Monday debate: the blame game

With the Canes 5-16-5 and last in the NHL, there's more than enough blame to go around.

General manager Jim Rutherford says to blame him for his offseason decisions. Coach Paul Maurice has said he must accept responsibility for the team's performance. The players are the ones on the ice and have said they need to play harder, play smarter, be tougher.

Certainly injuries, notably to Eric Staal and Cam Ward, have hurt this season. But no one expected this.

Question: where shoul...

Staal regains confidence in first game back

From a physical standpoint, Eric Staal had no complaints about his first game back.

After sitting out 10 games with an injury to his abdominal area, the Canes center returned Wednesday against the Anaheim Ducks and had 16:50 in ice time in the 3-2 loss.

"It felt great to be back on the ice in a game situation," Staal said today. "I felt fresh, I felt pretty good. I got more confident as the game went on.

"That was the biggest thing, just to get that confidence back ...

No. 12 is back. At least, back on the ice with the Canes.

Eric Staal is taking part in today's morning skate at the RBC Center but does not appear fully ready to rejoin the lineup. Canes coach Paul Maurice has said the center is expected back next week.

But Staal, who has been sidelined with an upper-body injury, has been skating on his own. He has been working with trainer Pete Friesen in the weight room.

Today, he did a little wing work on Brandon Sutter's line. He got in s...

Canes center Eric Staal will miss some games because of an upper-body injury suffered Sunday against the San Jose Sharks, general manager Jim Rutherford said today.

Staal has played in 349 consecutive regular-season games, but that streak will end, Rutherford said. He has missed just one game in his career, late in his rookie season.

Staal left after the second period of the 5-1 loss to San Jose as the Canes dropped their ninth straight game to fall to 2-8-3.

Center Eric Staal was held out of practice Friday for the second straight day but his consecutive-game streak of 342 regular-season games isn't in jeopardy.

Staal has been hampered the past week or so by some lower-body muscle tightness. He had 22:22 in ice time Wednesday against the Penguins and will be in the lineup Saturday night in New Jersey against the Devils.

BOSTON -- Forgive Eric Staal if he's a little tired today. The Canes center did have 26:39 of ice time Friday in the opener against the Flyers.

The breakdown: 13:35 at even strength, 10:27 on the power play, 2:37 short-handed. Staal logged more ice than in any regular-season game last year -- his high was 26:16 against Detroit in the third game.
