcher Joel Pineiro sits alone in the dugout during the fifth inning and considers whether he would rather move to New York, Cleveland, or Milwaukee, after being pulled out of Game 3 of the National League division baseball series against the Los Angeles Dodgers Saturday, Oct. 10, 2009, in St. Louis. "As long the money's good, I can go anywhere. Not Detroit, thou...

It ended as it began

Well, it was a good ride while it lasted – a much better season than most of us expected. We didn’t deserve to win the series. We were outpitched, outhit, and outfielded; the Dodgers were clearly the better team over the 3 game series. First of all, I wanted to deal w/ the elephant in the room – the strike zone. I’m sure there was some discussion of it last night, as there certainly was from the Cards’ dugout and, occasionally, the Cards’ batters box. The graph below shows the strikezone ...

Valuing Joel Pineiro

What kind of contract will Joel Pineiro get on the open market? The great Jon Heyman took a stab at that very question yesterday with this prediction:"Pineiro, two years, $15 million."This prediction is interesting to me because it's far lower than my prediction for Pineiro a week back of 4 years/$40 million. Either I really like Pineiro or Heyman really dislikes Pineiro. Or maybe the market just sucks. But nevertheless, here's my reasoning for the 4 years/$40 million predict...

Free Agent at the End of the Season: Joel Pineiro

It's a good time to be Joel Pineiro. After muddling around in the land of mediocrity for the past five years, Pineiro's 2009 season has been a revelation. Seemingly out of nowhere, Pineiro has catapulted himself from an average starting pitcher to the productive and sometimes dominant starter that so many envisioned him becoming when he began his career in Seattle. And Pineiro's timing could not have been better. He will be a free agent after the season and has put himself in a pri...

Santana's strikeout rate is still low, for him, but his last start was his first game over a strikeout an inning since May, when the nosedive began. He's a good enough pitcher that he's still great striking out six per nine, but since every Met making more than the league minimum this season is living under the constant fear of tearing a rotator cuff opening a door or something Mets fans are justifiably conce...

Bill James Influence Evident in Joel Piniero Signing

I don't know how accurate this article is, but it presents reasoning I hadn't heard yet as to why the Red Sox acquired Joel Piniero to act as the team's closer.

Stats guru and Red Sox senior advisor for baseball operations Bill James has very various theories on what it takes be a major league closer. As you'll read, Joel Piniero exhibits those qualities.

Then again, Bill James also "put forward a theory that the team could get by with a four-headed closer by committee -- with disasterous results."

Only time will tell. He'll deserve a lot of the credit or the blame.
