Storm Aftermath: Alexander Semin

When the Hurricanes signed Alexander Semin to a one-year deal, many fans weren't sure how to feel about it. On one hand, the Hurricanes filled a huge void in their top-six by adding one of the NHL's best goal-scorers and a player who has consistently produced at a first-line rate for most of his career. That alone should have been enough to get fans on board, but there were some red flags surrounding the Russian superstar. Despite being a legitimate first line player, he went until almost August without being signed and supposedly his "attitude" scared off a lot of teams from signing him.

Even Jim Rutherford himself stated that he was reluctant to sign a player like Semin to a long-term deal because "he has heard all of the stories about him." One has to assume he was referring to Semin's reputation as a "lazy" and "selfish" player, which has been a popular narrative among Washington's fanbase and the Canadian media for yea...

Canes' Semin to miss final 2 games

The Carolina Hurricanes say Alexander Semin is out with a concussion.

Coach Kirk Muller said Thursday that Semin will miss their final two games of the season, including the home finale against the New York Rangers.

Semin ends his season with 13 goals and 31 assists while establishing himself as a valuable component of the Hurricanes' top line. He was Carolina's marquee free-agent acquisition this offseason after coming over from division rival Washington.

He had a goal in the Hurricanes' 4-3 shootout win over the New York Islanders on Tuesday night, but was held out of practice Wednesday.

Carolina Hurricanes welcome Alexander Semin's return

Washington Capitals fans must chuckle at the concept: The free-falling Carolina Hurricanes are eager to get Alexander Semin back in the lineup.Semin missed the last two games with an upper body injury. Coach Kirk Muller hopes his return sparks some offense for a team reeling from 12 losses in its last 13 games, including the last five in a row.
As a Capital, Semin earned a reputation as a highly talented but lightly motivated player. Since coming to Carolina, though, Semin has excelled in all aspects of team play.
He has 36 points and a plus-12 rating in 36 games this season. “Up until this stretch, we pretty much competed with everyone in the East,” Muller told the Raleigh News and Observer. “When we had an all 20 healthy guys, we were competitive with a lot of teams.“For now, it's safe to say when you're missing some key guys, a lot of players are playing above their roles. It's a domino effect. In hockey, you maneuver and tweak your lineup . . . and a lot of guys are ...

Semin agrees to extension with Canes

Alexander Semin has agreed to a five-year contract extension with the Carolina Hurricanes.

The team announced Monday that Semin will make $7 million per year through the 2017-18 season.

Semin left Washington last summer and signed a one-year deal worth $7 million with the Hurricanes with the hope that a fresh start in Carolina would rejuvenate his career.

He has a team-best 22 assists and is second with 30 points while skating on the left wing on the Eric Staal-led top line for Carolina.

General manager Jim Rutherford calls Semin a ''major contributor'' to that No. 1 line.

Guest Column: Alexander Semin thriving in new environment

It's not too often I have a guest writer on here, but ESPN TrueHoop writer Michael Pina showed me an article he wrote on Alexander Semin and I thought it was worth posting on here. Semin has quickly established himself as a fan-favorite among Caniacs and it's nice to see that his strong play has been catching the national eye this year, too.

Whenever a professional athlete “just needs a change of scenery,” the line is usually a misleading twist of the narrative that actually means “whatever ugliness that’s going on isn’t Player X’s fault. He’s cool, it’s everyone else who’s messed up!”

In sports, this turn of phrase has firmly planted itself on the Mt. Rushmore of scapegoat targeting one-liners. It’s whispered all the time, by players, agents, coaches, owners, even fans. It’s the standard excuse maker, and almost always sums up a tricky situation by skimming over the meat and potatoes that explain what exactly is/was/will be wrong. More times than not whatever’s actu

So is Alexander Semin a team killer or what?

Alexander Semin's return to Washington D.C. Tuesday caused quite a stir.Semin was an enigmatic performer during his tenure with the the Washington Capitals, demonstrating world-class offensive ability and the magical ability to disappear for weeks on end.“Some nights you didn’t even know if he was gonna come to the rink,” Capitals forward Troy Brouwer observed during a radio interview this week. “It’s tough to play alongside guys like those because you don’t know what you’re gonna get out of ‘em.”So far Semin has been a solid citizen for the Carolina Hurricanes, who tethered him on the short leash of a one-year, $7 million contract. He has scored 14 points in his first 17 games.Should Semin play well all season, he could get a multi-year contract to stick in the NHL. If he vanishes again, his next stop will be the KHL – which is far more forgiving of intermittent effort.Semin plays with center Eric Staal on Carolina’s top line.
Did Carolina Hurricanes Quietly Steal Alexander Semin?

The Carolina Hurricanes signed Alexander Semin to a one year deal worth $7 million, causing many people to wonder whether or not it was a good signing by the ‘Canes. Semin sat around for much longer than expected on the free agency market, and could not secure a better offer from any other team, and he actually considered accepting a two year offer from a Russian hockey team.
But in came the Hurricanes and gave Semin a big pay day, albeit just for one season. But for a team who already traded for Jordan Staal, the Hurricanes are proving that they are serious about making a push to get back to the playoffs next season.
Critics will be quick to point out that Semin’s stats have dipped over the past few seasons with the Washington Capitals. While that may be true, he was still one of the top five offensive free agents on the market this offseason. While $7 million is a lot for one season in the NHL, it is only for one season, limiting the risk to that of a minimal one for Carolin...

Alexander Semin and Tomas Vokoun are reportedly following Dale Hunter out the door. Semin and Vokoun will not return to the Washington Capitals next season, according to separate reports, which means more changes for the team that saw its head coach step down on Monday. Semin's agent told ESPN.com that his client has no intentions of signing a contract extension with the Caps, and that he will therefore become an unrestricted free agent on July 1. "It was good while it lasted. With the lack of playoff success, with the direction they are going. They decided to change directions. That's...

Dale Hunter will not return, options to replace the Capitals head coach

After the Capitals fell in a Game 7 to the top seeded Rangers on Saturday night, the mood of the fan base in DC was a familiar one. Yet again their beloved Capitals came up short in a Game 7 in a series they could have won and once again the core of Alex Ovechkin, Nicklas Backstrom, and Alex Semin could not bring a Stanley Cup to the Nation’s Capital. But, unlike in past years, there was a feeling of optimism about the loss. Despite a subpar performance in Game 7, the Capitals for once did not exit in embarrassing style. In fact, if not for a missed coverage in triple overtime and a poor penalty in Game 5, there is a chance the Capitals are still dancing. They played inspired hockey and seemed to gel and buy into a system that can get it done in the post season. That optimism vanished this afternoon though, as the man who got the team to play that style and who was suppose to perfect the system next year, Dale Hunter, stepped down as Head Coach of the Washington Capitals.

Alexander Semin Headed to the KHL

Alexander Semin, once a top NHL sniper, may play his final National Hockey League game this season.
According to Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun, Semin will likely be headed to the Kontinental Hockey League, Russia’s equivalent to the NHL following the 2011-2012 campaign.
From Garrioch:
Since W Alexander Semin won’t be back with the Capitals next season — and nobody was willing to deal for him at the trade deadline — expect him to play in the KHL. A UFA making $6.7 million, Semin isn’t going to get those kinds of offers to play in the NHL
Many believed that Semin would bolt for Russia following last season, but he elected to remain with the Capitals while signing a very lucrative contract.
In 64 games this season, Semin has 18 goals and 25 assists to go along with a plus-eight rating. That’s well below his 28 goals, 54 points and plus-22 rating in 65 games last season.
