Marleau, Pavelski lead Sharks into 2nd round

A year after being among the main perpetrators of another playoff failure in San Jose, Patrick Marleau and Joe Pavelski are leading the Sharks back to the second round.

Marleau scored the series clincher in overtime against Vancouver on Tuesday night, giving him one goal in all four games of the sweep over the Canucks.

Marleau got that overtime chance only because Pavelski scored the game-tying goal on the power play with 4:27 to go. That gave Pavelski his second straight two-goal game in the series.

It's a far cry from a year ago when both players failed to record even a single point in a five-game, first-round loss to St. Louis that ended a run of two straight trips to the Western Conference finals.

''You lose in five last year it's tough,'' Pavelski said. ''You always want to contribute more, you want to be better. You want to play as long as you can as well as you can. It's good to come out and have a start like this and get some confidence early. It's good to s

In sin bin, Canucks defenseman Kevin Bieksa ridiculed by Sharks fans (video)

The San Jose Sharks mercifully ended the season for the Vancouver Canucks on Tuesday night, completing the series sweep courtesy of a 4-3 overtime victory in front of the hometown fans at HP Pavilion. And while the game was not without controversy — a controversial boarding penalty called on Daniel Sedin (his brother Henrik called the penalty “bulls**t”) led to Patrick Marleau’s series-clinching goal 13:18 into the extra session — but perhaps the most amusing scene occurred when Canucks defenseman Kevin Bieksa was sent to the sin bin late in the 3rd period. Bieksa accused Sharks forwards Logan Couture and Joe Thornton of embellishment in attempts to draw penalties throughout the series, and when he was shipped to penalty box for cross checking, two Sharks fans let him have it. I’m not particularly astute at deciphering non-verbal communication, but I’m pretty sure these two Sharks fans are accusing Bieksa of being a crybaby: Yeah, that’s definitely what they’re doing. And the fans’...

San Jose Sharks Sweep the Vancouver Canucks!

Somewhere Jeremy Roenick is pinching himself to see if this is all a dream. Patrick Marleau, the player Roenick has so often attacked as being “soft,” sent the Sharks to the second round of the NHL Playoffs Tuesday night with a goal in overtime to seal the sweep of the Vancouver Canucks.
Joe Thornton took a power-play shot that managed to sneak past Vancouver goalie Cory Schneider but was coming to a stop. Only, it didn’t come to a stop because Marleau, following up the play, was able to tap it into the goal for the game winner. With the overtime winner, Marleau has scored a goal in each of the four playoff games that San Jose has played so far this post season.
A little vindication perhaps, although Marleau would likely never admit it.
San Jose was staked to an early 2-1 lead through the first 20 minutes of hockey with Brent Burns and Joe Pavelski each scoring goals in the first period. Mason Raymond added a goal for Vancouver.
After the Canucks managed to take a brief 3-2 lead in...

Sharks sweep Canucks with 4-3 win in OT

One year after another disappointing early playoff exit, Patrick Marleau gave the San Jose Sharks a new postseason experience.

Marleau scored a power-play goal 13:18 into overtime and the Sharks completed their first playoff sweep in franchise history, beating the Vancouver Canucks 4-3 on Tuesday night.

Now instead of facing questions about their playoff fortitude like they did a year ago following a five-game loss in the first round to St. Louis, the Sharks will get a few days to rest up before the second round following their third comeback win of the series.

''We just plugged away,'' captain Joe Thornton said. ''It doesn't matter what the score is or what time of the game it's at. We just keep plugging away. We just have so much fun together. We're really enjoying it and we want to keep it going as long as we can.

Joe Pavelski scored his second power-play goal of the game to tie it with 4:27 left in regulation. Brent Burns also scored, Thornton had three assists and

Sharks pick up road win in Vancouver

Dan Boyle and Patrick Marleau scored in the third period for the San Jose Sharks, who rallied to beat the Vancouver Canucks 3-1 on Wednesday night in the first-round Western Conference series opener.

Boyle and Logan Couture both had a goal and an assist, and Marleau pushed San Jose's lead to 3-1. Antti Niemi made 28 saves for the Sharks, who were outshot 30-28.

Kevin Bieksa scored for the Canucks before a disappointed white-towel-waving sellout crowd. The loss spoiled a strong effort from goalie Roberto Luongo, who earned the start after Cory Schneider didn't recover in time from an undisclosed injury.

The Canucks were the first home team to lose in the first six games of this year's playoffs.

Patrick Marleau scored the winner in the shootout and had a short-handed goal early in the game, lifting the San Jose Sharks to a 3-2 win over the Detroit Red Wings on Thursday night.

Antti Niemi made 27 saves through overtime, while Jimmy Howard stopped 28 shots for Detroit. Niemi got his glove on Niklas Kronwall's slap shot with 44 seconds left in the extra period, giving the Sharks a chance in the shootout.

San Jose, trying to earn home-ice advantage in the first round of the playoffs, is in fourth place in the Western Conference, one point ahead of St. Louis and Los Angeles. The Kings were facing Colorado later Thursday

The Red Wings, clinging to the eighth and final playoff spot in the West, are hoping to extend the franchise's streak of consecutive postseason appearances to 22 but have lost five of their last seven games.

'Multi' Marleau makes history in SJ win

About the only thing Patrick Marleau is struggling at so far this season is finding an explanation for his record start.

Marleau became the second player in NHL history to open a season with four straight multigoal games, striking twice on the power play in the first period Saturday in the San Jose Sharks' 4-0 victory over the Colorado Avalanche.

''I'll keep taking them if they keep coming,'' he said. ''That's for sure.''

Marleau has scored two goals in each game this season, joining Ottawa's Cy Denneny in 1917-18 as the only players to open a campaign with four multigoal games, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

''He obviously has a hot hand right now,'' defenseman Brad Stuart said. ''We'll need contributions from everyone at some point. But right now Patty is playing amazing and putting the puck in the net every time he touches it, it seems like.''

Both of Marleau's goals came after Ryan O'Byrne took two addi

Putting Patrick Marleau’s hot start in perspective

Nobody in the NHL is having a better start to the season than Patrick Marleau. The Sharks have started the season 4-0, thanks in large part to Marleau’s torrid pace out of the gate. Marleau added two more goals in the Sharks 4-0 win over the Avs on Saturday to bring to his league-best tally to eight (Chicago’s Marian Hossa follows with five). He’s scored twice in each of San Jose’s games. How impressive of a start is that? As of writing, Marleau by himself has more goals than six other teams this season: Panthers (7), Oilers (7), Flames (7), Blue Jackets (6), Flyers (5), Kings (4). Yes, Patrick Marleau alone has twice the number of goals than the defending Stanley Cup champion Kings do. What’s more, the entire Sharks first line is off to a fantastic start. Marleau has 11 points, Joe Thornton leads the league with 11 points, and Joe Pavelski has 8 points. H/T Fear the Fin

Marleau scores twice as Sharks rally past Flames

CALGARY -- Patrick Marleau was the target of a caustic profile on a Calgary radio station in days leading up to the start of the NHL season. The San Jose Sharks forward was mocked for his reputation of not being a big-game player for a team that has failed repeatedly to live up to Stanley Cup-championship expectations. Marleau got the last laugh Sunday, scoring twice in the Sharks' 4-1 victory over the Calgary Flames in the opener for both teams. He said he didn't hear the radio bit -- among the knocks was how his captaincy was stripped a few years ago and how he conserves energy over the course of the season for the annual "five-game" playoff run -- but he wasn't fazed. He was more concerned about starting the season on the right note. "You don't normally get your first goal in January," Marleau said in a reference to the season's late start following a lockout. "It was a good first game, and we have a bunch more to go." ...

Sharks' Patrick Marleau makes bombshell statement about NHL intentions

Patrick Marleau's a pretty unassuming guy. He's also a great team guy, willing to make a personal sacrifice like giving up the C for his team. Also, he's the bane of Jeremy Roenick's existence, so that's another plus. Marleau hasn't said too much about the NHL Lockout, but with the league cancelling all games through November 30th, he came out with a statement today that's been overlooked, but is a PR bombshell for the NHL if it's true. In a text message sent to radio host Josh Rimer, Marleau said this: "The league had these games canceled already in the summer. They are just releasing that info now," Marleau texted Rimer. "Every time we move closer, they pull further away." It doesn't take much to read into what this might mean. If the NHL was already planning on cutting games all the way in the summer, when the CBA bargaining was just beginning, in how much good faith were these negotiations entered in to? Did the ...
