Red Wings-Blackhawks Game 4 game-day updates: Wings understand gravity of their situation

As Paul's already noted, the Detroit Red Wings and Chicago Blackhawks exchanged the usual "all is well" sentiments as they prepared to face off in Game 4 of their second-round series tonight (8 PM EDT, NBCSN/CBC/97.1 FM, with a post-game show to air on FSD), and coach Babcock was in fine form during his game-day presser...

The NHL Network also filed a game-day report which includes comments from Babcock, Henrik Zetterberg, Niklas Kronwall and Justin Abdelkader... Continue reading "Red Wings-Blackhawks Game 4 game-day updates: Wings understand gravity of their situation"

Ericsson helps fill big holes on Wings' defense

DETROIT -- It seems like just yesterday when Jonathan Ericsson was the young defenseman arriving on the scene and making an impact for the Detroit Red Wings.

In the Wings' 2009 playoff run, Ericsson stunned everyone with his four goals and four assists in the 22 games, and by playing three days after an emergency appendectomy. He had played just 19 regular-season games.

Now 29, Ericsson is part of the Wings' top defensive pairing, along with fellow Swede Niklas Kronwall.

When Nick Lidstrom retired and Brad Stuart left to return to San Jose, it meant a bigger role for Ericsson.

"They always had a good D corps here, so it just took a while to get in," Ericsson said. "Thats how they develop all the players here, and I think theyve done a good job.

"When you get up here, most players are ready to stay up and not be up and down. You have to be patient. Everything doesnt come all at once. You just have to work your way in."

Wings Must Play Big And Match Chicago’s Effort Tonight

from Craig Custance of ESPN (paid subscription),

The best playoff teams have that element of size and strength in their top-six, and it's something Abdelkader provides for Detroit. Over the course of a long series, his physical style against the Blackhawks' best players can potentially chip away at their will and wear them down....

And Ericsson has settled in as a reliable partner with Niklas Kronwall, developing into a player Babcock can trust completely. With the Red Wings' season on the line in Game 7 against the Ducks, he played 26:10, the most ice time he has gotten in any game this year that didn't go into overtime.

"He's playing like a No. 2, that's a major progression for him," the NHL scout said. "He has size. He plays like a stopper and he can move the puck. He wants to do more with the puck, he thinks he can and he's getting there."...

If Detroit is a split second late, Chicago will blow right by them. It&#3...

Team Sweden captured the World Championship today, defeating Switzerland 5-2, and while Niklas Kronwall's definitely proud of his brother Staffan (who captained the team) having won the first Swedish gold on home ice since 2006, and Damien Brunner's probably paying some lost bets this evening...

One Wings prospect did take part in the Worlds, and he shared a gold-filled post-game dinner with lapsed Wings prospect Dick Axelsson: Continue reading "Red Wings prospect news: Jarnkrok wins gold with Sweden; Frk’s Mooseheads stumble at Memorial Cup"

Red Wings’ Ken Holland, Henrik Zetterberg weigh in on the art of Kronwalling

TSN posted quite the feature on Red Wings defenseman Niklas Kronwall's status as a cult hero and then some in Detroit, and perhaps as a villain in other cities, and HockeyWebCaster uploaded it to YouTube:

And yes, Kronwall insists that he's trying to keep things as clean as he can while leading the Wings' defense and trying to keep the physical edge to his game while playing anywhere between 22-27 minutes a night.

Wings put pedal to metal for full 60 minutes

All season long, Red Wings defenseman Niklas Kronwall has pleaded and prodded his teammates to play a full 60 minutes.

Saturday afternoon in Chicago, Kronwall finally got his wish.

In a dominating performance that ranks right up there in Detroit playoff lore, the Wings received contributions from each and every player and dispatched the Blackhawks rather easily, 4-1, to even up their second-round playoff series at a game apiece.

Stifling team defense combined with timely scoring paced a Detroit attack that was clicking from the opening face-off on.

Today was our best 60-minute effort of the playoffs, Red Wing goalie Jimmy Howard told FOX Sports Detroit after the game. We did a great job from the first period of really getting out of our zone efficiently and not turning the puck over like we did in game one.

That allowed us to be faster in the neutral zone and get in on top of their D.

It was a complete role reversal from Game 1, when Chicago completely outplayed the Wings, outshooting them 42-21. Sa

Niklas Kronwall levels Kyle Palmieri with center ice hit

About 13 minutes into the first period of game four of the Anaheim Ducks-Detroit Red Wings 1st round playoff series, Wings defenseman Niklas Kronwall was up to his old tricks. Kronwall caught Ducks forward Kyle Palmieri with his head down in the neutral zone and “Kronwalled” him. The hit was a 100% legal hit and no penalty was called. Kronwall does a great job of leading with his hip/back and never targeting the head; more players should learn to hit like he does.

Niklas Kronwall levels Kyle Palmieri

Niklas Kronwall sent a jolt through a rowdy Joe Louis Arena crowd with one of his trademark hits on the Anaheim Ducks’ Kyle Palmieri. About 13 minutes into the first period of the Detroit Red Wings’ 3-2 overtime victory, Kronwall stepped up and leveled Palmieri with a legal hit along the boards. No penalty was called — a welcome sight after Justin Abdelkader was given a five-minute major, game misconduct and later a two-game suspension for a high hit on Toni Lydman in Game 3. Kronwall’s hit was textbook … and 100-percent legal. (Apologies for the choppy video. We’ll get a better one in there when we can.) The Ducks’ Emerson Etem turned back to try to engage Kronwall in a fight following the hit, though nothing came of a little skirmish along the boards. The Red Wings’ fans then launched into a loud and lengthy “You Got Kronwalled” chant as play continued.

Detroit Red Wings defenseman Niklas Kronwall crushed Colorado Avalanche left winger Jamie McGinn with a monster body check in the final seconds of regulation during Friday night's Western Conference NHL battle in Denver.

McGinn was following the puck as it came around the boards into the neutral zone and didn't see Kronwall coming at him. Amazingly, McGinn was not hurt and played in overtime, with the Red Wings winning the game 3-2.

Red Wings’ Niklas Kronwall tells Craig Custance why the NHLPA accepted NHL’s realignment proposal

Very interesting stuff: Red Wings defenseman Niklas Kronwall spoke to ESPN's Craig Custance for an ESPN Insider blog entry, and the Red Wings' NHLPA player representative told Custance that the NHL provided the PA with multiple mock schedules which illustrated the travel teams would have to face, satisfying the players at least to the point that they chose to consent to the league's plan for two seasons:

"Compared to last year, they didn't have anything really mocked up. That was our concern. If [travel] is not going to get much worse, how much worse is it going to be? It was hard to make a call without seeing any numbers whatsoever," Kronwall said when we chatted following Detroit's win over Edmonton on Thursday night. "This time around we did get to see some numbers. It felt like the league wanted to work with the PA on a completely different level. It wasn't just, 'Here it is, take it or leave it."

Detroit Red Wings defenseman Niklas Kronwall scored a goal in Tuesday night's game against the Colorado Avalanche with an assist from the backboards at Joe Louis Arena.

Kronwall deliberately sent his slapshot from near the blue line just wide of the Avalanche net, but the puck bounced hard off the backboards towards the goal crease, then off the foot of Avalanche goalie Jean-Sebastien Giguere into the net for the score.

Kronwall's goal was the difference in the game as the Red Wings won 2-1.

Niklas Kronwall Delivers Brutal Hit to Kaspars Saulietis at IIHF World Championship (Video)

Niklas Kronwall doesn't limit the punishment he dishes out to NHL arenas. The Red Wings defenseman absolutely unleashed on Kaspars Saulietis at the IIHF World Championship in Sweden. Kronwall (playing for Sweden) crushed Saulietis (playing for Latvia) in open ice along the boards. Saulietis immediately went crashing to the ice on his back, drawing a big response from the hockey enthusiasts in attendance. The Stanley Cup playoffs have been far more punishing than usual this season, but few hits seen so far compare to this particular blow delivered by Kronwall. Check it out in the video below. A hat tip...

Kronwall delivers signature hit overseas

The playing surface might be larger at the IIHF World Championships, but it would appear that "Kronwalled" sounds the same in any language.

Getting "Kronwalled" also looks the same on any continent.

Niklas Kronwall, who is playing for Sweden in the world championships this year, has become known for his bone-crunching checks and tooth-displacing hits across the NHL while wearing a Red Wings uniform, and for good reason.

Take this clip from Sweden's first-round matchup against Latvia as poor Kaspars Saulietis gets absolutely "Kronwalled":

Even the announcer recognizes the newest verb in Detroit-er's vocabulary.

Luckily for the defenseman, this hit came over-seas; Brendan Shanahan has become particularly tough on "launching" checks during this years playoffs.

"Launching" occurs when the checking player leaves his feet prior to hitting his target, thus creating a "launching" effect.

Kronwall joined fellow Red Wings Henrik Zetterberg
