Ed Jovanovski out for remainder of season

SUNRISE, Fla. Florida Panthers defenseman Ed Jovanovski will miss the remainder of the season with a hip injury, the team announced Thursday.
Jovanovski will undergo surgery April 5. The injury is not career threatening, a Panthers spokesman said.
Named Panthers captain prior to the start of this season, Jovanovski was limited to just six games this season. He finished with one assist, a minus-4 rating and averaged 15:39 of ice time per game.
Jovanovski missed a stretch of 21 games due to what many believed was a knee injury suffered Jan. 31 against the Tampa Bay Lightning. On March 9 he revealed it was a different lower-body injury which had kept him out of the Cats lineup.
The 36-year-old defenseman returned on March 16 in Florida's 4-3 loss to the New York Islanders. He played a little more than 14 minutes over the first two periods, but did not skate in the third.
Jovanovski joins a lengthy list of Panthers who have suffered season-ending injuries. Florida previously lost top-line forwards Stephen Wei

Jovanovski will undergo surgery April 5. The injury is not career-threatening, a Panthers spokesman said.

'He had discussions with team doctors, trainers and all of us together," Panthers GM Dale Tallon said. "It's obviously Jovo's decision. He's the one who has to make the final call on that. He knows his body better than we do. I have confidence he will do whatever it takes to get back and play."

Dan Spiegel: Something Is Up With Jovanovski

Quick hit here, but rumors are swirling that veteran Ed Jovanovski is likely out for the year with what has been a long-term knee injury. But the bigger rumors are if this lingering problem may lead to his retirement as well.

Jovanovski, the first overall pick in franchise history for Florida back in 1994, has played in 1,167 NHL games with Florida, Vancouver, and Phoenix. The picture associ...

Panthers will wait as Jovanovski gets healthy

CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. Injuries continue to take their toll on the Florida Panthers.

Two days after Ed Jovanovski returned from a 21-game absence, coach Kevin Dineen announced Monday the Panthers captain is out indefinitely with a lower-body injury.

Jovanovski will remain in Florida during the team's eight-day, five-game road trip. Dineen indicated he will offer more clarity on the situation "after we give him a chance to get healthy, which is eight days, but it will be a longer stretch than that."

Jovanovski skated in Florida's 4-3 loss to the New York Islanders on Saturday. He played just under 11 minutes during the first two periods, but was not on the bench for the third.

Not until March 9 did Jovanovski reveal to the media the injury plaguing him was an ailment he entered the season with. The 36-year-old disputed previous reports suggesting it was a knee injury suffered during Florida's Jan. 31 contest against the Tampa Bay Lightning.

"He's had a recurring lower-body in

Panthers agree to deal with RW Alex Kovalev

The Florida Panthers and right-winger Alex Kovalev agreed to a one year deal, the team announced Friday.

The 18-year NHL veteran turns 40 next month and has scored 428 career goals to go with 596 career assists.

Alex is a veteran player with great skill and vision who we are pleased to have signed, Panthers general manager Dale Tallon said in a release. He is a talented forward with playmaking abilities, who has experienced success both at the National Hockey League level and in international competition. We look forward to his contributions to our club both on and off the ice.

The deal becomes official one day before the Panthers open up their season at home against the Carolina Hurricanes. The Panthers are looking to repeat as Southeast Division champs after grabbing that title for the first time last season.

The Panthers also announced that defenseman Ed Jovanovski, the No. 1 overall pick in the 1994 draft, would be the team's captain. Jovanovski played the first three and half years of his career

Dan Spiegel: New Team Captain: Stephen Weiss, Ed Jovanovski or Brian Campbell?

Assuming there is a season, it is about time Florida head coach Kevin Dineen named a team captain going forward. Last year the team ran with assistant captains that included Tomas Kopecky, Stephen Weiss, Brian Campbell, and Ed Jovanovski. Such a committee approach was just what the doctor ordered for a team that was looking for its first playoff berth in 12 years and a roster that was completely...

Jovanovski may miss up to two months

The Florida Panthers could be without Ed Jovanovski for two months after the veteran defenseman underwent surgery to fix a broken hand.

Jovanovski injured his hand in a first-period fight against the Boston Bruins on Monday.

Before playing the Colorado Avalanche on Wednesday, Panthers coach Kevin Dineen said he was ''really impressed'' with the 35-year-old Jovanovski's play this season. He has two goals and six assists in 43 games.

Jovanovski, in his second stint with the Panthers, was Florida's first-round pick in 1994. He played 3 1/2 seasons before being dealt to Vancouver, and spent five seasons with the Phoenix Coyotes.

The Panthers also pulled off a trade with the Carolina Hurricanes on Wednesday.

Florida sent forwards Evgenii Dadonov and A.J. Jenks to Carolina for forwards Jon Matsumoto and Mattias Lindstrom.

The 22-year-old Dadonov has spent most of this season with the Panthers' AHL affiliate in San Antonio, but has two goals and one assist in 15 games with Florida.
