USA Defeats Russia 8-3 In WC Quarter-Final Game

from Risto Pakarinen at IIHF.com,

Craig Smith had five assists, while team captain Paul Stastny scored two and added two assists, and John Gibson made 31 saves for the Americans. The 19-year-old, who led the U.S. to World Junior gold in January, came to Helsinki with only one professional game (for the AHL’s Norfolk Admirals) under his belt.

Alexander Ovechkin, who arrived yesterday, scored one and added an assist for Russia. He was selected as best player for his team.

"The team that was more disciplined and better organized won today. We have very good players, but you have to remember that hockey is a team game," Russia's coach Zinetula Bilyaletdinov said.

"We are where we wanted to be coming into this tournament," said the USA's Stephen Gionta. "We took care of what we had to to, and we got some bounces our way, which is always nice."

Colorado Avalanche should trade Paul Stastny

After sinking to the bottom of the Western Conference this season, the Colorado Avalanche franchise appears headed for big changes. One obvious option this summer is moving forward Paul Stastny, who has one year and $6.6 million left on his contract. Cashiering Stastny would allow the team to extend the contract of its true No. 1 center, Matt Duchene – who has one year and $3.75 million left on his deal. The Denver Post suggests a five-year deal for $30 million to $35 million could make that happen. That sounds fair, given similar signings elsewhere in the league. The team does not want to travel down the road it did with Ryan O’Reilly, who eventually got an offer sheet from the Calgary Flames. That hostile bid, matched by Colorado, earned O’Reilly a $2.5 million signing bonus for this shortened season and a $6.5 million salary for next season. He is another player the Avalanche needs to lock in before visiting free agency. To afford that, the team should offload the disappointing Stast...

Blackhawks' streak comes to an end

Matt Duchene, Paul Stastny and the Colorado Avalanche ended the Chicago Blackhawks’ 24-game points streak. Image Credit: Jacquelyn Martin, AP After 24 games, the Chicago Blackhawks’ record of consecutive games to start a season without a regulation loss has come to an end. After starting the 2013 season 21-0-3, the Blackhawks were defeated by the Colorado Avalanche by a score of 6-2. Chicago took an early lead on a goal from captain Jonathan Toews 5:44 into the game. They held that lead for most of the first period, but Colorado tied it with under four minutes to go on a power-play goal from Paul Stastny. Colorado broke the tie and took the lead for good with a blistering four-goal second period. The Avalanche got two goals in the first five minutes of the second period, as Matt Duchene, who would finish with a team-leading four points (one goal, three assists), notched his ninth of the year at the 4:16 mark. Teammate John Mitchell added his eighth tally of the year 33 seconds later to give the Avs a 3-1

NHL referee drops after he's hit in head by puck

Only three minutes into the Dallas Stars-Colorado Avalanche game on Monday night, this scary moment happened. Dallas defenseman Jamie Oleksiak took a slapshot and it was deflected by Colorado forward Paul Stastny’s skate. Referee Chris Rooney never saw the puck coming and didn’t even have a chance to react to the puck headed straight for his head. The A.P. reported:The puck appeared to carom off the neck of Rooney, who stayed down behind the Avalanche net. Rooney eventually got up and skated off the ice.Sam Singleton, an NHL security representative, said Rooney ”checked out OK,” but he didn’t have any details. The Avalanche had no additional update.Rooney has been a member of the NHL Officials Association since 1996. This incident left referee Justin St. Pierre as the only referee, who finished the game with two linesman.Strangely enough this wasn’t the only incident on Monday night where a referee was struck by a puck. According to the Associated Press:Referee Marc Joannette was...

NHL ref struck by puck, helped off ice

NHL referee Chris Rooney was helped off the ice after being hit by a puck after a shot by Dallas Stars defenseman Jamie Oleksiak deflected off the skate of Colorado Avalanche forward Paul Stastny on Monday night.

The puck appeared to carom off the head of Rooney, who stayed down for quite some time behind the Avalanche net. A stretcher was brought out, but Rooney slowly got up and was assisted off the ice.

Rooney was hit just 3 minutes into the game and with the Stars leading 1-0. There was no immediate update on his injury.

With Rooney gone, the lone referee was Justin St. Pierre, along with two linesmen.

Aaron Musick: The trade I'd put Stastny in

The hot topic on the hockeysphere today is whether or not the Colorado Avalanche are trying to trade Paul Stastny.

To Buffalo for Vanek, to the Leafs for who knows what and to the Ducks for Bobby Ryan are the three popular schools of thought.

However, there is one problem with trading Stastny: his name is Ryan O'Reilly. O'Reilly is coming off a great season in which he scored 18 goals and pu...

GARTH: Stastny On The Market?

I have a ton of respect for Denver Post hockey head, Adrian Dater.

Adrian's latest blog post asks the question: Should the Avs give up on at-times brilliant centreman, Paul Stastny?

The Avs fan base must feel about Stastny how some Sabres fans feel about Thomas Vanek. Streaky. Long stretches of brilliance interrupted by weeks of silence.

Dater doesn't think the Avs will be tradin...

Paul Stastny: Avalanche Mainstay or Trade Bait?

Paul Stastny certainly has many ties to the city of Denver and the franchise for whom he plays. His father is Peter Stastny, a Hall-of-Famer for the Quebec Nordiques and the mentor to a young Joe Sakic. Paul played his collegiate hockey right here in Denver for the University of Denver Pioneers and helped them capture an NCAA Championship in 2005.
The second-round pick of the Avalanche turned pro after two years at DU and went straight to the NHL without a stint in the AHL.
Stastny had a great rookie year, scoring an Avalanche rookie record 78 points in 82 games and broke the NHL's all time rookie scoring streak with 20 games, surpassing future Hall-of-Famer Teemu Selanne's previous mark of 17 games.
He finished second in the voting for the Calder Trophy to Evgeni Malkin, who can be argued is the best player in the world today.
His second NHL season was also a success as he got 71 points in 66 games and was named to his first NHL All-Star Game, although he was unable...
