McDonald's hockey cards will cause Senators fans indigestion

Outdated sports cards happen. Always have, always will. That's why traded sets became a cottage industry during the 1980s in baseball cards. The latest set of Upper Deck hockey cards available at McDonald's around Canada are no exception, as Saku Koivu(notes) is presented as a Montreal Canadiens captain and Dany Heatley(notes) of the San Jose Sharks is featured on three cards: Twice as an Ottawa Senators winger, once as one of the prides of Canada. Koivu is listed as an Anaheim Ducks ...

Wild miss on Saku Koivu, but land three defenseman instead; Development Camp Report

When it was announced yesterday that Saku Koivu signed a one-year deal with the Anaheim Ducks it was the first significant miss for new Wild General Manager Chuck Fletcher. The elder brother of the Wild's Mikko Koivu stated he did not wish to "take away" from what his brother had done with Minnesota by joining the State of Hockey. While Saku Koivu might be used to the doting, and constant attention from the ravenous Montreal media which comes with the job of wearing the captain&...

No Brother Act in Minnesota; Saku Koivu Chooses Anaheim

by Bruce CiskieFiled under: Canadiens, Ducks, Wild, Western, NHL Free AgencyEntering NHL free agency last week, there was a lot of chatter about the prospect of a Koivu family gathering in Minnesota. It is there that young Mikko has emerged as a face of the Minnesota Wild. His 34-year-old brother, Saku, became a free agent July 1, and it made sense that the two would play together with the Wild. In the end, however, Saku decided against the move, agreeing Wednesday to a one-year deal with Anah...

Koivu leaves Montreal for Ducks deal

Saku Koivu has left the Montreal Canadiens after 13 seasons to join the Anaheim Ducks.

The two-time All-Star center, who turns 35 in November, signed a one-year deal Wednesday.

Koivu was Montreal's captain for nearly 10 years, tying Jean Beliveau for longest-serving in the team's 100-year history. He had 191 goals, 450 assists and 623 penalty minutes with the Canadiens, the only team Koivu has played for during his NHL career.

Saku Koivu to the Wild?

I hope this isn't the big splash the Wild Ownership is talking about. I would expect them to land a big time free agent to replace their out going self centered forward Marian Gaborik. This move would be one of the needed pieces of the puzzle but I hope not the only big deal the Wild make.
It would appear C Saku Koivu's days with the Canadiens are finished. The Habs' captain will likely test the UFA market, although talk has resurfaced that he's going to pack his bags for Minnesota to play with brother Mikko. The Habs, meanwhile, are trying to sign D Mike Komisarek and RW Alexei Kovalev. Komisarek is expected to test the market, while Kovalev is expected to stay in Montreal ... The Stars' hiring of coach Marc Crawford has left hockey types mystified. Crawford coached Team Canada at the 1988 Olympics, when he selected the likes of Joe Nieuwendyk (now his boss in Dallas) ahead of Wayne Gretzky in the shootout during the semi-final loss to the Czech Republic. [CANOE]

Is Saku Koivu going to be a Wild?

One of the things we kept hearing this season was the speculation that Saku Koivu might want to be a member of the Minnesota Wild joining his brother Mikko. Sounds like he wants to remain a member of the Habs and do the Wild need another third line forward?
Koivu said if his vision of the future meshed with that of the team, he expected to have a deal, ideally for two of three seasons, before he becomes an unrestricted free agent on July 1. He added that if there’s no deal before the deadline, he will probably be playing elsewhere next season.

When Koivu was asked if joining his younger brother, Mikko, in Minnesota was an option, he said: “It would be amazing in one way to play with him on the same team. But on the other hand, he’s at the point where he has his own career. He’s making a name for himself and in some ways, it’s easier for him and I’d like to keep it that way. But it’s tempting to think about playing on the same NHL team with him and having some success.”
