Coyotes Bite Sharks 5-3

The Phoenix Coyotes snap the road win streak for the San Jose Sharks and improve their record at home by beating the Sharks 5-3. Ed Jovanovski had a huge four-point night, and Shane Doan along with Peter Muller had a three-point night. Doan had two goals.

They won without Radim Vrbata who left due to a lower body injury during the game and Steven Reinprecht who left with neck spasms. Vrbata leads the team in goals scored with 18.

Ilya Bryzgalov shut the Sharks down in the third period when Joel Perrault scored the game winning goal in the opening seconds of the period.

The Coyotes have won four games in a row at home.

The Rock Crumbles...well not quite....

I am not sure where in the hell Wayne Gretzky got enough money to pay off the officials...but something stunk in this penalty filled affair. Yes, the Devils killed themselves with some of the penalties but Phoenix was just as guilty...including a head high hit by Jovanovski which did not go unpunished. Hat tip for Phoenix...especially to Martin Hanzal and company as the dumped the Devs 4-1 today...here is the livecap.

Coyotes Visit Blackhawks; Jovanovski Suspended

The Chicago Blackhawks have a legendary history befitting of an original six franchise. However, in recent years, that history has been tarnished with under performing teams, unhappy fans, and a clogged revenue stream. Not until Blackhawk's General Manager Dale Tallon took over, that light began to gleam a little brighter at the end of the tunnel.

Rookie phenoms Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane have been lighting the lamp for the Blackhawks and the Blackhawks have seen a renaissance lately. Fans have been coming back, and the team has begun to appear once again on television.

The Blackhawks have six players in double digits with points scored with Kane leading the group with 25. Robert Lang and Jason Williams follow behind second and third in points scored respectively.

Martin Havlat returned to the lineup once again and in each of his two games that he has played, he has scored two goals.

The Blackhawks are third in a newly powerful Central division where every team is above .500 and gunning for the division leading Detroit Red Wings. They are tied in points with the St. Louis Blues and have won six of their last ten games. The Blackhawks are also 7-5 at home.

Both teams are fast and the edge in rookie talent leans towards the Blackhawks. Plus, defenseman Ed Jovanovski will sit tonight's game due to a one-game suspension that the NHL levied against him for his hit against Marian Gaborik Wednesday night that occurred late in the game (with 17 seconds remaining).

Fredrik Sjostrom will be back in the lineup and goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov will get another start. Bryzgalov has won four of his last five and has a 1.58 GAA and a .942 save percentage while in a Coyotes sweater.

Coyotes Overthrow Kings 4-1

The Phoenix Coyotes won decisively against the Los Angeles Kings Wednesday night 4-1. Once again newly acquired Coyotes' goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov looked spectacular as he stopped 27 of 28 shots. They improve their home record to 3-7 and are now one game under the .500 mark.

Ed Jovanovski finally showed what a top flight defensemen he can be by generating four hits and three assists for a plus-3 rating on the night. His three assists contributed to three out of the four goals.

Bryzgalov continues to make a solid impression as he kept his team in the game early. The Coyotes did have turnover issues in the first period, but Bryzgalov helped them through it and the Coyotes had a better second and third periods.

Friday afternoon the Coyotes travel to Anaheim for a matinée against the Ducks. Quite possibly, Bryzgalov will be in net to face his former team. That should be very interesting...

Jovanovski Rumors Reappear

The Ed Jovanovski rumors reappear once again. One would have thought that those speculations would have been squashed after the summer because Jovanovski is still here.

However, with some, logic prevails as many realize that Jovanovski's contract is too much for some teams and that he has a no-trade clause in his contract.

Plus, he is paired with new acquisition Freddy Meyer on the blueline for Wedneday's game.

It is still curious to me though why these rumors persist.

Coyotes Lose to the Avalanche in OT

The Coyotes fired 45 pucks at the Avalanche goaltenders, Ed Jovanovksi scoring the tying goal with seconds to go in the third period, but the Avalanche scored in the overtime session. The Coyotes lose 4-3.

Shane Doan spoke about missed opportunities and thought that the Coyotes could come away with a win.

Martin Hanzal, Radim Vrbata, Mike York, Mike Zigomanis, and Steven Reinprecht all had assists. Derek Morris and Mathias Tjarnqvist scored the other goals for the Coyotes.

Inside the Coyotes, There are High Expectations

There have been two reports from publications that put the Phoenix Coyotes in the basement of the Western Conference. Include another columnist that opined that the Coyotes will be the worst team in the NHL, and you have a trifecta.

It would be somewhat understandable that with the focus on rebuilding, expectations within the hockey club are just to improve from the debacle last season. However, from the way the veterans talk, they are focused, better or worse, on a playoff spot.
