Legace joins old friends, new teammates

They were once teammates on the Detroit Red Wings -- Manny Legace, Aaron Ward and Ray Whitney. Now they've been reunited again with the Hurricanes.

Legace and Ward have known each other since their days in junior hockey in Canada. Whitney has been both teammate and pesky foe. And Legace, with a laugh, said he has known the Canes' Scott Walker "since he was a defenseman."

A crisis situation has put them in the same room again: Cam Ward's leg laceration that will s...

Brind'Amour to start on wing for a change

DENVER — Hurricanes coach Paul Maurice tried it during the game against the New York Islanders, liked what he saw, and will go with it again tonight against the Colorado Avalanche: Rod Brind'Amour on the wing.

Brind'Amour will play the left wing on Matt Cullen's line, with Scott Walker on the right side. Maurice also will open with Chad LaRose and Ray Whitney on Eric Staal's line, and Jussi Jokinen centering Tuomo Ruutu and Sergei Samsonov. The fourth line is unchanged....

Winless Islanders have Maurice edgy

The Hurricanes are leaving today for a three-game road trip, with the first game Wednesday against the winless New York Islanders (0-3-3).

Which, in turn, makes Canes coach Paul Maurice more than a little edgy.

"Especially when you go back and watch the games that they've played," he said today. "They've worked their butts off and they have some high-end young talent there."

That includes forward John Tavares, the No. 1 overall pick in this year's NHL...

Jamie Langenbrunner scored 26 seconds into the third period to give New Jersey the lead and Martin Brodeur picked up his 102nd career shutout as the Devils stopped the Carolina Hurricanes 2-0 Saturday night at the Prudential Center in Newark.

Langenbrunner scored when Rob Niedermayer passed from behind the goal and the pounding puck hit Langenbrunner around the helmet and bounced past Cam Ward. Zach Parise added an empty-netter with 39 seconds to play as the Devils won their first home gam...

Along for the ride

Scott Walker put it best. It was a heck of a ride.

From the opening night win over Florida to the 4-1 loss to Pittsburgh in the fourth and final game of the Eastern Conference finals, it was a long and often tiring and mostly rewarding ride for the Carolina Hurricanes. And, for an N&O rookie who was along for a lot of the ride.

What to the remember? Games are games and there were a lot of them. But it's all about the guys in the room and the men who coached them.

Let's g...

Now THAT Is How You Have Some Game 7s!!!

The NHL disappointed on Wednesday night. With the evening all too itself, the Washington Ovechkins and Pittsburgh Crosbys had their sudden-death duel to see who moves on and whose season ends. We all knew that it was going to be great theatre.

Until the Pens went up 5-0 before closing out the game 6-2.

That sucks. But all we had to do was wait one more night to get that satisfaction. The Red Wings beat the Anaheim Ducks in a Game 7 when a goal was scored with just over 3 minutes remaining. The Ducks had just scored two unanswered goals to tie the game and nearly put this game into overtime. But the Daniel Cleary goal ended all that talk.

But that wasn't the best of the night. The Carolina Hurricanes, who once held a 3-1 series lead over the Boston Bruins, scored a goal with just over a minute left in overtime to advance to the Eastern Conference Finals. What made this exciting was the way the final goal was scored. Just like everyone fears, a mistake made on a seemingly meaningless play allowed Scott Walker to poke in the game winner in front of a stunned Boston crowd.

So now we get a very interesting Final Four. The Cardiac Canes will take on the starry Penguins while the favored Red Wings take on their rival Blackhawks.

Let's hope both go seven!

Scott Walker Labels Aaron Ward With A Cheap Shot

The league has to review this play, this is suspension worthy. I would say about 4-5 games at least. I don’t care what some homer writer from Carolina has to say, this was a cheap sucker punch. Back in 1995 when Rangers goon Tie Domi sucker punched the gutless puke Ulf Samuelsson and he got 8 games. In my opinion Scott Walker broke the code by punching a guy that wasn't ready to fight, watch the tape Ward had no intention of fighting he still had his gloves on. That is a sucker punch. There is no sense to Scott Walker's act of thuggery and Walker is very lucky that Bruins tough guy Lucic wasn't able to get a hold of him.
