A change in net is needed for the Avs

Avalanche coach Joel Quenneville has a decision to make before game 3 back in Colorado. He must decide whether to start Jose Theodore who has let in 4 goals in each of the first two games or put Peter Budaj in net, the goalie that replaced Theodore in both games and has only given up one goal on 40 shots. I think Quenneville needs to take a lesson from Red Wing coach Mike Babcock when he sat 6 time Vezina Trophy winner Dominik Hasek for the 3rd lowest paid goaltender in the league in Chris Osgood in the first round. Sure I agree with Quenneville in saying that Theodore was a big reason they are where they are but if they want to have any chance at getting past the powerful Wings a change in net is a must. If Babcock has the guts to sit a future Hall of Famer Quenneville has to have the balls to sit Theodore who has been very average in his time with the Avs. Only this season has he begin to return to some of the form he had when he won his only Vezina and I think the only reason for that is because Jose is playing for a contract for next season.

Avalanche all banged up

The Colorado Avalanche players are falling faster than an Avalanche. First Peter Forsberg re-injured his groin during Thursday's morning skate and was unable to play that night. It looks as though he will be out of game 2 as well as he is listed as questionable. Next on the list is Wojtek Wolski, he had to leave game 1 after a collision with Detroit center Johan Franzen and may not be able to return at all in this series due to an upper body injury. Lastly it looks like the flu bug that hit goalie Jose Theodore before game one is gone as he was back practicing with the team Friday. Theodore was sick enough to leave game one after he was pulled and head straight to the team's hotel to get some much needed rest. As for Detroit they get a player back for today's game, Brad Stuart will be back on the blue line after he missed the first game because he flew back to San Jose to be with his wife and newly born son.

Avalanche Take Series

Stopping 34 of 35 shots, Jose Theodore stunned the Minnesota Wild for the third straight game. Even the return of defenseman Nick Schultz wasn't enough to spur on Minnesota. Theodore was easily the series MVP, and the Avs look to the next round and are the first team in the West to advance.

I don't have much else to say. I'm kind of bummed out.

Avs Take Game 5, Look For Series Win Saturday

Jose Theodore stopped 38 of 40 Thursday night to lead the Colorado Avalanche to another 3-2 victory over the Minnesota Wild, this time in regulation. Theodore, who has been sharp all series, stood on his head tonight as an onslaught by the Wild was denied by the feisty net minder, maybe someone is making a point that he wants to stay in Colorado (or maybe he'd settle for a Conn Smythe and split). Both teams played excellent tonight, and it was a lot less chippy than I thought it was going to be. The eventual game-winner was scored by Paul Stastny in the third period.

Odds are in favor of the Avs taking the series, as over 80% of teams who win game 5 go on to take the series, but that shouldn't slow down Minnesota. Game 5 will be Saturday in Denver at 10et/9ct.

Avs Win, Wild Post 119 Penalty Minutes

This game was plagued by terrible calls that kept the players from actually playing the game. I'll give the Avs and Jose Theodore props for playing through bad calls, but it just didn't seem like it was a fair match the whole way through. Sure, the Avs got their share of bad calls, but it was getting ridiculous. The Minnesota Wild managed to rack up an absurd 119 penalty minutes, including two 10 minute misconducts for Derek Boogaard. At least 40 minutes of the 119 were terrible calls, and I really hate it when refs do this. Making calls is one thing, but they were calling things on both sides that couldn't even be considered penalties. The Avalanche tallied 43 as well, which is no small feat in itself.

In the end, there isn't much that can be done now. These refs won't be officiating a Wild game any time soon. Jose Theodore was easily the player of the game. Not much more to write on the subject. That game just left a bad taste in my mouth. Hopefully Thursday's game will be more like the first three.

Wild Take 2-1 Series Lead With OT Win

And with a 3-2 win in OT... Ringing any bells, people? This was the third game in a row with the same result, and each has been as thrilling as the last. Wild forward Pierre-Marc Bouchard bangs one home 11:58 into the first overtime with a beautiful pass from Brian Rolston. Overtime was dominated by the Wild, who made the Avs look like they were boys among men. Goaltenders were the key for both teams again tonight. Jose Theodore and Niklas Backstrom seemed to be standing on their heads at times, especially Theodore in the third and OT. The calls were fair and evenly dispersed this evening, so I have no complaints in that department. Great play from both teams. This is what the playoffs is all about.

Game 4 is tomorrow at 10et/9ct in Denver and it looks to build off of an already amazing series. PS to ESPN.com, nice recap, guys. Also, Pierre-Marc Bouchard apparently isn't in Yardbarker's database for tagging. That made me a little sad.

Theodore needs Avs to go Deep in Playoffs

Jose Theodore is one of only three goalies to win the Vezina Trophy and the Hart Trophy in the same year, the others being Dominik Hasek and Jacques Plante. But for Theodore his magnificent season of '01-'02 was followed up by a couple of sub par years and was then traded from Montreal to Colorado in March '06. His play continued to slid even after the change of scenery and in the middle of last season he lost his starting job. This is what happens when some players sign big contracts, they stop working as hard. Theodore is a prime candidate for this, after he was the leagues best goalie he didn't put the effort in to sustain that title and his play was affected. This year however, Jose is working hard on and off the ice and it has show in the box scores. His GAA is below 3.00 and his save% is over .900 for the first time since '04. The Avalanche are hoping his hard work pays off in the playoffs, if not look to see Theodore in another jersey come next fall as he is an unrestricted free agent after the year.
