Pacific Division 2008 Free Agency Preview

A look into the free agency futures of the teams in the NHL's Pacific Division. What will July have in store for the Anaheim Ducks, Dallas Stars, Los Angeles Kings, Phoenix Coyotes, and San Jose Sharks? Will the Coyotes and Kings be big spenders? Will Anaheim be able to fill out their roster while staying under the salary cap? Will Brian Campbell stay by the Bay?

Hossa Trade Analysis

Ray Shero and the Pittsburgh Penguins certainly surprised many of us with the last minute deal today, especially given the pre-trade day belief that the Penguins were not looking for a blockbuster deal. It would be hard to refute that snatching Marian Hossa, one of the league's top wingers, to play alongside one of the league's most talented centers is anything but a blockbuster deal. The Penguins also got left winger Pascal Dupuis in the deal that sent Colby Armstrong, Erik Christensen, Angelo Esposito and a 1st round draft pick to Atlanta. But will it be a good trade? Have the Penguins given up too much for what some consider to be a short-term rental in Hossa? In June will it be viewed as a great trade, or a bust?

Rangers Deal Montoya, Li'l Hossa

I'm not sure if there were still any fans out there that believed Montoya was considered a blue-chip prospect - especially after the former first-round pick lost his job in Hartford this season to the unheralded Miika Wiikman. Nevertheless, this is a blow to a franchise that, at the very least, expected to be able to spin the highly-touted Montoya for a valuable asset in the wake of Henrik Lundqvist's emergence as a premier NHL netminder.

VonBudel helps Rangers halt skids, beat Devils 2-0

Nigel Dawes, yes, Nigel Dawes broke the Rangers' scoreless losing streak. Dawes scored two goals last night against the Devils and Lundqvist stopped all 22 shots he faced. The Rangers hadn't won in 5 games, hadn't scored a goal in 126 minutes and hadn't tallied an even strength goal in 182 minutes. I'd like to attribute this change of fortune to myself, as the Dawes scored his first goal as soon as I stepped out of the escalator tower and onto the concourse. Rangers fans, ...

Center Stage on Broadway

Do you believe in magic? Well Rangers fans probably do after their team somehow managed to fit the salaries of two of the biggest free-agents under cap-constraints.

What will concern the Rangers the rest of the summer is going to be how they can fit the rest of their restricted free agents and Shanahan under the cap. The Rangers gave Chris Drury a five-year $35.25 million deal and Scott Gomez a seven-year $51.5 million deal. That puts the team payroll at $38 million already under a salary cap that cannot exceed $50.3 million next season. This leaves them with about $12 million to spend on Henrik Lundqvist, Shanahan, Petr Prucha, Sean Avery, and Marcel Hossa.

Marcel Hossa & Sean Avery = Rangers win 5-0?

Rangers won big, 5-0 over the Lightning, in their first game with Avery acclimated to the team. Team has an easy schedule for the next few games so it makes for a nice time for them to pull themselves back into the race. The team certainly has the talent, they were leading the Atlantic before the Devils hit their stride. The Rangers aren't a cup contender, but don't be surprised if they sneak into the playoffs.

Oh. And Colton Orr scored his first career goal. Colton Orr.
