Saito to Cardinals?

As for possible options, any team eying Francisco Rodriguez or Brian Fuentes could look to him as a fallback. The Cardinals, who struggled without a closer this year, could trade for Saito. He went 4-4 with a 2.49 ERA and 18 SV, but he would hardly cost the Cardinals anything.A

As for other teams that could pursue Saito, the Mets, Indians, Orioles, Rockies, and Red Sox.A

This story was approved by MLB Rumors.

Contracts and Trades in the offseason..

  CONTRACT ISSUES

Free agents: Alou, OF; Fernando Tatis, OF; Damion Easley, 2B; Perez, LHP; Martinez, RHP; Hernandez, RHP; Luis Ayala, RHP; Ricardo Rincon, LHP; Matt Wise, RHP.

Eligible for arbitration: Ryan Church, OF; John Maine, RHP; Pedro Feliciano, LHP; Aaron Heilman, RHP; Duaner Sanchez, RHP.

  Player options: None

Club options: Delgado, 1B, $12 million, $4 million buyout

   Non-tender possibilities: None

Like last season, they have their reasons. Though general manager Omar Minaya's starting lineup is all but set with the exception of 2B and LF. The Starting Rotation might need some retooling and the Bullpen has to get a new look.

Oliver Perez and Pedro Martinez, two significant pieces of this season's rotation, will both hit free agency in the days following the World Series. And the few pitchers waiting in the wings represent a combination of youth and inexperience. It's a combination that the Mets, historically, have tried to avoid.

And so a team that boasted one of baseball's largest payrolls -- roughly $137 million at season's end -- is likely only to add to that figure. Assuming the Mets exercise their $12 million club option on Carlos Delgado's contract, they will shed four significant salaries: those of Martinez, Perez, Moises Alou and Orlando Hernandez. After accounting for increases in other salaries, that's roughly $25 to $30 million off the books.

It's a near certainty that the Mets will reinvest all of it.

Mets have plenty of needs especially in relief, but the rotation could be revamped. The Mets can go out and try to trade for a pitcher like Jake Peavy, Zach Grienke, or a Matt Cain. If the Mets go out and try to get one of these elite young pitchers they will have to use one of their Top Prospects including Fernando Martinez. Even though the Mets think F-Mart has a high ceiling and he is only 19 yrs old, they may make a move here. It is not imposible...

The bullpen needs a obvious facelift. Guys like Aaron Heilman and Scott Schoeneweis should be moved and apparently have some value left. Joey DeMayo on Mike Silva's NY Baseball Digest lastnight suggested that maybe the Mets can make a trade including Aaron Heilman with the Oakland A's for Huston Street. Billy Beane has always made it known that he likes Heilman and would make him a starter in Oaktown. Stay tuned....

The Mets need a closer and everyone in baseball thinks the Mets can go out and get themselves Francisco Rodriguez. If they fall short in the bidding for the record breaking saves leader. They might go out and see if Brian Fuentes will come to NY. They had some interest in him before the trade deadline but the Rockies were still in the range of the playoffs and they did not want to trade him.

Look for the Mets to compliment who ever they get at closer. They will be in the hunt for middle relievers. They need a left hander specialist and I think the Mets should look at Jeremy Affeldt who is a free agent.

Here are his numbers:

G

GS

W

L

SV

CG

SHO

IP

H

R

ER

HR

BB

K

ERA

WHIP

BAA

Total

74

0

1

1

0

0

0

78.1

78

36

29

9

25

80

3.33

1.31

.260

Considering he pitched in Cincinatti, He might be better suited for Citi-Field.

Other guys I would look at are Juan Cruz. People are saying Juan Cruz, who is he??

Check out his numbers:

G

GS

W

L

SV

CG

SHO

IP

H

R

ER

HR

BB

K

ERA

WHIP

BAA

Total

57

0

4

0

0

0

0

51.2

34

17

15

5

31

71

2.61

1.26

.192

In only 51.2 innings, he gave up 34 hits and struck out 71...

In speaking of second base, the Mets have many of options here. They have the incumbent Luis Castillo who I would trade for anything, but Joey DeMayo (NY Baseball Digest) has said that the Mets might be able to get a Eric Byrnes from the Arizona Diamondbacks for Castillo since they want to get rid of Byrnes contract and they need a second basemen (2B Hudson will be a free agent) . If that happend, I would be jumping for joy! Byrnes is a high energy player who brings some grit and toughness the Mets lack.

They also have Dan Murphy who can be the second basemen next year. He is currently in the ArizonaFall league trying to get more work at 2B. If that fails, he might be a platoon outfielder in left.

They also can go out and get Orlando Hudson who is a All-Star 2B. He is a switch hitter who can hit and play great defense.

Of Course if the Mets don't make deal for Eric Byrnes they could look at Free Agent Manny Ramirez who always has been high on Omar Minaya's list or they can get themselves a compliment to Murphy like a Free Agent Juan Rivera who is right handed bat that hits lefties.

We will see what goes on, but these are some things to think about....................

Minaya has some concerns about K-Rod!

Minaya will go back to work

If the Mets were all-in with general manager Omar Minaya, they had to be all-in with manager Jerry Manuel. It was Manuel who turned the mood positive and got the Mets playing productively after he replaced Willie Randolph in mid-June, so he was rewarded with a two-year extension.

But Minaya still has his work cut out. Top priority: closer. Could this be where Francisco Rodriguez ends up? It makes sense, considering the Mets have the resources to offer something in the $15 million- to $18 million-a-year category, but insiders say Minaya might be concerned about K-Rod's drop in velocity. He might be more apt to go for a cheaper closer like Brian Fuentes. This will not electrify the masses.

The Mets spent roughly $140 million on payroll this season but will have deductions (Pedro MartA?nez, Oliver Perez, Moises Alou, and others) that give them about $40 million to play with. Minaya would need to either re-sign Perez or go after CC Sabathia or Derek Lowe.

Minaya made a huge splash last offseason when he traded for Johan Santana, who was worth every bit of the outlay in talent and money. Now he'll likely be tempted by one of the free agent starters.

Minaya likely will pick up the $12 million option for MVP candidate Carlos Delgado, who a year ago would have been gone, his career likely over. Manuel played a huge role in reviving Delgado's career.

Minaya has to take into consideration that the Phillies aren't going away and are a better overall team; they also will delve into the market for a starter to augment their potent offense.

Minaya will be tempted to bring MartA?nez back in the hope that he can reinvent himself, but he has to be sure MartA?nez can be a solid fifth starter. Minaya, too, will be competing with the team across town, who like the Mets are moving into a new stadium and have a lot of money to spend.

Agent : K-Rod wants at least $75 for 5 Yrs

Record-breaking Angels closer Francisco Rodriguez is seeking at least $75 million over five years, agent Paul Kinzer said Wednesday. K-Rod wants "at least" five years at "Mariano money," according to Kinzer, who called that price the "baseline" to get into the ballgame for the All-Star closer who set the single-season saves record this season.

Kinzer made clear, however, that his client was hoping for even more. The agent declined to name a top target price. The Angels are expected to be joined in the derby by the Mets, who presumably have lost closer Billy Wagner for 2009 with an elbow injury that necessitated Tommy John surgery.

Several other teams have been mentioned as being interested, including the Cardinals and Indians.
K-Rod : Open to be Mets Closer!

Frankie Rodriguez' locker sits in the left-hand corner of the Angels' clubhouse. It is a prominent place for the Angels' most prominent pitcher. K-Rod put together a record-setting season, compiling a major-league record 62 saves.

Where will he be dressing next season? Rodriguez becomes a free agent after the World Series. The Mets, who are coming off Collapse II, have a nightmare bullpen.

This is a match made in baseball heaven.

The Mets traded for Johan Santana last offseason; this year they need to sign K-Rod. It's that simple. Omar Minaya owns a new contract extension despite the Mets' failings, now he needs to go out and get a super closer to replace Billy Wagner.

Minaya came to New York with the idea that to become a championship team, you must start by building a great bullpen. Somehow, that all changed.

Rodriguez, 26, said he doesn't know where he is going to wind up, but he loves New York and would not be intimidated by playing in the Big Apple. In 2002 he visited the Statue of Liberty with his cousin, who lives in New York, and still remembers the trip as if it were yesterday.

"The Statue of Liberty is something I always wanted to see; it was a dream come true," said Rodriguez, whose Angels remain mystified by the Red Sox, having lost 10 straight postseason games to Boston, including a 4-1 defeat in the ALDS opener Wednesday night. They will try to get even tonight at Angel Stadium when Ervin Santana takes the mound against Daisuke Matsuzaka.

Rodriguez was shocked that the Mets collapsed for the second straight season.

"They have an unbelievable team, so much talent," he said. "But the bullpen struggled."

Asked if he could wind up as the Mets closer, Rodriguez smiled and said, "You never know. We're going to look at all our options and we'll see. "
K-Rod might not be the answer...

I have been promoting the go get K-Rod, but I have noticed a couple of things during the playoffs. He is not as overpowering as we all thought, though he has saved more games than the whole Mets bullpen this year. The other problem is he will demand a high price tag because of his new saves record. The Mets have to be careful here and even though he is 26 he might have arm problems down the road. He has a violent delivery (hurky jerky) that could develop problems sooner than later.

One other alternative is to build within as Eddie Kunz and Robert Parnell continue to develop. The Mets probably think that since they have a new ballpark in place, they better set the standards high in order to make a big splash in NYC and sell some tickets. Kunz pitched well in Double A and was the Binghamton closer. He came up but never really got the shot in the bullpen. He came into a couple of games and did not prove that he can fill a void that was desperately needed. Parnell showed some promise in the games that he pitched, with his fastball that was clocked in the mid 90's he looked like he can be closer material. The Mets only had Heilman who can throw as hard as Parnell this year (after Billy went down) and maybe Parnell can get a chance at closer or a bigger role in 2009.

The Mets can try another source in free agency to get closer in Brian Fuentes. Who was coverted by the Mets this year at the trade deadline, but the Rockies were unwilling to part because they thought they had a playoff chance. A couple of things that I can say about Fuentes is he will be much cheaper and he will replace the lefty arm that they had in Billy Wagner. He hides the ball well from his delivery and if he can pitch well in Colorado, he would certainly pitch well in a unelevated playing surface in Citi-Field. Shea Stadium was a good pitchers park, lets hope that Citi-Field remains the same.....

What it comes down to is this: Do the Mets make the big splash to get the big market free agent in Rodriquez? or Do they save themselves some money in which they can spend on other needs? The Final answer is the Mets need a closer, they just have to find one that fits them best!

Shapiro's End of the Year Presser LIVE @ 3 PM Tuesday

Guys I just wanted to give you a heads up that the End of the Year Press Conference by Mark Shapiro will be done tomorrow at 3 PM ET and it will be broadcasted live on Sportstimeohio if you have it. Bruce Drennan will be doing a follow up interview immediately following that and I'd consider it a can't miss. I have a class that ends at 2:50 so I should be back right around that time to hear it all and I'll provide my thoughts after. Check it out if you get a chance.

Baseball-America has named four K-Tribers as High-A All-Stars. Carlos Santana took home the overall Player of the Year Award. Indians have the most and let me tell you that theres a lot of players to choose from in High-A and this is no silly honor. Four All-Stars is very good.

Of course as you can see from that post if you clicked it, Scott Lewis was named Rookie of the month for October. Certainly a well-deserved honor, congrats to Scott.

Anthony Castrovince might be covering the American League playoffs, but he wasn't too busy to answer mailbag questions. Now with the offseason underway, it will be a regular Monday occurance. Yippie! Don't ask him about Manny Ramirez or Francisco Rodriguez, that's all!

I now leave you with the stiring words of Alden Gonzalez

It seems like it's all worth it now.
All those cold Ohio nights dancing on the field; those midweek day games entertaining smaller crowds; the time, the energy, the sweat, and even the injuries.

For Slider -- the Indians' mascot since 1990 -- it all culminated on Sept. 29, when he was inducted into the Mascot Hall of Fame.

Not what you were expecting was it? Yes, Slider was named to the Mascot Hall of Fame.. Congrats to Slider and more importantly the man behind the furry pink headed monster-type thingabob.. What is slider anyway? Err yeah, Dan Kilday, the man behind the Slider. Take a minute and read some of the stuff Slider went though.. Its fun..

Anyway.. HEY Presser, tomorrow, 3.. get it learn some stuff, study Shapiros words!

Just not sold on K-Rod

For what he's going too cost and the potential risk of injury, I'm just not sold on Francisco Rodriguez. There are numerous reports on his violent delivery potentially resulting in injury and that his velocity is already down. In his first three playoff years (2002,2004,2005) K-Rod was lights out but the last two years he has struggled; 2007- ERA 54.00 one game, one out, two runs; 2008- ERA 7.71 two games, 2.1 innings, five hits, two runs and two walks. I wonder if all the extra use in the regular season is making him break down by the time the post season arrives.

David Lennon of NY Post also has concerns about K-Rod, not just injuries but also his demeanor....

And what's with yelling at your team after coming off the mound? There was K-Rod, screaming at the dugout, "Let's go!" as if imploring the Angels to score some runs. If I was Mark Teixeira, I'd be like, "Easy pal. We're trying over here. Maybe if you didn't tee up that changeup on Friday, we wouldn't have our backs against the wall." source NY Post

The thing is the Mets could sign two or three pitchers for what K-Rod will cost. I could see them signing Fuentes and Cruz or Lyon for less then what Rodriguez would cost and have both a closer and set-up man....
