Top Five Moments In Penguins-Senators Playoff History

For whatever reason, the Penguins and Senators have met an unrealistic amount of times in the playoffs. This year's series does mark the first time they haven't met in the first round.

The matchups have delivered some great moments.

	First, some honorable mentions.

-- 2008, Gary Roberts scoring the first goal of the series then basically fighting the entire Senators team.

-- And then there was Andy Sutton and his "Are You An Expert?"

	So odd.

	Our top five moments:

	5. 2008 Quarterfinals Game 3 -- The Intro from hell

Maybe the most embarrassing intro of all time. No one is even sure that the Senators have recovered from it.

Imagine how much the guy who played the Senator regrets this. He probably stayed up the night before hyping himself up. The Pens steamrolled the Sens in this series in a sweep.

	4. 2008 Quarterfinals Game 2 -- Ryan Malone's GWG

Our recap from back in the day: The Great Escape

Iron drop down despite victory

Southampton boss Mauricio Pochettino could not hide his disappointment with his side's below-par display against West Brom.

The lacklustre performance was the worst since the Argentinian replaced Nigel Adkins at the helm in January and brought an abrupt end to a six-match unbeaten streak.

"From my point of view we just didn't start in the game," Pochettino told Sky Sports.

"We didn't feel comfortable, especially when we conceded the first goal in the sixth minute.

"Then we became a bit fearful of their attacking strikers, who were quite fast, strong and physically fit."

Saints duo Gaston Ramirez and Danny Fox were given their marching orders in a fiery clash with the Baggies, which was all the more surprising considering how little both sides had to play for.

"I need to review the images on the TV and we'll see later on if they are actually red cards," he added.

"But what is true is that the team showed a side that has nothing to do with who we ar

Penguins Update: No To-Morrow for Brenden

With all due respect to Jarome Iginla, Jussi Jokinen, and Douglas Murray, my favorite Penguins acquisition at the 2013 trade deadline was Brenden Morrow.Call me old school, but ever since “Scary” Gary Roberts left the ‘Burgh during the summer of 2008 I’ve felt the Pens have lacked a certain element. Call it “functional snarl,” if you will. I knew the 34-year-old Morrow might be just the guy to supply it.One look at the 6’0”, 205-pounder’s battle-scared mug tells you all you need to know about his game. Morrow’s a human buzz-saw who seems to go out of his way to get up close and personal with the enemy. In front of the opposing net he’s a virtual Tasmanian Devil on skates—whacking and hacking for every inch of available space.Given his age and abrasive style of play—not to mention his declining numbers over the past couple of seasons—I wasn’t sure how much juice the native of Carlyle, Saskatchewan had left. When he was held without a point in his first four games wearing the black

Moore: It's self destruction

Tranmere boss Ronnie Moore believes his side shot themselves in the foot as they suffered a 3-1 loss at the hands of Swindon.

Two second-half goals from James Collins and Gary Roberts gave the visitors a comfortable lead in Tuesday night's League One clash at Prenton Park, but Donervon Daniels looked to have set up a nervy finale when he struck with 12 minutes remaining.

But Roberts then netted from inside his own half after goalkeeper Owain fon Williams had gone forward for a corner to leave Tranmere in the bottom play-off spot.

"It's self destruction," Moore said. "We've lost the game because we've made silly wrong decisions.

"The goalkeeper makes a mistake for the first then he gives them the third with a miss-kick straight to the lad who to be fair smashes it from 50-60 yards and it goes in. It's frustrating for everybody, there's no doubt about that.

"It's serious for us. We need to get back to winning ways. One or two in the crowd were having a g

Robins and Blades share spoils

Danny Wilson returned to old club Swindon and left top of the League One table as Sheffield United earned a 0-0 draw at the County Ground.

The hosts twice hit the woodwork through Matt Ritchie and Gary Roberts, but United almost snatched a last-minute winner themselves when Neill Collins' effort was hacked from the line by Jay McEveley.

Ritchie might have scored in the second minute with a volley which struck the top of the Blades' bar and Roberts struck a post with a shot from just inside the area shortly after the interval.

Wilson's side had few opportunities with Matt Hill and Ryan Flynn heading wide from good positions in the second half.

Swindon manager Paolo Di Canio once strayed two yards on to the pitch to remonstrate with his defence as his team earned a valuable draw to stay in touch with the division's pacesetters.

Collins late show denies City

James Collins scored a late equaliser as Swindon fought back from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Coventry at the County Ground.

Sky Blues fan James Collins scored against the team he has supported since childhood as his side fought back.

Paolo di Canio's side looked to be heading for a surprise defeat after David McGoldrick's first-half double had put the struggling Sky Blues in control.

Gary Roberts' 77th-minute strike followed by substitute Collins' powerfully-struck volley three minutes later earned the promotion-chasers an unlikely point.

Swindon winger Matt Ritchie saw his second-minute shot strike the post before McGoldrick headed in John Fleck's left-wing free-kick after 13 minutes.

Striker McGoldrick doubled his and the visitors' tally eight minutes before half-time, rifling home from 10 yards after Swindon goalkeeper Wes Foderingham flapped at a Fleck corner.

Roberts reduced the arrears by volleying in from six yards after Tommy Miller had flicked on Alan Navarro's

Thomas Prepping for Run at Roster Spot

Looks like Christian Thomas is serious about making a run for a roster spot in camp this season as he is a participant in Gary Roberts BioSteel camp this week......wonder if they have a rack at that camp to stretch Thomas out....in all seriousness, love seeing Thomas dedicating himself by participating in a high level camp. Nothing wrong with working out with players such a Stamkos, Seguin and Cammalleri....despite my constant hating on Thomas, he has a legit chance of making the roster this season.Michael Del Zotto is also participating in the camp.Remember to follow me on Twitter & Facebook or e-mail me at nyrfan94@yahoo.com.

Train With Steven Stamkos

	from Dan Rosen of NHL.com,

It's not easy to put Gary Roberts out of commission. Steven Stamkos almost did it in with one powerful squeeze this summer.

Stamkos, the Tampa Bay Lightning center, was playfully roughhousing with Roberts, a man 24 years his elder but one many consider to be among the toughest to ever play in the NHL. Stamkos put a vicelike grip on Roberts' bicep, and Roberts' arm started to throb, threatening to at least temporarily ruin his plans for golf that day.

Instead of anger, all Roberts felt was pride. After all, Roberts and his training methods are ultimately responsible for Stamkos' surge in strength during the past four years.

Roberts In Charge

	from Dan Rosen of NHL.com,

Gary Roberts is standing below a life-size poster bearing his image as he peers over Steven Stamkos' left shoulder. In a matter of seconds the Tampa Bay Lightning's 60-goal scorer is in a dead sprint on the incline treadmill, the one that echoes throughout the workout facility created by Roberts to test the limits on players and provide them the tools for greatness.

Roberts, dressed head to toe in blue-and-black Nike apparel, watches Stamkos push his legs. He is running faster than he ever thought possible before he started training in Roberts' home gym four summers ago.

Roberts is eying Stamkos' speed and time. Lighting teammate Brett Connolly is on the other treadmill. Carolina Hurricanes center Jeff Skinner is waiting to go next. New York Rangers prospect Christian Thomas and St. Louis Blues prospect Anthony Peluso are wiping sweat off their foreheads, back into their hair as they gulp down water and try to recover from t...

Swindon v MK Dons preview

Swindon boss Paolo Di Canio may name an unchanged side for this fixture.

The Robins thrashed fellow league new boys Crawley 3-0 in midweek and the Italian may opt for the same starting XI.

Former skipper Paul Caddis is certain to miss out after his ongoing feud with his manager came to an end after the defender was told he could leave the club.

Midfielder Gary Roberts is yet to make an appearance this season since joining in the summer. He continues to struggle with a calf injury and will be assessed ahead of kick-off.

Fellow midfielder Alan Navarro and striker Paul Benson are both pushing for a recall but may have to settle for a place on the bench again.

Meanwhile, Alan Smith's midweek red card has added to MK Dons' problems ahead of another tricky away trip.

Smith became the third player in as many matches this term to be sent off for the Dons when he was given his marching orders against Bournemouth on Tuesday night.

The former England international departed after just 19 minutes with his t

Was Mike Gillis Wrong About Hodgson?

from John Vogl of the Buffalo News, Gary Roberts knows Cody Hodgson well. The retired 22-year veteran of the NHL has seen Hodgson try to train through a debilitating injury. Roberts has seen his young son take to Hodgson, and he watched the center respond by having daily lunches with the 4-year-old boy on Roberts’ patio. Roberts has seen the drive and desire Hodgson has to be a successful hockey player.

With all Roberts has seen, he couldn’t believe his ears.

While recapping the trade that made Hodgson a member of the Buffalo Sabres, Vancouver General Manager Mike Gillis essentially said last week he was glad to be rid of the center.

“I spent more time on Cody’s issues than every other player combined on our team the last three years,” Gillis said.

Roberts was flabbergasted.

“I listened to Mike Gillis the other day,” Roberts said by phone over the weekend, “and my impression was, ‘Are you kidding me?’

This Day In Hockey History (12/6)

WWGRD or What Would Gary Roberts Do was a popular saying by Pittsburgh fans but what made the guy amazing is that at every stop he endeared himself to that fan base. Give the guy credit, he left it all out there every night on every shift. Today's moment symbolized all of that hard work and it comes from just ten years ago in a game that happened yes, in New York, a place where this type of work ethic is appreciated immensely. Here is a video and then the moment as always....

December 06, 2001

Gary Roberts scored his 12th career hat trick to become the 6th player in NHL history to score 350 goals and amass 2,000 penalty minutes; the milestone came in the Maple Leafs 6-3 win over the Rangers at New York.
