Jeremy Roenick made it official, announcing his retirement as an NHL player after 20 years in the league. Roenick, choking up throughout his farewell speech on Thursday, leaves the game as one of four American who scored 500 or more goals. He scored 513 overall. Roenick also had 703 assists in 1,363 regular-season games with the Chicago Blackhawks, Phoenix Coyotes, Philadelphia Flyers, Los Angeles Kings and San Jose Sharks.

Jeremy Roenick was a presence on and off the ice. His stats show the impact he has made with U.S. born players: 3rd in goals with 495, 5th in assists with 675, and 3rd in points overall with 1175. He is a two time Olympian winning a silver medal with the late Herb Brooks, and a nine time all star. Roenick has made 16 playoff appearances in the 18 year career. The last playoff appearance with the Tampa Bay Lightning when the Lightning won the Stanley Cup. Even though he most likely made statements that he would want back, there is no question he brought passion to the game of hockey.

From Espn.com, Jeremy Roenick sent a text message to the Philadephia Inquirer with the news that he is indeed retiring. Falling just short of reaching 500 goals for a U.S. born player, he plans to spend more time with his wife and family; he may try broadcasting and acting.
