Roadtrip to Russia: An Update

A bit of a Cold War summit took place this week in Washington, with NHL commissioner Gary Bettman convening with his Russian counterpart, KHL President Alexander Medvedev. They chatted a bit about player contracts, as you might imagine. Dmitry Chesnokov had the opportunity to interview Medvedev mere moments after the meeting, and recounted the exchange today at Puck Daddy. One portion of it in particular caught my eye:
Chesnokov: Is it a reality now that the Washington Capitals, for example...

On Injury Confidentiality and Its Collision with a New and Rabid Fanbase

Has there ever been a week of hour-to-hour hyperventilating over the health status of a hockey player in D.C. the likes of which we’ve seen with Alexander Ovechkin here the past week? I think not.
This is unchartered territory for Washington’s hockey fans. The Russian Machine at long last has broken down. He seemed indestructable. Now we know he’s a physical mortal (somewhat), and deprived of his prowess we are not taking his absence well.
We are not getting any work done ...

Ovechkin leaves game vs. Columbus; coy about injury severity

In the second period of the Washington Capitals 5-4 overtime loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets, Alexander Ovechkin fell to the ice awkwardly after getting twisted up with Raffi Torres(notes). He got up, favoring his left side, and immediately skated to the Capitals bench before heading to the locker room. The Capitals are calling it an "upper body" injury, and at one point during the game GM George McPhee was saying Ovechkin could return. But he missed most of the second period and ...

No. 1 star, Alexander Ovechkin, Washington Capitals:Alexander Ovechkin gets all the headlines for his goal-scoring, but besides lighting the lamp twice on Thursday night he was a leader when the Capitals needed it most. Winless in their last four games after starting the second with consecutive wins, Ovechkin knew the last thing Washington needed was a team traveling cross country to step on the Caps' home ice and continue the team's recent slide. Ovechkin and Co. established they wou...

Kid On Message Board Threatens to Kill Ovechkin

Pittsburgh police and the NHL are investigating a threat made against Alexander Ovechkin. A 17-year old boy posted on a Penguins fan site that "I'm killing Ovechkin. I'll go to jail. I don't care anymore." Needless to say, Ovie has added security for the Caps-Pens Game 4 in Pittsburgh. Apparently the threat was made the afternoon before Wednesday's Game 3. Ovechkin scored his fifth goal of the series in that game, but the Capitals lost, 3-2 in OT.

I’ve had enough of all this Ovechkin business. So he celebrated after a
goal when he scored his 50th of the season against the hapless Tampa
Bay Lightning? In the words of George Bush, “so what?” Every fan of
hockey (Caps fans not included) has been burned by AO. It feels bad. It
makes you angry. It makes you wish your team would check him through
the boards. It makes you wish he was on your team. It makes you…want to

Don Cherry continues to call Alex Ovechkin out for his antics in the latest installment of Coach's Corner - this time for his 50th goal celebration. It seems as though Cherry has softened his stance a bit on the Russian who just likes to have a good time. It must eat Cherry up inside that almost every edition of his show is dedicated to Alex.

Alexander Ovechkin is the best pure goal scorer the NHL has seen in quite a while (if he played 20 years ago, he might?ve scored 100 in a season), but the Capitals are a bit perturbed over a story in MAXIM that portrays Ovechkin as a Skoal chewin?, blond lovin?, fast drivin?

While the national media continues to show the Flyers a lack of respect, I will concede that the Canadiens are a dangerous hockey team that is going to give the Flyers fits. They have three quality scoring lines that are fast and will make the Flyers slow de...
