The league announced Thursday afternoon that Devils defenseman Anton Volchenkov has been suspended four games for his elbow to the head of Brad Marchand on Wednesday night. “Although Marchand, who stands 5-9, is stopping and turning his head away from Volchenkov to avoid the full force of the impending check, that doesn’t contribute or explain the reckless elbow contact to the head on what could have been a legal collision,” NHL director of player safety Brendan Shanahan said in a video explaining the hit. Volchenkov is in a tough spot here because of Marchand’s size difference.  It’s easy for him to hit Marchand in the head because he is so small, but my guess is Volchenkov will be suspended because he leads with his elbow and chooses not to play the puck on the play.  Volchenkov is also a repeat offender, being suspended for a headshot on Zach Boychuk, which will not help his cause. However, it’s still clear that supplemental discipline doesn’t always lead to improved behavior and etiquette on the ice. The latest example of that came Wednesday in New Jersey. Late in the second period of the Bruins’ 5-4 win over the Devils, Boston forward Brad Marchand was caught with an elbow from Anton Volchenkov. The hit, which seemed to focus on Marchand’s head as the principle point of contact, left Marchand on the ice for a few moments. He had to be helped off the ice and went down the tunnel to the dressing room. He did not return to the game. See the hit below. It was a scary hit and it served as a reminder of how dangerous hits to the head can be. The Bruins are no strangers to that. Seriously, there is no defending this hit. I don’t care what you think of Brad Marchand, this is not acceptable. These are the types of hits we’re trying to illuminate from all levels of hockey. The hit left Marchand a little woozy, and the Bruins forward eventually fell to the ice in apparent pain. He was helped off the ice and immediately went down the tunnel to the Boston dressing room.
