Philadelphia Phillies - Burrell's Out, Who's In?

Davey Lopes awkwardly and inadvertently gave us a glimpse into the future plans of the Philadelphia Phillies and their outfield. Apparently, Pat Burrell isn't in those plans. The direction they seem to be heading, which I fully endorse, is to get a quality center-fielder in the offseason, shift Shane Victorino back to right, and move Jayson Werth to left field. Lopes said as much in his fortuitous statement to Tom McCarthy during his in game interview. The problem, however, is that there are few options at center field through free agency this offseason. Here's the list…

DENVER, CO &#8212; Colorado Rockies general manager Dan O&#8217;Dowd has reportedly told outfielder Willy Taveras that he may be traded soon, with the most likely destination being an unaffiliated minor league club, the Washington Nationals.
&#8220;It&#8217;s always been a dream of mine to play for big league clubs, and I have that with the Rockies,&#8221; a [...]<img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/SSNN/~4/374537908" height="1" width="1"/>

Longoria, Hart Win Fan Vote on MLB.com. Record Set

Tampa Bay Rays rookie third baseman Evan Longoria and Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Corey Hart were chosen by fans as the winners of the Monster 2008 All-Star Game Final Vote in record-shattering voting exclusively on MLB.com (http://mlb.com/), the official website of Major League Baseball. Baseball fans supported the 10 candidates named by All-Star managers Terry Francona and Clint Hurdle in unprecedented fashion by casting a record 47.8 million votes since the program commenced on Sunday, July 6 at 3:00 p.m. (EDT). This year&rsquo;s record number of votes represents an increase of 107 percent from the previous mark of 23.1 million set in 2007. Since its inception in 2002, the Monster All-Star Game Final Vote has now recorded nearly 130 million votes. The American League winner, Longoria, received the highest total number of votes ever and led all vote-getters with nine million en route to becoming the second consecutive rookie to win the balloting, following Boston&rsquo;s Hideki Okajima last year. He was followed by Jermaine Dye of the Chicago White Sox; Jason Giambi of the New York Yankees; Brian Roberts of the Baltimore Orioles; and Jose Guillen of the Kansas City Royals. On the National League ballot, Hart became the second Milwaukee player to win the Monster All-Star Game Final Vote by holding off a late charge from David Wright of the New York Mets to claim the final spot on the National League All-Star roster with a final tally of eight million votes. Hart and Wright were followed by Pat Burrell of the Philadelphia Phillies; Aaron Rowand of the San Francisco Giants; and Carlos Lee of the Houston Astros. Previous winners of the Monster All-Star Game Final Vote include: Okajima (AL, 2007); Chris Young (NL, 2007); A.J. Pierzynski (AL, 2006); Nomar Garciaparra (NL, 2006); Scott Podsednik (AL, 2005); Roy Oswalt (NL, 2005); Hideki Matsui (AL, 2004); Bobby Abreu (NL, 2004); Jason Varitek (AL, 2003); Geoff Jenkins (NL, 2003); Johnny Damon (AL, 2002); and Andruw Jones (NL, 2002).Source: MLB Advanced Media Maury Brown is the Founder and President of the Business of Sports Network (http://www.businessofsportsnetwork.com/), which includes The Biz of Baseball (http://www.bizofbasketball.com/), The Biz of Football (http://www.bizoffootball.com/), The Biz of Basketball (http://www.bizofbasketball.com/) and The Biz of Hockey (http://bizofhockey.com/).
Trivia Question: Who was the winning pitcher in the first game at Miller Park? (Answer below)
If you answer correctly, Adam Charles will buy you a hamburger.
That on top of the 4 tacos for $1 Joe Koshansky won for you with his 430-foot 8th inning blast.
Not a bad deal, ay?

AccuScore: The Need for Speed

Guys like Carl Crawford are taken in the high rounds because of their ability to steal bases and hit for a high average. Guys like Joey Gathright are sitting on the waiver wire because, despite their stolen bases, their average is much lower. AccuScore fantasy expert Tim Williams takes a look at the difference between Gathright and Crawford to your fantasy team, and discovers that Crawford's average doesn't justify his high price tag.

White Sox Storm Out of the Gate

While the 2008 season is still a newborn baby that was just recently introduced to the world, the Chicago White Sox have risen to their early challenges. The South Side Hitmen are currently tied for first place in the ever-tough American League Central heading into their home opener against the Minnesota Twins.

I understand it is still April and an entire summer's worth of America's pasttime is upon us, but these guys look driven. I hate to sound like a Cubs fan, but this could be a very exciting year on the southside. There are still a fair share of question marks, including a hit-or-miss a rotation and a platoon in left field, but from what I've seen in the first six games of this young campaign -- I'm ecstatic..

Rudy Seanez to the Dodgers: The Fantasy Impact

Seanez is one of those journey-men relievers who has certainly had more good seasons than bad, yet can never seem to find a permanent stay anywhere. I remember having him on my team back in 2005 when he was on the Padres. In 60 IP, Rudy posted a 2.70 ERA, 1.18 WHIP, and a 12.6 K/9 IP. And that was at age 37. Granted, the following season, he posted a 4.92 ERA, 1.70 WHIP, and a 9.2 K/9 IP, but he bounced back in 2007 with the Dodgers by posting a 3.79 ERA, 1.38 WHIP, and an 8.6 K/9 IP. Considering the market for, well, just about anyone who has at some point thrown a baseball near home plate, I'm surprised Seanez couldn't garner a better one year deal somewhere.

We'll also examine Juan Gonzalez's minor league contract with the Cardinals and Scott Podsednik heading to Denver.

Who is the Hottest Wife/Girlfriend in Sports?

The first match of round three is in the books, and it wasn't even close. Our #16 seed, Elisha Cuthbert, hockey player Sean Avery's babe, pounded our #14 seed Bec Cartwright, Lleyton Hewitt's doll, into submission.

The next two beauties to face-off in round three are our #6 seed, Scott Pods' wife Lisa Dergan, versus our #17 seed, wife of Bucs QB Jeff Garcia, Carmella DeCesare. Who moves on to round three? That, my friend, is up to you!

Who is the Hottest Wife/Girlfriend in Sports?

And we have yet another upset! The second round is going just the opposite of the first round where most of favorites won. In our latest duel, Cristiano Ronaldo's honey, (21) Gemma Atkinson, corner-kicked our #7 seed, wife of Michael Andretti, Jodi Ann Paterson to the curb.

The next two ladies to go one-on-one will be our #6 seed Lisa Dergan, wife of White Sox outfielder Scott Podsednik, versus our #23 seed Aleka Kamila, wife of NBA baller Peja Stojakovic. Who moves on to round three? That, my friend, is up to you!

Scott Podsednik Not Rushing to Make Opening Day Lineup

Podsy, returning from off-season hernia surgery, says "he's not going to rush back just to play on opening day." More importantly, don't expect him to be at full base stealing strength even when he does return. He's always been a first half player, so this latest setback further increases the chances that he won't be nearly as productive on the basepaths in 2007 as he has been in years past.
