If you want me to recap hockey games that are broadcast on Versus than I'm going to need you to speak with the feminine hygiene products at Comcast.Penguins 5 St. Louis 1I did not get to watch Evgeni Malkin's 12 shots against the Blues because I have DirecTV. I didn't enjoy the domination of the first period where the Pens outshot St. Louis 20-3. It was frustrating. I got to see a couple of live look-ins courtesy of the NHL Network but that wasn't enough to satisfy my needs. I...

Pre-Game Notes (Pittsburgh VS NJ)

The Penguins held an optional skate this morning and they had a pretty good turn-out taking into consideration the back-to-back games and it going into a shoot-out last night. Those who took part were Tyler Kennedy, Jordan STaal, Eric Godard, Pascal Dupuis, Chris Bourque, Mike Rupp, Martin Skoula, Jay McKee, Kris Letang, Alex Goligoski, Sergei Gonchar, Marc-Andre Fleury, and Brent Johnson.Gonchar, in a red "no-contact" jersey, was actually on the ice for this morning's skate whi...

Pittsburgh signs D Martin Skoula; Waive 4

Veteran defenseman Martin Skoula, formerly of the Minnesota Wild, has signed a one year contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins. Skoula, 29, was cut from both the Florida Panthers and the Columbus Blue Jackets training camp rosters before landing a contract with Pittsburgh. I'm not really in favor of this move, because this puts Deryk Engelland and Nate Guenin, both of whom are NHL capable, back in the AHL. Not to mention Ben Lovejoy, who is currently injured. This leaves the Penguins w...

New York Islanders: Potential Remaining Free Agent Targets, Part Two

Yesterday, we took a look at potential forwards that Garth Snow could still be targeting on the free agent market.
Today, we will take a look at some remaining defenseman that the Isles could have some interest in.
Three of the Isles current top six defenseman missed a significant amount of time last year. Radek Martinek only played in 51 games, Freddy Meyer only played in 21 games, and Andy Sutton only appeared in 23 games.
Meyer still has much to prove in the NHL, and Sutton and...

The last few seasons were the glory days for Minnesota Wild bloggers. There were multiple topics we could opine on, make fun of and ridicule the squad about. Shoddy defense? I’d write a long post about the odd-man rushes caused by the inept Martin Skoula. Questionable line switching by the head coach? Thank you, Jacques, I think I will savage you in another blog. No big talent added at the trading deadline? I can’t thank Doug Risebrough enough for all of the material he’s given me over the la...

Guess Who's Next?

With today’s announcement that Jacques Lemaire is going to coach the New Jersey Devils, one only has to wonder how long it’ll be before Lemaire-favorite Martin Skoula signs with Jersey. Martin is solely responsible for (a) causing a record number of odd-man rushes last season and (b) my dramatic increase in beer consumption while watching Wild games. But despite this he remained a favorite of the old man. Maybe he saw something in him 18,602 of us didn’t. Anyhow, I actually do think Lemaire’...

Im not the only one that thinks Skoula is a Pylon.

While reading the HockeyWilderness I came across this most accurate description of Martin Skoula and Marc-Andre Bergeron. The two Players (Pylons) are defensive zone nightmares, and I would hate to think on how many times Skoula coughed the puck up that lead to a goal in the defensive zone. I think the Wild should also ban anyone else from ever wearing the number 41 again.
On defense, Fletcher jettisoned the human pylon Martin Skoula, the only man more entertaining, in that painful kind of way, than the Three Stooges. Gone also is Marc-Andre Bergeron, who played minutes only when there was little or no chance of him screwing anything up. In their places are Greg Zannon and Shane Hnidy. Tow defensive minded d-men. They were needed to be able to unleash the talents of Brent Burns, Kim Johnnson, and hopefully, Marek Zidlicky. Bringing in two guys that have shown they have a nose for keeping the puck out of the net allows the guys who have a nose for putting the puck in the net to do so.
 [HockeyWilderness.com]

Wild 2009 Pre-Draft rumors, let the fun and speculation begin!

Before the blur that is the NHL draft, the rumor mills crank up with talk of trades as teams try to acquire more picks or key players before the opening of free agency on July 1st. Like any rumors, most are unfounded speculation and few of these 'stories' actually materialize into reality. Trades on draft day can be as much a story as the draft selections themselves. One such trade was made a few seasons ago by the Wild when it traded its 1st round pick (the 2nd one it had in the 2...

Top line forward: Someone in like Olli Jokinen.
2.) Second line forward: Someone along the lines of a player like Jason Blake.
3.) Another second or third line forward: Or maybe a rent-a-player like Keith Tkachuk. Simply:
The Wild are in dire need of offense and anything would be an improvement.

Who?s Available:

1.) Martin Skoula: This team has an over abundance on defense.
2.) Kim Johnsson: See above.
3.) Marian Gaborik: Wild can?t resign him so the team needs to get whatever they can for Gabby.
