Veteran defenseman Martin Skoula, formerly of the Minnesota Wild, has signed a one year contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins. From the Penguins: The Pittsburgh Penguins have signed defenseman Martin Skoula to a one-year contract, it was announced by Executive Vice President and General Manager Ray Shero. Financial terms were not disclosed. Skoula adds nine years of NHL experience, including a Stanley Cup championship in 2001 with Colorado, to the Penguins’ roster. via Steve Gorten of the Sun-Sentinel, The Panthers have extended training camp invitations to a pair of NHL veteran defensemen Martin Skoula and Christian Backman. Both are former first-round draft picks. The Panthers haven’t signed either player, but both will fly with the team Saturday to Nova Scotia for the start of training camp Sunday in Port Hawkesbury, and will have a chance to earn a contract.

With today’s announcement that Jacques Lemaire is going to coach the New Jersey Devils, one only has to wonder how long it’ll be before Lemaire-favorite Martin Skoula signs with Jersey. Martin is solely responsible for (a) causing a record number of odd-man rushes last season and (b) my dramatic increase in beer consumption while watching Wild games. While reading the HockeyWilderness I came across this most accurate description of Martin Skoula and Marc-Andre Bergeron. The two Players (Pylons) are defensive zone nightmares, and I would hate to think on how many times Skoula coughed the puck up that lead to a goal in the defensive zone. I think the Wild should also ban anyone else from ever wearing the number 41 again.
On defense, Fletcher jettisoned the human pylon Martin Skoula, the only man more entertaining, in that painful kind of way, than the Three Stooges. Gone also is Marc-Andre Bergeron, who played minutes only when there was little or no chance of him screwing anything up. In their places are Greg Zannon and Shane Hnidy. Tow defensive minded d-men. They were needed to be able to unleash the talents of Brent Burns, Kim Johnnson, and hopefully, Marek Zidlicky. Bringing in two guys that have shown they have a nose for keeping the puck out of the net allows the guys who have a nose for putting the puck in the net to do so.
