Touch the Damn Trophy!

Alright, ladies and gentlemen. I'm going to make this one very short and sweet.

There's something that irks me about the National Hockey League Playoffs and it happened again Sunday in Pittsburgh at the Igloo and Monday in Dallas at the American Airlines Center.

I've never seen it happen in the other sports that give out trophies for winning their league (American or National in Baseball) or conference (AFC / NFC in Football, and I'm not sure whether or not they have trophies in Basketball).

The two teams that should be proud of their accomplishments are the Detroit Red Wings (Western Conference Champions, Winners of the Clarence S. Campbell Bowl) and Pittsburgh Penguins (Eastern Conference, Winners of the Prince of Wales Trophy), but they seem not to be because their "Captains" Nicklas Lidstrom and Sidney Crosby don't touch the damn trophies!

For all I know, they could still be at center ice of the arena names above.

Look, I know that there is "one more trophy" that's still left and it's the most special and difficult to win in all of professional sports, but still be proud of that trophy. Raise it high! There are 28 other teams in this league that would love to be in your position.

I've never heard football players and fans complain about, "Oh, we might have won the Lamar Hunt trophy but we won't win the Vince Lombardi trophy because our captain touched it!"

Or from baseball fans the same.

It all started back in 1999 when then-captain Michael Peca of the Buffalo Sabres didn't touch the Prince of Wales trophy in hopes of leading his team to the Stanley Cup, which didn't happen because of one of the most infamous goals (and yes, it was a goal) in Finals history when Brett Hull scored with a foot in the crease when players weren't allowed to have their foot in the crease at the time, except for when you have possession, which he did and that's why it was allowed.

Either way somebody's gonna win, and somebody's gonna lose. It doesn't matter whether you touch the trophy or not. Take those trophies home and show your fans your accomplishments.

Or else, I've got a great place on my mantle to put them.

Phaneuf will have his time

In just his third season in the NHL, Dion Phaneuf has put himself in some rare company. On Tuesday morning Phaneuf joined Nicklas Lidstrom and Zdeno Chara as finalists for the James Norris Memorial Trophy, which goes to the defensemen who demonstrates throughout the season the greatest all round ability in the position. With this definition there really is only one player to win this award this year and he has won it 5 times before, Lidstrom. With 70 points, a +40 rating, almost 27 minutes of ice time a game it's hard not to give it to him. But with that said Dion Phaneuf is on his way to owning this trophy like Bobby Orr did in the late 60's and early 70's. This season Phaneuf was first for defensemen for penalty minutes with 182, second in goals with 17 and fights with 10, fifth in average ice time and points with 60, and his 194 hits rank sixth. And it didn't stop in the post season as his 33 hits lead all other d-men. He is a mix of Scott Stevens and a little Bobby Orr. In a pole of 141 NHL players he was ranked number one as the hardest hitter in the league and he is the only defensemen I have seen that can take the puck into the offensive with relative ease, especially after he was paired up with Jim Vandermeer.

Media conference call with Nicklas Lidstrom

Earlier Nick was named as a finalist for the Norris Trophy, the NHL's outstanding defenseman. This is the ninth time in ten seasons he has been nominated. Five-time winner of the award, he helped the Red Wings post a defensive record this season allowing 2.16 goals per game. He also led all defensemen in scoring with 70 points on ten goals and 60 assists in 76 games and ranked second in the NHL with a plus/minus rating of plus 40.

Wings get some Luck

The Red Wings have had some luck in their first round series against Nashville. In the opening minute of the second period of Saturday's game, Nicklas Lidstrom scored Detroit's 2nd goal but it could have easily been called back because Tomas Holmstrom interfered with Nashville goalie Dan Ellis. Then the Wings scored the winning goal when Kris Draper bounced the puck off a Predator skate past Ellis a few minutes later in the second period. Even if the Wings get passed the Pred's, which looks very likely, I think they will have a hard time against any other team in the West. They are just too banged up, too old, and aren't as strong as their President's trophy would suggest.
