Alexander Ovechkin responds to Mike Milbury’s criticism

After getting shredded by Mike Milbury on NBC Sports Network between periods of the Washington Capitals-Philadelphia Flyers game, Washington Capitals captain Alexander Ovechkin responded to the criticism Milbury handed out.
Quite honestly, this is the best response Ovechkin could have had. Milbury had a short career as a head coach at Boston College, lasting only three months. But in his one-year stint as head coach for the Boston Bruins in the 1989-1990 season, he led them to the Stanley Cup finals.
Milbury’s real problems though came when he was General Manager of the New York Islanders. Most notably he traded Roberto Luongo and Olli Jokinen for Oleg Kvasha and Mark Parrish, drafted Rick DiPietro 1st overall in 2000 over Marian Gaborik and Dany Heatley, and then in 2001, he traded Zdeno Chara and the 2nd overall pick (Jason Spezza) for Alexei Yashin. Needless to say, there’s a reason he is on TV and not working in an NHL Front Office somewhere.

Weiss returns after grandmother's funeral

SUNRISE, Fla. The heart of the Florida Panthers has been playing with a heavy one.

Stephen Weiss, the longest tenured Panther, returned to the team Thursday after attending his grandmother's funeral in Toronto.

This season has been a rough one for Weiss, both on and off the ice, and Sunday may have been its lowest point. After failing to click on the top line with Jonathan Huberdeau and Peter Mueller, Weiss found himself benched by coach Kevin Dineen for most of the third period in Florida's 4-1 loss to the Boston Bruins. Not long after the contest, Weiss learned of his grandmother's passing.

"I didn't know until after the Boston game," Weiss said. "I talked to my dad and he let me know she passed that morning. I knew she was not in the best shape over the past year, the quality of life was a little bit low. But certainly over the past couple days before the Boston game, she wasn't doing too well."

Weiss is the type of player who refuses to make excuses for his on-

Kyle Turris Fallout

In the wake of yesterday’s announcement that Kyle Turris has signed a five-year contract extension with the Ottawa Senators, it is always fun to scan the Interwebs and monitor the reactions of the greater hockey community; especially those from outside the nation’s capital.
The Edmonton Journal’s Jim Matheson had this take for example:
I know the Oilers and Sam Gagner were saying all the right things after they agreed on a one-year, $3.2 million deal a month or so ago. Both sides were happy to get it done and move on and think about a longer term after the 2012-2013 season, should we have one or a truncated one (70 games, 60 games, 50 games?), but Gagner signed for less money than Kyle Turris, who couldn’t carry his equipment bag judged by his NHL stats so far, just got in Ottawa.
It’s obvious the Senators see Turris as their No. 2 centre behind Jason Spezza for years to come even though he is coming off a 29-point season in 55 games. He does have the tools–he was drafted third...

Report: Panthers Are Front-Runners to Land Roberto Luongo

Roberto Luongo's days in Vancouver are likely over, and a return to the Sunshine State could be on the horizon. TSN's Bob McKenzie tweeted Thursday that his colleague Darren Dreger reports that the Florida Panthers are the front-runners to land the veteran netminder. According to McKenzie, Dreger says that dialogue continues between the two clubs, which is something that can't be said for the Canucks and Maple Leafs (another team rumored to be pursuing Luongo). Luongo spent five seasons with the Panthers from 2000 to 2006 after the Islanders dealt him with Olli Jokinen for Mark Parrish and Oleg Kvasha...

Assistant GM Tim Murray Speaks on Zibanejad, Silfverberg, Stone

This afternoon on the Team 1200's Healthy Scratches, Senators Assistant GM Tim Murray was on to talk to Jason York and Steve Lloyd about the playoff match up with the New York Rangers, scouting Erik Karlsson, and liking fourteen prospects in the upcoming draft. The interview itself lasts for almost twenty minutes, so I'm not going to bother transcribing all of it. It was a worthwhile listen, so I encourage you to check it out. Now having said that, here are a few nuggets of information that interested me. As always, my thoughts are in bold.

York: When you look at the Bingo grads who won (the Calder Cup) and made that jump, how much stock to do you put in how good that program has become?
TM: Well, I put everything into it. It’s development. I don’t know the percentages but your first, second and third overall picks normally play in the league right away. But there are seven rounds in the draft and thirty players per round. There are college free agents. There are free a...

2012 Minnesota Boys State High School Hockey Tournament Preview

It know millions of Americans get pumped up for 'March Madness' that is the Men's NCAA Basketball tournament. Its the place where people invented stupid words like 'bracketology' and just about any workplace offered a pick 'em pool where you may have a $10-$20 buy in. Yet in Minnesota they have their own version of March Madness in the form of the State Tournaments; but one tournament trumps them all. That is the Boys State Hockey Tournament. No High School State Tournament in Minnesota quite has the energy and momentum the Boys Hockey Tournament does. I think a big reason the Boys State Hockey Tournament captures the imagination is the understanding that there will be future NHL players performing there. The list of names of players that once played in the State Tournament are a virtual who's who of Minnesota hockey. Just to name a few of these tournament attendees who made it to the NHL with varying degrees of success were Phil Housely, Scott Bju...

Trade Deficit

It's something that us Los Angeles Kings fans love to joke about. Trade us your superstar... your consistent goal scorer... your playmaking center... and within a few games he'll have completely forgotten how to play the game of hockey or at least he'll get injured in the process. Of course in the LA Kings Blogosphere, all the rage right now is to bash on 2011 Trade Deadline Acquisition, Dustin Penner, for his inability to produce goals and points as a Los Angeles King. Penner was brought in to be the 1st Line Left Winger and I mean... I know it's been bad... but just how bad has Dustin Penner been as a King? Let's take a look at his 4 years as an Edmonton Oiler.

Watch Islanders’ John Tavares score OT winner out of mid-air vs. Carolina (Video)

Jeff Skinner told the Carolina Hurricanes' broadcasters that he's never seen a player bat pucks out of the air better than John Tavares of the New York Islanders.
That proved prophetic on Saturday night, as Tavares scored this awesome game-winner in overtime -- deflecting a rebound of his own shot past Cam Ward:

Thank you, years of lacrosse.
The Islanders won the game, 2-1, as Tavares scored both goals to give him 19 on the season. He has a 12-game points streak, the longest since Mark Parrish had a 12-gamer early in the 2001-02 season, according to AP.

John Tavares scored his second goal of the game 3:58 into overtime, and the New York Islanders beat the Carolina Hurricanes 2-1 on Saturday night for their third straight win.

Tavares scored his 19th goal of the season after extending his career-best point streak to 12 games with a second-period goal. Tavares has eight goals and 13 assists during his streak, the longest in the NHL this season.

Evgeni Nabokov stopped 32 shots for the Islanders (19-21-6), who have won four of five and five of seven. It was also the fourth straight win for Nabokov, a season high for Islanders goalies.

Jeff Skinner gave Carolina a 1-0 lead in the first period.

New York has allowed only four goals in four games. The Islanders won at Philadelphia and Washington this week after losing at home to Nashville on Monday.

The Islanders peppered goalie Cam Ward with a season-best 23 shots in the second period, but had only 17 the rest of the game in finishing with a total of 40.

Ottawa Prospect Patrick Wiercioch Takes A Puck To The Throat

from the Press & Sun-Bulletin, A tough loss was overshadowed by a terrifying injury Friday night, as Binghamton Senators defenseman Patrick Wiercioch was hospitalized after being hit in the throat by a puck during the first period of the Norfolk Admirals’ 5-1 win at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena.

Wiercioch was struck by a clearing attempt during a power play three minutes and eight seconds into the game. He immediately dropped to the ice and needed several minutes before being helped to the runway by trainer Glen Kinney and captain Mark Parrish.

“I’ve heard that he’s being attended to,” B-Sens coach Kurt Kleinendorst said after the game. “I know he’s in capable hands. We don’t know much more than that. We’ll just keep him in our prayers.”

TRH Recap 13: It'z No Good

I just wish there was some way to visually represent the frustration on the faces of the players for the Los Angeles Kings right now.

PENGUINS 3, KINGS 2 (SO)
Click Here to Read the Rest of The Royal Half Recap!!!

Well... on the bright side, at least the Kings scored two 5 on 5 goals! The difference must have been Kevin Westgarth and his 4 shifts for a total of 2 min and 10 seconds. But I understand why Coach Murray made the move to bring his enforcer into the lineup. When the Penguins are in town... all sorts of weirdos from Pittsburgh show up.
