The New England Patriots have added another weapon to their offensive arsenal, as they traded for Alex Smith. No, it’s wasn’t the San Francisco 49ers quarterback, it’s the other same named Smith that played tight-end for theTampa Bay Buccaneers. The Patriots sent a 2010 fifth round draft pick to the Bucs, in exchange for Smith who became expandable [...]

49ers make the right moves in firing Nolan and promoting Singletary

I just heard that the 49ers reportedly fired coach Mike Nolan and replaced him with defensive coordinator Mike Singletary. So let's get right to the gut reactions.

This was a good move, a necessary move by the 49ers. They should have fired Nolan after the disastrous 2007 season. Instead, John and Denise DeBartolo York let Nolan talk them into bringing him back. They stripped him of much of his front-office power and let him return as what could only be seen as a lame duck coach. For week...

Your long nightmare is over Niners fans?? or is it?

That's right, write down the date and time, the 49ers team management have finally made a smart move, and if I'm recalling correctly, ONLY smart move since Dr York took control of the once storied franchise by the bay. They've relieved Alex Smith, a top candidate for worst draft pick of all time, from his starting duties at QB. That's the end of the good move...

May I Introduce....

Our 2008 San Francisco 49er Starting Quarterback, J.T. O'Sullivan, yes that's right people you read this right I did type "starting qb". J.T. took the long way to get to the San Francisco Bay Area to end up trying to right a ship that, like the Titanic, hit a snag and pretty much went down.

What I find really very odd is that J.T. was born in Burbank, CA, went to college at California at Davis and has been through 6 teams before finally landing with the coach and system he knows well and is comfortable in right in the middle area of the state of California.

Through training camp and 3 preseason games he has consistently proved that he deserves to be the starter with our $50 million dollar baby as back up, how many of us wish we could hold a clipboard for that much money. Yes, I'm sure Nolan and the rest of the 49er organization knows they fucked up and fucked up badly but taking Smith as the #1 pick when it was clear to more then a few football gurus and fans alike that this was never going to work out and that Alex Smith wasn't the right fit for the San Francisco 49ers. Now I'm not by any means trying to say that J.T. will take us to the promise land or even that we'll sniff the play-offs but as of right now he seems to me at least to have enough command of the playbook to at least not look like a complete and utter moron out there. I'm curious to see him with the whole starting team around him and see where it takes us.

To be honest I was not looking forward to the start of our season because I didn't want to see Smith as our QB again looking like a deer caught in headlights, so J.T. at least gives me a couple more weeks of hope before the light is very bright or dims and fades again and we end up with the #1 pick in the draft next year.

We all know that Coach Nolan and Coach Martz are hoping that J.T. can help them out of a very big hole that Mike Nolan had dug for all the staff and the weight of the 49er organization is going to be put on a 6'2" 229 lbs. 28 year old quarterback who's been bounced around from the Saints to the Packers to the Vikings to the Patriots to the Panthers to now come back where his life started in sunny California.....Good luck J.T. you're going to need it!!!

2005 draft full of BUSTS!!

With Cedric Benson being dropped by the Bears this offseason and 2005 rookie of the year Cadillac Williams possibly out for the entire 2008 season it is hard not to look back at the top 10 picks of the 2005 NFL draft and not think about how TERRIBLE most of these guys have turned out. Gotta start with #1 pick Alex Smith of the San Francisco 49ers. Smith just got beat out of the starting job by a guy who has been on 8 different NFL rosters since being drafted in the 6th round of the 2002 NFL d...

If that's the case, how in the heck are Tim Rattay and Alex Smith on this list?!? I just gave you two answers, so see how much you know on your own by taking this quiz. Last names OK as responses.

49ers faithful should believe in Martz's QB call

Repeat after me, 49ers fans: In Martz We Trust.

You're going to need to believe in Mad Mike. You're going to need to have faith in the man and his offensive system as the 49ers approach the dawn of the J.T. O'Sullivan era in San Francisco. How strange does that sound, the J.T. O'Sullivan era? Odd, isn't it?

O'Sullivan started his second straight exhibition game Saturday night, a 34-6 victory over the Green Bay Packers. He's clearly the winner in the supposed thre...

The reason why the 49ers really hired Mike Martz and how it may backfire

There is more to the story of Mike Martz and his hiring to the San Francisco 49ers. The hiring may be because of Mike Nolan using him for job security. If Martz can develop Alex Smith into a great quarterback, then Nolan wouldn't have to worry about being a bust head coach. However, if Martz does succeed, maybe when Mike Nolan's contract is over, Martz may take over as head coach.

Mike Martz hired in San Fran, can now help shorten the career of Alex Smith

Just a few short days after being fired in Detroit, Martz is taking his show to San Francisco. That should make for interesting games with the Rams twice a year, and should shorten the career of both head coach Mike Nolan and QB Alex Smith although to be fair to Martz, Smith should put up some big numbers once he figures out Martz's offense.

Game Preview: Ravens at 49ers

Baltimore (2-2) @ San Francisco (2-2)
The Ravens fell behind 14-0 early in their game last week in Cleveland and while they never had to call on punter Sam Koch, they were unable to overcome the deficit, losing to the Browns, 27-13. Baltimore will be looking for their first road win of the season as they travel to San Francisco to take on the Forty-niners who lost their starting quarterback, Alex Smith (shoulder), last week and went down in defeat to the Seahawks, 23-3.
These two teams last met in 2003 where Baltimore dominated San Fran, 44-6. The Ravens are 1-1 lifetime and 0-1 against the 49ers in San Francisco.

Overview-
Baltimore is 6-1 following a loss dating back to the 2005 season and holds the second best record in the NFL since 2000 after a loss (30-14) - Denver holds the best record (28-12). They have outscored NFC teams 416 to 245 in the last 15 games played and have averaged 27.3 points per game in 17 contests against the NFC- the 3rd-best figure in the AFC.

Even so, while this offense has moved the ball well between the twenties- 4th most first downs (86) in the NFL- 53 of which have come passing -and is tied for the second most 3rd down conversions (29) in the league- they have stalled in the redzone.

The Ravens have had 14 possessions inside the opponent's 20-yard line this season and have converted just 35% of those possessions (five) into touchdowns. The normally stingy defense in the redzone has also faltered, allowing five touchdowns in nine attempts-55.9%- 25th worst in the league.
In essence, both sides of the ball, especially the offense, must to find a way to finish off drives with touchdowns in lieu of field goals.

San Fran has allowed teams to convert redzone opportunities into touchdowns 42% of the time (6 of 14). While their offense has had limited chances in the redzone, they have scored a touchdown in three of seven attempts or 42%.

Overacheivers vs. Underacheivers: Week 5

Here we are: Week 5! It's amazing how, once you get into the swing of things, how quickly football season starts to fly by. Last week the Over/Under picks were solid, maybe you listened, maybe you didn't. But, I won all of my games and remain in 1st place in 2 of my 3 leagues. How did you do? Last week's 7 for 11 (Alex Smith played 3 downs, it was hard to gauge which direction he was headed) showing lifted my season totals to 30 for 47, or 64% according to the Funston Scale O' Success (QBs > 15 points, RBs > 10 points, WRs > 7 points). So, get out your notepads, class is about to start.

Better Than Usual: QBs

Donovan McNabb - BYE - Because sitting on your ass is better than negative 9 points, right? Kidding... On to the real picks.

Drew Brees - NO vs. CAR - Okay, this is an ideal situation for a comeback. The Saints are coming off of a bye week at home to play a Panthers team who has looked downright repugnant the last two games. Their pass defense is in the bottom half of the league. If Brees can't pull it together this Sunday, write him off if you haven't already.
