Hot Rod Hundley To Hang It Up

When Dave Fox at KUTV in Salt Lake City heard about Hot Rod Hundley retiring at the end of this season, he did what the rest of us would- but he did it first. It's better than some cut-and-paste job from wire copy any day.

"He is the last original member of the Jazz, and the the only radio Broadcaster they have ever had. After 35 years, Hots is done. 42 years in all as a broadcaster!

Here is what the the man himself said in a Jazz release:

“Retiring was a tough decision for me to make,” said Hundley ((pictured, thanks nba.com)). “But after 42 seasons of broadcasting, countless miles on the road, hotel rooms and airplanes, I have decided that spending quality time with my daughters and grandchildren is what I want to do. I am grateful to Larry and Gail Miller for their support over the years and have nothing but fond memories of my time with the Jazz organization. I would also like to thank all of the fans in Salt Lake City and throughout the great state of Utah for all of your support over the years. It has truly meant the world to me.”

Pitty the man who has to follow this legend. Hots was loved by the fans and respected by peers. How else can you last so long in this business!! He has called over 3000 games! Jazz fans may not even know this, but Hots actually started as a Phoenix Suns brodacaster and also worked 2 years with the Lakers with the late Chick Hearn. Long time Laker fan Jack Nicholsen still talks to Hots before every game when the Jazz are in LA. Hots had a HUGE following! He will be missed!

What he said...
Here's a story from ABC4 in black...
He talked about his career just after he cleared his 3,000th broadcast earlier this season with Andre Aldridge, Steve Smith, and Cheryl Miller at NBA TV
Embedded video from NBA Video

Effing Mike Tirico

So I didn't even watch the game. I just kept up with Clapp's live blog.....Ok not really I'm studying for finals. I had a fantasy rooting interest on the Panther's last drive (I needed Steve Smith to snare 3 points; didn't happen). I saw enough of the game to hear Tirico say, "This is nitpicky, ...

Phils Add Perlozzo

Sometimes the offseason isn't only about replacing what's on the field, but also who replacing the coaches who get the players fired up day in and day out. With third base coach Steve Smith's termination, and bench coach Jimy Williams choosing not to return to Philadelphia, the Phillies have some coaching vacancies to fill. They filled one of those positions yesterday when they hired Sam Perlozzo as a coach.

It's still unknown whether Perlozzo will be at third base or on the bench. That depends on who the second coach the front office brings in.

Perlozzo spent last season as the third base coach of the Seattle Mariners, but prior to that was the bench coach then manager of the Baltimore Orioles. He comes to the Phillies with 20 years experience as a Major League coach or manager.

The one role he will have is as infield coach. Perlozzo was an outstanding defensive second baseman in both the minor leagues and Japan. His knowledge will be an asset of an already stellar Phillies infield.

It's unknown who will be the second coach that will be brought in (and ultimately decide Perlozzo's role), but names being rumored are Jim Tracy, Grady Little, and former Phillie, Juan Samuel.

Here's A List Of Steve Smiths That It's OK For You To F**k With

I'm not sure why people keep taking on Carolina Panther Steve Smith. Whether he's dropping dudes in the film room or letting rookies know where they stand, he already seemed pretty bad ass and now he's sending teammates who cross him off the field on a cart. He's clearly the top dog on the Steve Smith heap. So just for you gluttons for abuse, I've compiled a list of other Steve Smiths that would make for better and more importantly, much less dangerous fodder.

Julius Erving on the Art of Knowing When to Dunk--And When Not to Dunk

Although Julius "Dr. J" Erving is one of the most flamboyant and exciting basketball players ever, his game was very fundamentally sound. As he often put it, he dunked primarily for the "result, not the effect"; for Erving, the dunk was the highest percentage shot available. On page 120 of the excellent book Stuff Good Players Should Know, Dick DeVenzio wrote (emphasis in the original):

It may surprise you to learn that good players don't strive for great plays. Great plays come to them occasionally, but only in the process of concentrating on their job, trying to do all the little things right. Take Dr. J for example. He makes a lot of great plays. But his value, even more important to his team than all those spectacular dunks, is that he doesn't miss many dunks. He is consistent. On the plays where a spectacular dunk has a good chance of missing, Dr. J "happens" not to try it at all. "Ah," say the fans, "he should've dunked that one." But he doesn't dunk every chance he gets. He dunks the ones he can dunk, and he doesn't attempt the ones he can not. If it's 50-50, he doesn't try it. Good players don't like those odds. Good players are not gamblers, they are performers. That is why great plays are not what makes an outstanding player. It is knowing limitations. A good player knows that he doesn't need a slam dunk in the final seconds to be credited with winning the big game. If he can stop his man from scoring and go down the other end and get a good shot, he can win the game just as well--and more often.

When I interviewed Erving a few years ago, I told him about that passage and asked him what he thought about it. Here is his reply:

Erving: "My thoughts are, if you haven't perfected it, then you shouldn't be trying it in a game. Good defense forces an offensive player to maybe go outside of their capability a little bit and experiment, but a one-on-none breakaway, trying to do a blindfold or go between the legs

Over the summer, the battle between the NFL Players Association and the retired players reached a fever pitch. This battle is not some abstract amorphous debate to those who laid their bodies on the line to make the NFL the money printing machine that it is. Steve Smith is one of those retired players who faces the reality of the NFL's lack of health care for its retirees every day...

Man vs. Poorly Drafted Team: The Draft

"ArmchairAssociation selected Steve Smith"
"Vicks Dog Fluffy: haha"

So, this is how it feels to draft like an idiot... I wound up with the 8th overall pick, and immediately drafted Steve Smith. Less than 2 seconds later, the manager with the wit, nay THE BRILLIANCE, to become the one-billionth fantasy team with a Vick reference in their name, rips on my pick. Awesome! I like where this is going...

Man, drafting an intentionally bad team is harder than it seems. I'm not saying that I'm so astoundingly good that failing is difficult or anything. It's just hard to look at a good name still on the board and make yourself take someone else.

Here's a breakdown of Team: ArmAss -
