SF Giants Rumors: Freddy Sanchez Drawing Interest

Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com says (via Twitter) there’s some teams that are checking out Freddy Sanchez‘s medical records. Sanchez was only with the San Francisco Giants for a few seasons, but I’m a huge Freddy fan. Which means, it would be hard for me to see him in another uniform. I actually thought he would probably just retire after missing all of the 2012 season.

Freddy has been with the Giants since July 29, 2009. That’s when the Giants pulled the trigger by trading away pitching prospect Tim Alderson to the pirates for Sanchez.
Sanchez only played one full season with the Giants and that was the year they first brought the World Series Championship to San Francisco (2010)! Sanchez hit .292 with 7 homers, 47 RBI, and 55 runs scored. The guy was clutch with the bat, and was the perfect guy to have at the plate for a hit-and-run.
On June 10, 2011, Sanchez tried to make a diving play and dislocated his shoulder against the Reds at AT&T Park. He ended up having to have season-...

Freddy Sanchez Rumors: Teams Interested in Veteran

Though he’s yet to receive an offer this winter, free agent second
baseman Freddy Sanchez has received interest from several teams the veteran’s
agent told Derrick Goold of The St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

The market is thin. Former All-Star Freddy Sanchez, who has
not played since 2011 because of injuries, is available. He has received
interest from teams but no offers. Matt Sosnick, his representative, said
Sanchez is healthy and looking for plate appearances to re-prove his worth.

Sanchez has been severely limited by injuries over the past
few seasons. The 35-year-old did not appear at the major league level last season,
as he only registered 10 at-bats for the Giants’ Triple-A affiliate. In 2011
the infielder was limited to 60 games.

Still, middle infielders are few and far between this
winter, especially those with the track record of Sanchez. He owns a career OPS
of .748 and hit .292/.333/.405 from 2009-11.

Giants' Sanchez out for season after back surgery

San Francisco Giants second baseman Freddy Sanchez had back surgery Thursday, putting him out for the rest of this season and perhaps ending his career, multiple media outlets reported. Sanchez underwent the operation to remove a part of a lower-back disc in a procedure known as a micro discectomy, which was performed by spinal specialist Dr. Robert Watkins and went as planned. "Well, he's out for the year," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said, according to Comcast SportsNet Bay Area. "It's been a long road for Freddy. I know he's disappointed. He certainly played a critical role in our success in 2010. He helped us win a World Series." Sanchez, 34, has not played at all for the Giants this season and hasn't played since June 10, 2011. On that day, he dislocated his shoulder while diving for a ground ball. He signed a $6 million extension last year and will be a free agent after this season. Whether the Giants would want to re-sign San...

Back surgery for Giants' Sanchez, out for season

San Francisco Giants second baseman Freddy Sanchez will have back surgery and miss the entire season.

Manager Bruce Bochy said Thursday that Sanchez will have a discectomy next week.

Sanchez has been injured frequently since joining the Giants in 2009 and been trying to recover from shoulder surgery last August. He injured his lower back in a rehab game last month.

The 34-year-old three-time All-Star and 2006 NL batting champion is scheduled to become a free agent at the end of the season.

Giants 2B Sanchez taken off rehab assignment

Giants second baseman Freddy Sanchez made repairs on his uniform pants as he discussed his latest setback since recovering from shoulder surgery last August.

Sanchez said Friday he felt a strain in his shoulder during pre-game warmups earlier this week with the Giants' Class-A affiliate in San Jose. He was scheduled to play second base Thursday but was moved to designated hitter to avoid further stress on his shoulder.

Sanchez underwent an MRI on his shoulder, with results to be made available following Friday night's game against San Diego.

Giants manager Bruce Bochy said Sanchez will get at least five days off before being reevaluated.

Giants' Sanchez has setback in shoulder rehab

San Francisco Giants second baseman Freddy Sanchez had a setback recovering from a separated right shoulder that has sidelined him since last June. Sanchez strained a muscle in the shoulder during a rehab assignment in San Jose, according to CSN Bay Area. Giants assistant general manager Bobby Evans said Sanchez would be shut down for five days. He was scheduled to be activated on May 11. Sanchez was going to switch from designated hitter to second base on Wednesday but a rainout pushed those plans back. The latest setback pushes that plan ever further. "I think it's not as disconcerting as it may be outside looking in, just because we know he's extremely close right now," Evans told CSN Bay Area. "This little muscle strain gets cleared up, it's irritating him more than anything. He's good to go and we'll have him out there shortly." In the first three games of his rehab assignment for Class A San Jose, Sanchez has four singles and t...

SF Giants Rumors: Sanchez, Burriss, Surkamp, Petit

Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle says infielder Freddy Sanchez has “plateaued” in his rehab, thus the decision to give him a cortisone shot. It’s very clear that Sanchez will not be ready for Opening Day. It’s time to see what Manny Burriss can do with his time at second base till the injured Sanchez can get back on the field. It’s unclear at this time as to how long he will be on the DL.

In another article, Schulman says Eric Surkamp‘s MRI results show no structural damage, and he should resume throwing in a week or two.
Schulman also points out that team officials believe they have found a potential starter in 27-year old Yusmeiro Petit, who hasn’t pitched in the majors since 2009.
Petit went 3-10 in 17 starts for the D-Backs in 2009, and has a career record is 10-20. Petit has pitched well in the Giants minor league camp, so the Giants are willing to take a longer look at him as a possible starter. Petit will get the start Wednesday against the Dodgers.

SF Giants Rumors: Sanchez Likely To Start On DL, Infield Roster Spot Update

Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle says a season-opening trip to the disabled list now seems unavoidable for second baseman Freddy Sanchez. Sanchez has yet to play second base in a game this spring. Manger Bruce Bochy said the team is not likely to keep Sanchez on the Opening Day roster as a pinch hitter.Duane Kuiper was on KNBR with Murph & Mac this morning. Kuiper thinks Manny Burriss will be the Opening Day second baseman if he makes the team. He also believes Mike Fontenot could be on the bubble right now to make the team.Ryan Theriot would likely make the team to face the tough lefties when the San Francisco Giants give shortstop Brandon Crawford a day off.The season isn’t far away.
Sanchez making progress in return from injury

Giants infielder Freddy Sanchez took ground balls at second base and threw to first Wednesday for the first time since he dislocated his right shoulder on June 10, a significant moment in his rehab.

Sanchez returned to the field two days after feeling some soreness in his back. He's not too worried about his short-term prognosis though. He's looking forward to being ready by opening day.

''That's the main goal,'' Sanchez said. ''I'm just anxious to get out there. Anxious is an understatement.''

San Francisco manager Bruce Bochy said he hopes to have Sanchez ready to play in a game by the second week of March.

''It's important the pace picks up a bit,'' Bochy said. ''It would be nice to start getting him some at-bats.''

Sanchez and catcher Buster Posey, also coming off surgery, figure to improve both the Giants' anemic offense and shoddy defense.

San Francisco ranked near the bottom in hitting (28th), runs scored (29t

SF Giants Rumors: Wilson, Sanchez and Posey

Andrew Baggarly of the San Jose Mercury News gives some insights on a few players. Baggarly said closer Brian Wilson arrived in Arizona last week to get a jump on his throwing program. In the next few days he’s expected to throw off a mound for the first time since the San Francisco Giants shut him down because of recurring elbow soreness last season.

The injury did not require surgery, so the Giants are hoping the time off will help his cranky elbow. Wilson shouldn’t have any restrictions during Spring Training.
Freddy Sanchez has made steady progress with his surgically-repaired right shoulder, and will start making throws to bases next week. Hitting hasn’t been a problem for Sanchez since he started swinging the bat this offseason.
Everything is pointing in the right direction for a healthy Sanchez at the start of the 2012 season. Sanchez is in a contract year, and he’s a guy that puts everything out on the field at all times. I expect him to have a solid year if he can avoid t...

SF Giants Rumors: Freddy Sanchez Says Shoulder Is Coming Along Great

Happy Birthday Freddy Sanchez! The San Francisco Giants second baseman is confident he’ll be ready for Opening Day, according to John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle.

“I’m doing great. I’m throwing. I’m out to 60 feet now, and the shoulder’s coming along great,” said Sanchez.
When Buster Posey went down the Giants were still able to battle and win some games, but when Sanchez went down. It was pretty much a done deal for the 2011 season. It’s going to be nice to see them both healthy and back in the lineup for the 2012 season!
With no big free agent signings. The Giants are going to need everyone to be healthy and have good years.

Winter meetings update: Marlins sign Reyes, Sanchez to begin throwing Monday

Baseball’s annual Winter Meetings began Sunday night with a splash. Unfortunately, it wasn’t the sound of a Rawlings baseball landing in McCovey Cove.
The Florida…scratch that…Miami Marlins have hauled in the first catch from a sea of attractive free agents, reportedly agreeing to a six-year, $106 million contract with shortstop Jose Reyes.
The Marlins also agreed to terms with Hanley Ramirez (arbitration-eligible), meaning the Fish will field one of the more premier young infields in the league (Hanley will slide over to third).
Many Giants fans were salivating over the thought of the speedy Reyes coming to San Francisco, but his price tag was deemed way too expensive for management’s taste.
San Francisco Chronicle writer John Shea is in Dallas covering the Winter Meetings and tweeted tonight that Giants second baseman Freddy Sanchez will begin throwing tomorrow for the first time since he dislocated his shoulder diving for a ground ball back in June. Sanchez missed the rest of the season, and in

The Freddy Sanchez Extension – Eight Months Later

About eight months ago — April 1st — the Giants extended Freddy Sanchez through 2012 for $6MM. The timing of the move was a bit peculiar, but it ultimately seemed like a prudent deal. The 2B free agent market would be somewhat thin in the upcoming offseason, and the Giants were looking ahead to ensure that second base would not be a void for them entering 2012.
