The Boston Bruins better think long and hard, without Marc Savard in their line up they are having a tough time scoring goals, frankly they are not very good and are very boring to watch. This past season the Bruins let Phil Kessel go to Toronto and this ill advised move will probably turn out to be a horrible transaction, because the Bruins can't score goals. Players with Marc Savard's talent and skill don't come around very often.

Time running out for Savard-Bruins pact

The agent for star center Marc Savard says contract talks continue with the Boston Bruins, but time is also becoming of the essence.

"We continue to discuss regularly," agent Larry Kelly told ESPN.com Monday night at the Hockey Hall of Fame. "Both sides are interested in getting something done. But obviously there are issues we are working through."

The longer it takes, the closer Savard gets to July 1, when he would become an unrestricted free agent. It's clear from what Kelly said that the clock is ticking. [ESPN]

The Bruins can cry into their beers all they want about missing Marc Savard and Milan Lucic. But the Wings were without Johan Franzen, Valtteri Filppula, Brian Rafalski, and Jonathan Ericsson tonight, and still managed to tuck two pucks behind Tim Thomas to claim the 2-0 win.

With Lucic already on LTIR with a broken finger that required surgery and Dennis Wideman currently nursing a sore shoulder that he could return from tonight, the Bruins are gonna have a long autumn. The Boston Bruins scoring leader Marc Savard will miss four to six weeks with a broken left foot. The team's announcement Wednesday did not say when Savard injured the foot. The forward has led the team in scoring each of the past three years. He did not miss a game last season, when he had 25 goals and 63 assists for 88 points. He has four goals and three assists this season. The team recalled 32-year-old forward Trent Whitfield from Providence.

More bad news for the Bruins.

When I first read this new clip I thought it was a joke, now the Bruins have Lucic and Savard on the long term injured reserve. Savard is the Boston Bruins best forward and it will be hard to the team fill the void left by Savard's injury. I am just hoping the Bruins can keep their record close to 500 until after the first of the year.

BOSTON, MA - Boston Bruins General Manager Peter Chiarelli announced today that the club has placed forward Marc Savard on long term injured reserve (broken left foot) and has recalled forward Trent Whitfield from Providence on an emergency basis.

Savard is expected to miss four to six weeks with the injury. He has led the Bruins in scoring each of the last three years and currently leads the team in scoring this year, with 4-3=7 totals in seven games. In 2008-09, Savard played in all 82 games with a 25-63=88 line.

THE GROWING LEGEND OF CROSBY V. SAVARD

Remember when Sidney Crosby was playing sans visor during the Bruins game on Sunday? Conspiracy theories have flown since then, but Puck Daddy gives Mark Madden credit for breaking the story wide open with his recent interview of Chris Kunitz, who said:

"I hear him and one of the other Boston players had some words after one of their goals, and then came back to the bench ... I didn't know whatever happened, if it was scratched or whatever. But I noticed the next shift he had it off and was letting the other player know he wasn't intimidated. I guess the guy made some kind of remark, and Sid went and took it off, and maybe challenged the guy a little. Obviously nothing had come about it, but obviously you see the heart and the grit that Sid has ..."

Madden filled in the rest of the blanks on his WXDX blog with his take of the incident:

Bruins center Marc Savard taunted Crosby after a Boston goal, and the taunting continued until both players neared their benches. Crosby challenged Savard to fight, and Savard responded: "Take off that [sissy] shield, and I'll be glad to."

So Crosby handed his helmet to equipment manager Dana Heinze and told him to remove the visor. Crosby took the ice for his next shift sans shield but Savard backed down, thereby looking like the [sissy] he accused Crosby of being.

Score one for Sid in the mind games department and cue a verbal beatdown for Savard, who took a brutal aural blistering from the Penguins bench throughout the rest of the afternoon (and no doubt lost a little respect in the eyes of his teammates when his bluff got called).

I think it's pretty obvious what was going on here, and it's not good for Savard. He ran his mouth and did not back it up, period. And now he's getting called on it. Add Savard's name to the rapidly-growing list of NHL players who feel the need to poke the lion that is Sidney Crosby. Maybe one day, guys like Savard, Ovechkin, Semin, etc., will learn their lesson, but don't hold your breath on that day happening anytime soon.
