Injured Buffalo Sabres forward Thomas Vanek may not be out as long as originally expected, and could miss only a few days rather than weeks of the NHL season. After scoring two goals against the Red Wings last night and looking the best he has all year, Vanek was checked by Brad May before burying his 2nd biscuit of the night and will now apparently be lost for weeks. Sabres forward Thomas Vanek will be out for what coach Lindy Ruff termed as "weeks" after sustaining an upper body injury in a 6-2 win over the Detroit Red Wings. Without providing the exact nature of the injury, Ruff said following the game Tuesday that Vanek will "miss some time," before adding that it's going to be weeks and not days. Vanek did not return after scoring his second goal of the game against Detroit at the 12:46 mark of the second period.

What do the actions of Kevin Lowe in attempting to sign Thomas Vanek have for the rest of the NHL and its crop of Restricted Free Agents? Lowe is so desperate to improve his hockey team, he seems prepared to mortgage the team's future for short term success. Thomas Vanek is a great young hockey player that had 43 goals and 41 assists, but his deal of $50 million over seven years could cause problems for the other GMs who have their own Restricted Free Agents to sign as well as those other GMs who might attempt the same thing Lowe did. Ottawa Senators goaltender is taking his cash strapped team to arbitration. Will Lowe's actions cause inflation for the other teams?
