Jeff Gorton, Bruins Give Hope For The Future

Suffice to say that a 3-0 series deficit was not the plan. The powerplay is more miserable than it has ever been, and that is saying a lot. Brad Richards has, in one season, gone from playoff hero to playoff zero. Injuries are affecting important players. The Rangers look like a team with no confidence.

That being said, at some point we have to acknowledge that the Bruins are a good team. A really good team. A really, really good team. They have the right combination of high-end talent along with strong depth and a confident, talented goaltender. This is a team that won the Stanley Cup two seasons ago and could be on their way to another one. Jeff Gorton was GM of the Bruins for not even four full months, yet is a big reason behind the success of this Bruins team. Jeff Gorton is also the current Assistant General Manager of the New York Rangers. Ironically, the Bruins' beating up on the Rangers, though far from preferable, does in some sense give hope for the future. Let&#...

Bruins Back In The Day: A Boyish Bergeron Takes A Spin On A…Zamboni? (VIDEO)

It’s incredible to think that Patrice Bergeron has been a member of the Boston Bruins for 10 years. And to make us all feel old…..he is ONLY 27.
How time flies when you mature into one of the best two way players in the game.

But who can forget Bergy as the young buck from Quebec?
Who remembers this commercial from 2004 with then franchise goalie Andrew Raycroft?
Bahahaha…..wow I am glad we have Tuukka!

Patrice Bergeron Has Come a Long Way Since 2004 Emmy Award Winning Performance (Video)

Patrice Bergeron is one of Boston’s most-beloved athletes these days, but how many Bruins fans remember the 18-year-old kid who joined the team back in 2003 and lived with teammate Martin Lapointe and his family?
Bergie has come a long way since his rookie year, earning many individual awards, hoisting a Stanley Cup and being named the team’s alternate captain.
Back when he first joined the B’s, Bergeron and then-teammate, goalie Andrew Raycroft, starred in a memorable NESN promo, which can be seen below. The commercial was called “Zamboni on the Lenny,” and it even scored NESN an Emmy Award.

Tuukka Rask’s Career Game Comes at Perfect Time for Bruins in Game 3 Against Toronto

There was a lot of talking entering the Bruins’ first-round matchup with the Toronto Maple Leafs around the Phil Kessel trade that played a huge role in molding the future of both franchises. Rightfully so, as the deal and of the parties involved, makes for fascinating stuff and fun banter.
However, the deal that wasn’t mentioned as much, might be the one that plays the biggest role in the series. It certainly did in Game 3.
That deal was the one that brought Tuukka Rask to Boston in 2006 in exchange for Andrew Raycroft. While Raycroft didn’t do much of anything after leaving Boston, Rask has evolved into the Bruins’ No. 1 goaltender. On Monday night in Toronto, Rask turned in his finest performance as an NHL netminder.
The Finnish goalie made 46 saves in a 5-2 Bruins win, a pivotal Game 3 in front of a rabid Toronto crowd that gave the Bruins the 2-1 series lead. Rask was good from the get-go, making save after save, and he turned his game on in a big way in the third period. Rask ...

Andrew Raycroft Was the Last Bruin to Win the NHL Rookie of the Year Award

Eight Bruins have won the NHL’s Calder Memorial Trophy — which is given to the rookie of the year — but winning it doesn’t always necessarily mean you’re on the path to stardom.
While Bobby Orr and Ray Bourque won the award and now have their numbers retired at the TD Garden, some players — including the person who is Tuesday’s answer to The Four’s Trivia Question of the Day — simply couldn’t keep things rolling after an incredible first season.
Andrew Raycroft, the last Bruin to win the award (2002-04) is now tending net in Italy’s Serie A league, proving you’re only as good as your next start. Former Bruins forward Sergei Samsonov won the award in 1997-98.
Answer The Four’s Trivia Question of the Day and enter to win a $50 gift card to one of The Four’s three Boston-area locations. Read the official rules here.

What Happened to Raycroft?

As every hockey fan knows, being a goaltender in the National Hockey League is not an easy job.

You can be great for one game, one season etc. and then the next game or season, completely lose it. Just look at what happened to the likes of Jim Carey or Blaine Lacher.

Another goaltender who has had both good times and bad is recently waived member of the Dallas Stars Andrew Raycroft. After winning the Calder Trophy as the league’s rookie of the year in the 2003-04 season, Raycroft has never been the same netminder.
When Raycroft got started in the NHL in the 2003-04 season, he was absolutely terrific. He played big, was confident, did not allow many soft goals and put up great numbers with 29 wins, a 2.05 goals against average, a .926 save percentage and 3 shutouts.

The 31-year-old went 2-8-0 with a 3.52 goals-against average and an .898 save percentage in 10 games with Dallas. With Lehtonen having returned from a groin injury and Richard Bachman playing well enough to seize the backup role, Raycroft became expendable. The former Calder Trophy winner has played parts of 11 seasons in the NHL with Boston, Toronto, Colorado, Vancouver and Dallas.

Stars to place G Raycroft on waivers with Lehtonen set to return

The Dallas Stars will place backup goaltender Andrew Raycroft on waivers Wednesday morning.
The team will make the move due to the expected return of Kari Lehtonen, who has been sidelined since Nov. 26 with a groin injury.
Rookie Richard Bachman was called up from the minors after Lehtonen's injury and has supplanted Raycroft as the backup.
Bachman has gone 5-2-0 with a 2.76 goals-against average in eight starts. Raycroft has struggled with a 2-8-0 record and 3.52 GAA.
Lehtonen is expected to be back for Thursday's game against Columbus. He was off to a sizzling start prior to getting hurt with a 13-4-1 record and 2.34 GAA.

Anyone Want Andrew Raycroft?

from Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News, Kari Lehtonen should be ready to play Thursday against Columbus, and that has forced some decisions on goaltending today, Stars GM Joe Nieuwendyk said.

The Stars today informed goalie Andrew Raycroft that he will be placed on waivers Wednesday at 11 a.m. That would allow the Stars enough time to activate Lehtonen so he can play Thursday against Columbus.

Lehtonen has been out since Nov. 26 with a groin injury, but has been going through full practices and appears ready to return.

In the mean time, rookie Richard Bachman has taken over the backup goalie position. He is 5-2-0 in his eight NHL starts with a 2.76 GAA and .912 save percentage.

Rebound control, Raycroft costs Stars in 5-2 loss to Sharks

Final
Dallas Stars 2 - San Jose Sharks 5
The Stars fell to the Sharks 5-2 last night in a game in which the outcome was pretty much decided within two minutes. San Jose scored twice on Andrew Raycroft in the first minute and a half of the game, setting the tone for the rest of the night. Raycroft was actually doing a fine job stopping the first shots that the Sharks had. The problem was that he was giving up juicy rebounds on each shot and it wound up costing the Stars.
Raycroft just couldn't block the puck over to safe areas and the defense was beaten to the loose puck by the Sharks forwards. Dallas fell behind 2-0 after the first couple of minutes but were able to fight their way back into the game. Brenden Morrow made his return memorable with an assist on a Mike Ribeiro goal late in the first period and then scoring a power-play (power-play!) goal of his own in the second.

Things went awry again after that PP goal though as Raycroft once again couldn't control rebo...

Stars ride Raycroft, Ryder to a 3-1 win over the Avs

Final
Dallas Stars 3 - Colorado Avalanche 1
For one game at least, the Stars injury woes didn't come back to haunt them as they put away the Colorado Avalanche 3-1. Andrew Raycroft put in a Kari Lehtonen-like performance, stopping 35 of 36 shots (many of them at point-blank range), and Michael Ryder played through a nagging leg injury to score two big goals.
Stars fan couldn't have asked for much more than what they saw last night. They saw what Raycroft could be when he's on his game. They saw just how pesky the Stars could be despite playing without two of their top four defensemen and two important forwards (including the captain). They saw the Ryder-Benn-Eriksson line return to form and take over a game. In their first game dealing with all these major injuries, this was about as good as anyone could hope for.

Jamie Benn played a monster game last night. He didn't register a point but he was all over the ice. He had about three or four great scoring chance...

Raycroft helps Stars top Avs

This win was well worth the wait for Dallas Stars goalie Andrew Raycroft.

Raycroft stopped 35 shots for his first win in nearly a year as the Stars beat the Colorado Avalanche 3-1 on Monday night.

''It would have been nice to get one earlier,'' said the 10-year veteran, who signed with the Stars for this season. ''That's the way it goes, but I played well enough to get one.''

Not only did it lift Raycroft's spirits, but those of his teammates, too. They will be relying on him while Kari Lehtonen is sidelined by a knee injury.

''Raycroft was huge for us. Nice for our guys to have some confidence in him,'' Dallas coach Glen Gulutzan said. ''It's good for his confidence moving forward because we are going without Kari Lehtonen for a while.''

Raycroft (1-5) hadn't won since beating Minnesota on Jan. 9. He made his first start since taking over for Lehtonen, who was placed on the injured list on Sunday after he hurt his right knee

Stars shine in victory over Avalanche

DENVER (AP) -- Andrew Raycroft stopped 35 shots for his first win in nearly a year, and the Dallas Stars beat the Colorado Avalanche 3-1 on Monday night.

Raycroft (1-5) hadn't won since beating Minnesota on Jan. 9. He made his first start since taking over for Kari Lehtonen, who was placed on the injured list on Sunday after he hurt his right knee against Phoenix.

Michael Ryder scored two goals, and Eric Nystrom added his eighth of the season for the Stars.

Kevin Porter spoiled Raycroft's shutout bid with his first this season, but Colorado fell to 4-9 at home.

The Avalanche entered with the NHL's second-best power play, but went 0 for 3. Semyon Varlamov made 32 saves.

The Avalanche had a 11-8 shot advantage in the first period, but Dallas led 1-0 at the intermission on Nystrom's rebound goal.

Vernon Fiddler sent a slap shot from the slot after an Avalanche turnover. Varlamov made a stick save, but Nystrom crashed the net for the loose puck and easily scored at 15:56.
