Beaver Insider: Wide Receiver Preview

As the Oregon State Beavers prepare for the 2009 opener against Portland State, many new starters look to shine and impress in the upcoming season. One of the main public perceptions is that the Beavs lack experience and talent at the receiving position.
Gone are Sammie Stroughter and Shane Morales. Gone are the 1,783 yards and 15 touchdowns compiled by the duo. Gone is the first team Pac-10 honor Stroughter received.
The only proven receiver on the Beavers is Junior...

The 2009 NFL Draft Preview: The NFC South

The teams in the NFC South were part of one of the toughest divisions in football in 2008 and all of them needed some help at various positions throughout their team. The Saints got some much needed help on defense as did the Panthers. The Buccaneers got their quarterback of the future while the Falcons worked some magic before the draft (by getting tight end Tony Gonzalez) then went and shored up some problems on defense.

The following is a look how each team in the NFC South drafted in the 2009 NFL Draft with draft grades for each team.

Atlanta Falcons-The Falcons made a trade for Gonzalez right before the draft making sure that they took care of their tight end position without having to worry about it in the draft. Taking defensive tackle Peria Jerry was big as was the acquisition of safety William Moore. Lawrence Sidbury Jr. might end up being the steal of their draft if he develops into the kind of player that they hope that he will. Grade B+

Carolina Panthers-The Panthers needed some holes filled in this draft, particularly on defense, and they managed to fill a few even though they didn’t have a single first round pick. Their first pick in the draft. Florida State defensive end Everette Brown should help them out immediately. Duke Robinson was their steal of the draft while they should get some good production out of the defensive backs that they selected. Grade B

New Orleans Saints-The Saints ended up with just four picks but they got the most out of those picks helping their defense, in particular their secondary, out immensely. With their first pick in the draft they got Ohio State cornerback Michael Jenkins a player that they needed desperately. They also grabbed safety Chip Vaughn in the fourth round to help themselves out at the safety position. While they didn’t have a ton of picks, they did manage to take care of some pressing issues. Grade: C

Tampa Bay Buccaneers-Tampa Bay managed to nab their quarterback of the future with Josh Freeman and this alone helped make their draft a decent one. Getting some youth on the defensive line is also a big plus so defensive tackle Roy Miller and defensive end Kyle Moore should help out a lot. Wide receiver Sammie Stroughter may be a real find for them as well. Grade: B

By Bryan Dietzler

Buccaneers Draft Rewind

Before I proceed with a little breakdown on the guys that we did draft I must make a few comments. When posting my final mock draft with my draft guru John Crimmins, I made one overall point to him about Saturdays’ first and second rounds: the only thing that would make me upset would be drafting Josh Freeman. Not only did we draft him, but we traded up to get him. It’s not that I don’t think the guy could be a good QB in this league, he seems to have a lot of the qualit...

The 10 Receivers You Want Your Team to Take on Day 2

There really is a lot of pass-catching talent in this years draft. I mean this sincerely. A team that thinks it has good receiver depth is missing out on something special this year. I will bring you ten talents, two for every round. And as a twist? No Ramses Barden on the list. Round 3 Mike Thomas-Arizona: While he is shorter than you would like, he does have a very tasty skill set. His timed speed is spectacular (4.30). And he uses it excellently in his return game. On short routes? Thomas ...

Mike Tyson once said that everyone has a plan until they get punched in the face.
After Sammie Stroughter’s junior season at OSU in which he caught 74 passes averaging 17.5 yards each, he had a plan to excel in his senior year and move on to the NFL.
College Football is Upon Us! Time for Homerism

Ahh, just minutes from kickoff of the 2008 College Football season. I can't remember a year I was more excited to watch me some pigskin. Of course, it probably has a lot to do with the fact my Oregon State Beavers are kicking off the national schedule with a trip to Palo Alto. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a bit nervous for the game, but I'm still optimistic they can pull one out on the road (despite the injuries). I'm getting goosebumps just thinking about it.I try to r...

So the first of the Senior showcase games is today on ESPN2 at 3pm in the East-West Shrine Game from Houston, Texas. While the game does have some exciting players, the real reason for the East-West contest is to raise funds for Shriners Hospitals for Children. Every year since 1925, this has been the case, and this year is not different. What do I know though, right? Let's have the oddest pairing of individuals ever explain it to you. Here's John Elway and Justin Timberlake! While I...

Thursday Matchup: USC Trojans v Oregon St Beavers

Today we feature the lovely co-ed matchup featuring the USC Trojans (-24.5) and the Oregon St Beavers. Quarterback Mark Sanchez has been putting up Heisman like stat completing almost 70 percent of his passes, for 510 yards, with seven TD's. With skill players on the outside like WRs Damian Williams (10 receptions, 140 yards, two TDs) and Patrick Turner (six receptions, 105 yards, one TD), as well as standout youngster Joe McKnight (9.2 yards per carry) in the backfield the Trojans are fa...
