The 10 biggest NHL stories of the last decade

(No, the first decade of the 21st century doesn't technically end until 2011. Save your bellyaching. But we've had nine NHL seasons and one stolen from us since 1999-2000, and Yahoo! Sports has decided it's time to rank the best and worst of the last "decade." Enjoy, and snark freely in the comments.)Moments of unjustifiable criminal behavior. Economic despair. Debilitating physical ailments that irrevocably changed the lives of many. Man, was this a great decade for the...

Video: Jaromir Jagr's Top 10 Goals As a Member of the Pittsburgh Penguins

by Adam GretzFiled under: Penguins, NHL Fans, NHL VideosJuly 11 marks the anniversary of when the Pittsburgh Penguins traded Jaromir Jagr to the Washington Capitals for the woefully underwhelming (and somewhat embarrassing) return of Kris Beech, Michal Sivek and Ross Lupaschuk. Pensburgh, taking a look back at the trade, referred to the deal as a "lose-lose for both sides." Statistically speaking, however, it was, and still is, the worst trade involving a Pittsburgh sports team.Foll...

Thoughts On a Failed Season | Part II

I hope some of you enjoyed Part I of my season-in-review which I posted yesterday. Today I'm back to take a look at what the future might hold for some current Blueshirts. Some of this analysis concerns what I think the Rangers will do, and some concerns what I would do. At the end of the day, they're just this fan's thoughts and predictions.

I'll just post my thoughts on the big fish, Jaromir Jagr, since my critiques of the captain have ruffled some feathers in the past. For the rest of the players I take a look at, check out the full article.
--------------------

It's sad, and probably petty of me, but the biggest thing I'll take away from Jaromir's time in New York is the fact that the franchise's single-season goal mark no longer belongs to Adam Graves and, as an unapologetic nostalgist, that bothers me. I'll leave the final thoughts on Jaromir to MSG's Joe Micheletti, who evidently knows a thing or two when he's off the Cablevision-controlled network and speaking instead on WFAN radio. Said Micheletti:
QUOTE
"Here's what I would look at: The last six weeks that he played, say, the last 2 or 3 weeks of the regular season and the playoffs, he was one of the best players in the game. And he's 36. I mean, every game he was a factor. But the previous 70 games, he only played like that for five games. Right now the Rangers are paying about 4.5 or 5 million of his salary, and he's getting another 4.5 or so from Washington, so this is a player who made 9-10 million dollars this year. Are you gonna sign him to a long term contract not knowing what you're going to get out of the regular season and hope that he plays in the playoffs? Personally, myself, I would not.
And there are some philosophical differences as well, guys, and we talked about the powerplay. He's a very stubborn guy. He wants to play the powerplay a certain way. It didn't work, but he wouldn't change the way he wanted to play."

Harsh words, but I couldn't have said it better myself. Verdict: Gone, off to Siberia.

Jagr turning back the clock

So it seems to me that Jaromir Jagr was reading what I wrote about him a couple of days ago because last night he got off the Rangers off to a great start. He scored 2 powerplay goals in the first period and lead the Rangers to a 3-0 win over the Islanders. With the win they clich?d a playoff spot and kept the possibility of playing at home in the first round. This is a key because they have played much better at home this season even though Jagr has had his struggles scoring at home.

Playoffs? Playoffs? Jagr To Speak To Russian GM Next Week

Today in the Daily News, John Dellapina informs us that Jagr is open to meeting with Bardin at some point next week.

Frankly, it's absurd, and no one in the dressing room or the front office can be too pleased about it.

According to Dellapina, Jagr has hinted in recent weeks that he believes the Rangers are unlikely to resign him. If true, this Garden parishioner couldn't be more thrilled. Lord knows the team could use the cap space.

Russian GM Seeks Jagr | Rangers Seek Cherepanov

The always informative and indispensable Blueshirt Bulletin have a great "scoop" today, alerting fans to a report out of Russia that Avangard Omsk general manager Anatoly Bardin is coming to New York with the "main obective" of opening negotiations with Rangers captain Jaromir Jagr.

If you recall, Jagr played for Omsk during the NHL lockout, and vowed to return to the Russian League one day.

Another item on Bardin's agenda will almost certainly be to jump-start negotiations with the Rangers concerning Avangard forward Alexei Cherepanov, who fell to the Rangers in last year's draft amid concerns about signability due to the 19-year-old's obligation to Avangard Omsk. Evidently those concerns have proved to be legitimate, as reports indicate that talks have stalled between the two clubs.

Jagr Driving Rangers To Distraction

Predictably the talk surrounding Jaromir Jagr and his contract situation hasn't gone away since the Rangers' captain spoke to the Post's Larry Brooks and expressed his desire to not be "a distraction to the team," while cryptically revealing that he has "a pretty good idea what [he's] going to do next year…but [he's] not going to say anything."

As we stated on Monday, Jaromir would have been better off keeping his mouth shut.

NHL Trade Deadline Preview - Atlantic Division - Part 3 of 6

The Atlantic Division has most of the biggest media markets in the National Hockey League, so if there is a trade, you can bet it will be dissected to no end, but who will be on the move? Is it possible that the Rangers would move Jaromir Jagr?

Burnside: Trade Jagr

Burnside believes that the Rangers need to do something more dramatic than tinkering at the trade deadline if they hope to turn their season around. GM Glen Sather should consider trading captain Jaromir Jagr, says Burnside, a move that could serve as addition by subtraction.
Burnside states, "It goes without saying that there would be a market for a player of Jagr's immense talent," which is interesting because it was only last season that Barry Melrose stated, "No one wants Jaromir Jagr." If Burnside is correct, and a team like Colorado, San Jose, or Vancouver would be interested in dealing for Jagr at the deadline, then the Rangers should listen hard. Adding a valuable asset in exchange for an expiring one is exactly the sort of move the team needs to pursue if it hopes to return to the Stanley Cup Finals in this new salary cap age.
