Ridings, Steele among leaders at Tampa Bay

PALM HARBOR, Fla. (AP) -- Tag Ridings and Brendan Steele survived surprisingly cold conditions and a typically tough course at Innisbrook.

Temperatures were in the lower 50s on Thursday morning, and it felt even colder in a strong wind. Ridings and Steele each managed a 3-under 68 to share the lead among the early starters in the opening round of the Tampa Bay Championship.

Defending champion Luke Donald was kicking himself. He was 4-under for the round until dropping three shots on the last four holes for a 70. Even so, only 10 others from the 78 players who teed off in the morning broke par.

Past champions Vijay Singh and K.J. Choi were among those at 69, while Ryo Ishikawa was at 71.

Bradley, Steele return to Shootout

Keegan Bradley and Brendan Steele are defending their title in the Franklin Templeton Shootout, and Dustin Johnson and Ian Poulter also are back for the first time since winning the team event.

''It's big,'' said Bradley, coming off a second-place finish on Sunday in Tiger Woods' World Challenge in California. ''I get to play with Brendan, which is really fun, and I'm defending, which is even more fun.''

Last year, Bradley and Steele became the first U.S. PGA Tour rookies to win the Greg Norman-run tournament, shooting a 13-under 59 in the final-round scramble for a three-stroke victory.

''It's rare that a plan goes that well, especially with golf,'' Steele said. ''You can do everything you're supposed to do, and it doesn't quite work out for you.''

Johnson and Poulter won in 2010, then skipped the event last year because of scheduling conflicts.

''Our games are different, but yet they tie in very, very well i

5 big surprises at the PGA Championship

The PGA Championship has delivered its share of unlikely winners over the years, particularly one stretch in the 1990s when eight of its 10 champions that decade won their first major.

Go back to 1990, and the PGA Championship produced the most players who won only one major in their careers.

A year ago at Atlanta Athletic Club, Keegan Bradley was tied for the lead through 36 holes, and Brendan Steele had a share of the 54-hole lead. This was remarkable because both of these PGA Tour rookies were competing in their first major. Even more surprising was when Bradley made triple bogey on the par-3 15th hole and was trailing by five shots with three holes remaining. He wound up winning in a playoff over Jason Dufner.

Surprise winners can mean different things to different people, but here are five big ones to consider over the years:

Valero Texas Open Is The Tours Next Stop

The Valero Texas Open is this week's stop on the PGA Tour. Celebrating its 90th anniversary, this tournament dates back to 1922 and is one of the oldest on the PGA Tour. A fixture on the San Antonio sports scene, it also has the distinction of being held in the same city longer than any tournament on Tour. This tournament has undergone many changes in its long history, but none as dramatic as the last couple of years when it shifted from a Fall tournament to its current April location, and in 2010 moved to its new home at the challenging AT&T Oaks Course at the TPC San Antonio. With its rugged hill country terrain and the usual Spring Texas winds, this tournament will challenge the greatest players and often sports one of the highest scoring averages on Tour. Last year, rookie Brendan Steele battled the course, 20-30 mph winds and fellow first-year PGA Tour player Kevin Chappell to claim a one stroke victory. It was the first time since the 2006 Phoenix Open that two rookies finished 1-2 in a PGA Tour

Bradley, Steele team to win Shootout

PGA champion Keegan Bradley and Brendan Steele combined to shoot a 13-under 59 in scramble play Sunday to become the first PGA Tour rookies to win the Franklin Templeton Shootout.

Bradley and Steele took control with an eagle by Steele on No. 14 and a birdie on No. 15, finishing at 32-under 184 for a three-stroke victory over two other teams.

''We played well,'' Bradley said. ''We got off to a slow start, kind of like we did all three days, but we played this last stretch of holes really well.''

Steele added: ''We had so much fun that it made it a lot easier for us.''

Bradley and Steele had been talking about playing in Greg Norman's event since the spring and, thus, weren't at the three-format event to ''goof off.''

After sharing the lead with Champions Tour golfers Mark Calcavecchia and Nick Price after the first round of modified alternate shot, Bradley and Steele were one ahead after Saturday's better-ball.

Bradley-Steele share Shootout lead

PGA champion Keegan Bradley and Brendan Steele shot a 10-under 62 in better-ball play Saturday to take a one-stroke lead over Mark Calcavecchia and Nick Price in the Franklin Templeton Shootout.

Bradley and Steele had a 19-under 125 total at Tiburon Golf Club.

''Our goal was to have two people in on every hole, and not make stupid, aggressive plays, and just play the way we normally play, and we did,'' Bradley said. ''We had a lot of fun. We were making putts and birdies. It seems easy right now, and we're excited to play that scramble tomorrow.''

Calcavecchia and Price, trying to become the first Champions Tour duo to win the 12-team event, had a 63.

Rory Sabbatini and Jhonattan Vegas were two strokes back at 17 under after a 60, and Rickie Fowler and Camilo Villegas were 16 under after a 63.

The event will finish Sunday with a scramble round.

Nine teams were tied for the lead or within a stroke before Bradley and Steele birdied Nos. 7-10 to take a two-stroke advanta

Nick Price had a hole-in-one and teamed with fellow Champions Tour player Mark Calcavecchia for a 9-under 63 and a share of the lead with PGA Champion Keegan Bradley and Brendan Steele on Friday in the Franklin Templeton Shootout.

Price also made a 30-foot birdie putt on the final hole in the modified alternate-shot format. Bradley and Steele played the final six holes in 7 under in the first round on Tiburon Golf Club's Gold Course.

Jerry Kelly and Steve Stricker, the longtime friends from Madison, Wis., who won the 2009 event, were a stroke back, and Rickie Fowler and Camilo Villegas were two shots back. The 12 two-man teams will play a better-ball round Saturday and close with a scramble Sunday in the $3 million event.

Price's 4-iron shot from 213 yards on No. 12 hopped a couple of times and rolled right into the cup.

''We're 4 under through 11 holes, which we didn't really take advantage I think of the good start we got off to,'' Price said. ''And then what can

FedEx Cup runner-up Webb Simpson and 2011 PGA Championship winner Keegan Bradley lead the field at the 23rd annual Shark Shootout beginning Friday at Tiburon Golf Club.

Bradley is partnering with Brendan Steele in the challenge-season event featuring 12 two-man teams playing modified alternate shot, better ball, and scramble over three rounds.

Earlier this year, Steele won the Valero Texas Open, and was having dinner with Bradley and their agent. They both asked their agent if they could get in the Shootout. Then Bradley went out and won the Byron Nelson, and the PGA. That made it pretty easy.

''We've texted each other a bunch about (the Shootout),'' Bradley said. ''We're really excited to get out there and play. We're going to treat this as serious as anything and try to win.''

Said Steele: ''We're not here to goof off. It's a fun week for everybody, and we're really going to enjoy ourselves, but we want to come in and at least contend for t

Woods struggles on return to tour

Tigers Woods is at risk of missing consecutive cuts for the first time in his professional career after shooting a 2-over 73 in the first round at the Frys.com Open on Thursday, putting him six shots off the lead.

In his first tournament in seven weeks, Woods went 13 holes between his only two birdies, indicating his efforts to revamp his game during the time off have not borne fruit.

''That's probably one of the worst putting rounds I've ever had,'' Woods said. ''I can't putt the ball any worse than I did today.''

Texas Open winner Brendan Steele opened with a 4-under 67 on a cool day at CordeValle with a few bursts of showers. He was joined in the lead by Briny Baird, Garrett Willis and Matt Bettencourt.

Woods fell out of the top 50 in the world ranking this week for the first time in 15 years, and it showed. The best golf in his group came from college student Patrick Cantlay, the No. 1 amateur in the world, who opened with a 2-under 69.
