West Virginia QB Brown will be game-day decision

Sporting News staff reports

West Virginia won't decide until Saturday whether starting quarterback Jarrett Brown will play against UConn, ESPN.com reports.
Brown suffered a concussion in the first quarter against Marshall last Saturday and didn't return to the game. True freshman Geno Smith came in for Brown and went 5-21 for 147 yards and a touchdown in the Mountaineers' 24-7 win.
Brown practiced with the first-team offense Tuesday and Wednesday without incident, though he will continue to be monitored the rest of the week, according to ESPN.com. Smith would start Saturday against the Huskies if Brown can't play.

WVU, Brown will bounce back against Buffs

Thursday night games in Morgantown, W.Va., are something special.
Jarrett Brown’s performance Sept. 19 against Auburn was anything but. Lucky for Brown, he has one of those night games to rebound … and rebound big. In West Virginia’s 41-30 loss at Auburn, Brown committed five turnovers and admittedly threw the game away for the Mountaineers. He [...]

Big East Notebook: Where QB Stands for Quality Basketball

by Brett McMurphyFiled under: Louisville, Pittsburgh, South Florida, Syracuse, Big EastBig East coaches continually are trying to fight the perception that their league is much more than a basketball league. "I guess everyone thinks we're a basketball league," West Virginia coach Bill Stewart said. "They're full of baloney." Perhaps, Stewart and his fellow football coaches should stop trying to fight that image. Especially since nearly half of the league's eight football teams feature starting quarterbacks that also played college basketball. The best known is former Duke point guard Greg Paulus, now starting for Syracuse. West Virginia senior quarterback Jarrett Brown played in 13 games two seasons ago for the Mountaineers' basketball team.Big East Notebook: Where QB Stands for Quality Basketball originally appeared on Fanhouse NCAA Football Blog on Thu, 24 Sep 2009 12:46:00 EST .
87,000 Game Balls: Auburn's Gene Chizik Thanks the Fans

Auburn head football coach Gene Chizik stepped to the podium in the press room underneath Jordan-Hare Stadium moments after his Tigers survived the West Virginia Mountaineers 41-30 on Saturday night.
"First of all," Chizik said, "I wish I had 87,000 game balls."
As Chizik uttered his wish, West Virginia quarterback Jarrett Brown wandered through the door looking for the Mountaineer locker room. He was intercepted by Auburn security guards, marking the fifth time Brown was intercepted on the night.
It's a joke, people.
Seriously, Chizik's comment was intended as tribute to the tens of thousands of Auburn fans who suffered through a four-inch deluge that soaked Jordan-Hare stadium; who endured an hour-long delay that set kickoff back to nearly 8 p.m.; who maintained a full-throated roar even when the Tigers fell behind early; and who chanted "It's great to be an Auburn Tiger" as the clock crept close to midnight.
"Our fans were a huge reason we won that game," Chizik continued. "I want them to know that. I know we had thousands of students who stayed here through that whole thing. Everybody came early, and nobody left because of the weather.
"I promise you that was one of the huge reasons we won the game when the momentum swings happened.
"It was because of our fans."
An evil-looking black and purple storm cloud boiled up as kickoff approached. Just moments before the scheduled start, the storm broke, unleashing lashing winds and torrential rains that turned Pat Dye field into a virtual lake.
Thousands of fans fled for shelter on the concourse. Thousands more remained in their seats, braving the soaking. Through the pounding water, you could hear occasional cheers as the remaining crowd entertained itself during the deluge.
Chizik spent much of the week prior to the West Virginia game stressing the importance and impact Auburn fans could have on the game. He called out to students, urging them to be there in support of the team.
As he and the Tigers waited impatiently in the locker room for the storm to pass, he must have wondered how many of those fans might have let the dismal weather deter them from attending or who might have abandoned the stands in light of the flood.
When he and his Tigers emerged from the tunnel amid fireworks and smoke, the roar of the crowd gave him his answer.
Auburn fans were there in full force. They did not disappoint.
Overcoming a shocking start and some early miscues, Chizik's Tigers repaid the favor. They sent a wet and weary Auburn crowd home happy.
As one bedraggled Auburn fan bellowed to no one in particular: "Oh, yeah. This was worth the wait."

West Virginia's Jarrett Brown Continues a Colorful History

When you look up the words character and loyalty in the dictionary, you should read the words, “See Jarrett Brown.”

Any college football fan worth his foam finger knows that Pat White was the most prolific running quarterback in college football history. You also know that White was the only starting quarterback to ever win four straight bowl games.

However, not everybody knows that waiting in the wings behind White was a young man who arguably could be the starting quarterback on most any of the programs in college football’s elite.

There are certainly not many young men in this country who would resist the urge to transfer, stay put and learn all they could, and patiently wait for their opportunity to start.

Jarrett Brown has certainly done his time and fully paid his dues.

And now that White has taken his talents to the Dolphins, Brown instantly became the big fish in Morgantown.

This past weekend against East Carolina, Brown completed 24-31 passes for 334-yards and four touchdowns. The senior quarterback also ran 10 times for 73 yards.

In was a Heisman-like performance by one of America’s formerly, best-kept secrets!

Despite the fact that I still worship the water that Pat White walks on, I must say that the West Virginia offense is clearly much better now than it was a year ago.

But please don’t misunderstand me. At this point in the season a year ago, West Virginia was a team in transition. Offensive coordinator, Jeff Mullen was still trying to fully implement a more balanced offense out of a largely, run-dominated scheme.

However, the game plan that Pat White employed to beat the Tar Heels in his final collegiate bowl game more closely resembled the offense run by West Virginia now, than did the one he ran at the beginning of his senior year.

It is an offense made for Jarrett Brown.

Although he is not as elusive as Pat, Brown is deceptively fast. He is faster than he appears and his long strides cover a lot of yards in a short time.

While using his speed to elude the rush, Brown is trying to buy time to pass the football. And in that way, you are instantly reminded of college football great, Major Harris.

Another similarity to Harris is Brown’s strength as a runner and the punishment he can inflict on anyone trying to tackle him. Brown possesses the size and strength that could turn White green with envy.

In two games this season, despite playing behind a relatively inexperienced offensive line, Brown has yet to be sacked. However, that is not because opposing players haven’t had their opportunities.

They have!

At 6’ 4” and 223-pounds, Brown is just so strong, that he throws them aside in much the same way that a dog shakes water from his coat.

Jarrett is not only buying time to throw; he is also buying time for his offensive line to mature and come together as a unit. Brown is also placing his weekly installments on a possible BCS berth.

In recent years, this West Virginia team has repeatedly lived or died on their ability to run the football. Now they can beat you with the pass. Moreover, with Brown under center and a great receiving corps at his disposal, opposing defensive backs must finally be able to cover the deep routes.

In order to thwart this latest version of the Mountaineers’ spread offense, the defense not only has to cover them from sideline-to-sideline; they must also cover West Virginia from goal line-to-goal line.

Brown, who patiently waited behind White, finally has earned a chance to show his true colors.

Next Saturday night, West Virginia takes on Auburn, in a nationally televised game on ESPN. It could prove to be a coming out party for Jarrett Brown.

It might also be the continuation of a colorful history for the Mountaineers.

Long wait is over for WVU's Brown

NEWPORT, R.I. | West Virginia was in the middle of spring practice when coach Bill Stewart ended one session with a simple gesture. He walked toward Jarrett Brown and wedged a football into the fifth-year senior's hands, leaving no doubt to the answer of the greatest uncertainty surrounding the Mountaineers' program. "It's my team," Brown said of the moment's significance. "It's officially my team." At long last. Of course, there was a reason Brown was the longtime backup - the presence of a man who galvanized a solid program into a national championship contender. That would be Pat White, the ...
