Skins honor their thug, Giants move on without theirs

Almost a year ago today I wrote: "As the sports world spends the day mourning the passing of Sean Taylor, my family and I spent the holiday weekend mourning the passing of a close relative, a WWII veteran and great man in our lives. While our idolization of sports stars and celebrities helps us ...

6th Man Alert

I know you all were tuned in the last couple nites you had 2 feel that energy. I mean we did so many things right, but the few things we did wrong are what we have 2 key in on. What yall think? All your comments gave me life I needed, sometimes I know the crowd is there, but I don't think they know how important they are. It would be cool 2 look in the crowd and see everyone with 6th man signs and shirts screaming and chantin lets go nuggets lets go. Hahaha I mean you guys r actually that important, we need you. It brings the best out of us. This applies 4 you other cities 2 not just denver. We don't need 2 fight but competition with sportsmanship is wonderful. I have learned a lot in my brief intro 2 this league and I love 2 hear what everyopne thinks cuz it makes the game what it is. I hope you enjoy your holidays cuz it is very important 2 cherish them, life is short may god bless Sean Taylor's family, Darrent Williams family and the many others who will be missing loves ones this xmas. Well enough talkin I'm bout 2 kick into gear got 2 get a one game win streak goin that's my motto, one game at a time.

Blessings

Christmas is getting closer and this is my first with my son, he's the best gift I got. This is a wonderful time 2 appreciate family and blessings, living is a gift. Just thinkin bout those athletes who r missing the gift of living Darrent Williams Sean Taylor. I'm focused on doing better 4 this season going farther, pushing harder at getting out of the first round. That's the gift I want and with all the nugget fans support it can be done. What u think? Once Nene returns and we find the chemistry as a whole group working as one, we will be tough 2 beat. What u think? I been getting in the gym 4 extra shots 2 get the jumpshot goin, but gettin 2 the basket and exciting the crowd with a dunk or 2 always establishes that so just stay tuned there's is plenty of season left and much more nuggets success 2 come.

Quinton Rampage Jackson makes a controversial remark

Quinton Rampage Jackson spoke about Sean Taylor's death:

"Shot in the leg and died. Where the hell was the ambulance? Flavor Flav was real when he said 911 was a joke."

"Black folks, when you get in trouble [and you] call 911, please sound white when you call ... We all sound white when we need to."

The Words of Jason Whitlock: Black Culture and America

As the week has moved forth, the topic on every sports fan mind in the Washington region has been on the death of Sean Taylor. Almost every sporting website, blog, talk radio show and newspaper has looked into the lifestyle, family, and everything else can you think of about the fallen safety.

While I was on break at work, I read Jason Whitlock's provocative article titled "Taylor's Death A Grim Reminder For Us All", that looks how the pervasive images of black America an...

Our Duty To Protect Our Cleints' Financial Interests

Four NFL players have died this year, all of them just 24 years young. Sean Taylor is the most recent victim to be taken out of our world. How may a sports agent protect his client and the client's family in case of the unfortunate circumstance of an early death?

Andy Zimmerman, a financial consultant specializing in estate planning and investments at PNC Bank in Pittsburgh, PA sent me an email with some great commentary on the subject. The "you" he is referring to is me (Darren Heitner):

It WILL be your responsibility and your cohorts as future Sports Agents to help these young athletes do proper financial and estate planning. You will have to advocate for their families and for themselves. How many of your peers are worried about planning, investing or saving? VERY FEW and that holds true for these guys throwing themselves around on the field or ball diamond, THEY'RE YOUR AGE [22] AND YOUNGER! Their biggest worry, as one guy told me is "bling, beer and bitches", not-to-mention looking great on the highlight reel. They're SUPERMEN, injury and death just happens to "other" people. They think they're in primo-shape and invincible.

Someone posted the rookie $150,000 policy (that covers the 2 cars in the garage of most of these players). Most financial planners will use a figure somewhere between 7 to 10 times one's earnings (but also look at age, expenses and future earnings). Disability insurance is extremely expensive but worth every penny if you're getting $50K per night that you pitch and you tear your rotator cuff. These guys have so few years to build a lifetime's worth of earnings (which is why I have a problem with the NFL health benefits/pension for old timer's; the abuse these guys bodies have taken is horrendous).

You will have to develop your contacts within the financial sphere: for tax, asset management, estate planning, divorce (as mentioned in a previous post). There are a lot of shoddy financial planners, trust depts, brokers, etc. Some may work at big-time firms or have their own; you'll have to feel them out. Look for solid credentials CFP, CFA, CPA after their names before recommending and make sure they've got 10 years behind them (so that they survived 2000, 2001, and 2002 undulating financial markets)…don't just recommend your buddy from the fraternity b/c he joined a firm that's well known. The financial industry has over a 75% failure rate for first year hires. The NFLPA has done some filtering of advisors and made some hoops to jump through, but other player associations aren't so choosy.

The reality is that most agents won't take the proper steps to ensure financial security of their clients. NO one wakes up and says, "I think I'm going to do some estate planning today"; I'm sure Sean Taylor didn't, and I don't know how insistent Drew Rosenhaus is for his young clients to do so. But it still may be beneficial. I hope that you and the future sports agents that read your blog take on a greater degree of responsibility of either providing for or recommending that EACH of their clients sit down with someone to take care of financial responsibility they have for themselves and their family.

As some of you may know, I live in the Washington-Baltimore area, am a Redskins' fan, and I whipped up a post about on the death of Sean Taylor this morning. I have also have been covering the tragic news of Mr. Taylor online and in my car on sports talk radio.

Well, in the hours since his death, I have seen the best and worst of the media in the coverage of this event. It seems within the last 12 or so hours I have heard every opinion, thought, speech said and read just about every wo...

One word: unacceptable

There are varying opinions on this whole Sean Taylor thing, but I think all of can agree that no matter how you look at it, it's sad. It's not something you make tasteless jokes about. With Leather and others have all put joking aside when it comes to a young father's death. But these guys haven't. I'm not saying to do it, but if anyone knows how to make this site crash and never come back again or something, I wouldn't complain if you did.
