FINAL SCORE IN ANAHEIM: Angels 6, Rays 0Forget the Mike Napoli bobbleheads, it was Bizarro Night at the Big "A". From the 2008 version of Ervin Santana dealing nasty pitches from the mound, to the bases loaded double off the bat of Jeff Mathis, the Halos showed that the bottom of their line-up can be just a potent as the top and middle.

Ervin Santana: The Anti-Rally Monkey.

Forget the ERA, forget the win/loss record, forget the hits
and walks and strikeouts. Forget the speed gun.

Ervin Santana is never going to get better than he is now,
for one simple reason.

He doesn't think he needs to.

Listen to John Lackey after a loss. He growls like a bear
without food. You get the feeling he'd scratch the other team's eyes out to get
a win. You want quotes? Lackey's are usually concise: "I stunk."

That's why he's so good. Lackey n...

Back at it!

What is up everyone? Glad to be back in the Yard. Weird to be doing this blog in mid-May and I just made my first start in the Majors this year... Trust me, I have been chomping at the bit to get back and it feels real good to be on the field with my guys. This was the first time in my career that I missed time for an injury so I listened to all the trainers and took their advice in not rushing the injury to get back too soon. It really is a frustrating process when you are rehabbing an injury, especially when you have to watch your guys on TV. That was different. I'm back though and ready to get after it.

About the start...

I felt fine out there, no pain in the triceps at all which was great. I didn't have the life on my fastball that I usually would at this point in the season but it will be there after a few starts. I'm just glad that I am contributing now and not a spectator. I take pride in getting the ball each fifth day and now I can be there for our team. Coming back and seeing our team in first place speaks to the depth of this team. I mean, how about the start by Joe Saunders and Ervin Santana? Those guys have stepped up big time and really have matured as big league pitchers. Anyway, I will be talking with you guys soon.

Losing Ervin

It's tough losing a guy like Ervin. He's been a guy that has really helped us, especially last year. He's been struggling and has been given a lot of opportunities to work things out. They just decided that they wanted to send him down so he can get it back. The talent is definitely there. He really has been struggling for an extended period of time. By sending him down he can work on things without as much pressure. He's got great stuff. He just needs to refine his location and secondary pitches. Once he does that he'll be back doing well.

It's a tough deal because you really don't know what to say - good luck, we'll see you again. And he was obviously not happy, so he didn't say much. He's been called into the the office a couple of times. They've been watching him closely for awhile now so it's not a surprise. Ervin works hard and he'll figure it out.

It's actually good for both guys because Ervin needs to work things out and Joe Saunders is ready for his chance. I told him when they sent him down earlier that he would be back for good soon. He definitely has that chance. If he pitches well down the stretch he'll be here. This is going to be his tryout. We need more consistency. We're in a close race and need a guy to be a little more consistent.
