Alomar, Martinez among 26 on MLB Hall ballot

Roberto Alomar is among 15 first-time candidates of this year's Hall of Fame ballot, joining holdovers Mark McGwire, Andre Dawson and Bert Blyleven.

Edgar Martinez, Barry Larkin and Fred McGriff also are new to the ballot this year.
Reward Retrospective - 1985 AL MVP - Right Team, Wrong Player

Beyond the Box Score will be starting a new series, Reward Retrospective, that will look at past awards (MVP, Cy Young, ROY, etc.) that peak our interest and examine them with some of todays metrics. I hope you enjoy these looks back at various players and seasons.

In 1985, I was 10 and never knew that it would be the last time I would see my Royals in the postseason. As a hardcore Brett fan, I wanted to go back and see if he was deserving of the AL MVP in 1985. &nb...

The Hall Of Fame and Rickey Henderson Go Perfectly Together

Tomorrow will be Rickey Henderson's induction into baseball's Hall of Fame. It has the potential to be one of the greatest induction speeches in history. I hope so since Rickey deserves that. In my lifetime (I'll turn 34 tomorrow), Henderson may be the second best player in baseball (Bonds first). He was a freak on the base-paths as the stud of the stolen base era of baseball. He also hit for power as all those lead-off home runs will attest. He wasn't the greatest fielder bu...

Tough Start

Well, as always I hope all is well in the Yard!

First off, let me say Congrats to my boy Rickey Henderson for being selected to the Hall of Fame. ?It was great to hear the experts sing his praise. ?Too often we only hear about one side of Rickey...his perceived "arrogance" seemed to always have the spotlight, so it was nice to hear people talk about how great of a baseball player he really was. ?Congrats Rickey, you are one of my all time faves and it is well deserved. ?I for one can't wait to here his speech!

We had a tough weekend to start the season to say the least. ?We lost both our weekend games, and are now 0-2 to start the season. ?Calgary beat us at home 12-10 and Minny beat us there 10-7. ?There were some good things that came from the weekend and we are going to build on them, but it still stings right now. ?Unfortunately it won't get any easier as we welcome Rochester and Gary Gait to town this weekend. ?We are going to have to get better!!

As far as the NFL goes, I had a 50/50 weekend getting both the Eagles and Ravens right but losing on the Chargers and the Panthers. ?I really thought Carolina was the best team left, but I guess I was wrong. ?That was the one game I thought was a guarantee...That is the NFL for you!! ?This weekend I am going to ride the Eagles and the Steelers. ?Big Ben impressed me this weekend and we all know how good that Iron Curtain is!! ?From there we'll see who I pick to win the Super Bowl!

Since I am fairly depressed about our past weekend I am going to spend some of my free time watching comedies to get my spirits up. ?What a segeway to my next top five list:

Top Five funny movies:

1. ?Dumb and Dumber: ?What else needs to be said, this is the all time classic. ?Jim Carrey at his best!

2. ?Revenge of the Nerds: ?This "classic" will be watched generation from now and still have the same appeal. ?I still try to watch it once a year....Okay, twice!

3. ?Beverly Hills Cop: ?I love Eddie Murphy, and he is at his best in this one!! ?Loved the sequels too, but this one still stands up the the best ever.

4. ?Best in Show: ?I saw this on a whim, and a recommendation from Pat Coyle (who knows his movies). ?Am I ever glad I did, this is a classic, witty comedy. ?

5. ?The National Lampoon Vacation series: ?I just happened to see Vegas the other day and it reminded me of how much I love these movies. ?The original vacation is always the best, but you can't have Christmas without a little Cousin Eddy!!

As always some that didn't quite make the cut:

Blazing SaddlesTommy BoySomething about MaryMe, Myself and IreneWaiting for GuffmanKingpinBad SantaCable Guy

I could go on all day I guess.......

I hope you enjoyed, I look forward to seeing everyone's lists as well as getting in the WIN?column?this weekend versus Rochester.

Until then,

Cheers,

Colin #7

Rickey Henderson?s election to the Hall of Fame is a foregone conclusion, and next Monday the Greatest Leadoff Hitter in Baseball History will become the first righty-lefty position player welcomed to Cooperstown, which isn?t really surprising since only 45 hitters in MLB history have had this rare combination.
Henderson, however, won?t be the first player in [...]

Rickey being Rickey

Before Manny Ramirez was "crawling on his hands and knees", there stood a man in MLB above all others.

A man who spoke in the third person, a man who strutted around naked in the mirror, a man who told himself everyday that he was the greatest.

That man was Rickey Henderson.

Begin the "top five" lists

Hey all, what is good in the yard? I have been enjoying some time off the past few weeks. It has allowed me to catch my breath and resume enjoying family, friend and work time!! I have been doing some teaching in the grade 8 and grade 7 schools and it has been awesome. I have also been spending tons of time with my little girl and even snuck in a game or two of golf?.still very inconsistent by the way. I shot a 92 at Rebel Creek yesterday, which isn't great, but isn't horrible either!!

In my sporting world, I have had some good and some bad to say the least. The good starts with the Wolverines beating Nebraska in the Big House last Saturday. How awesome was that!! Nice to see them starting to play a little better. We also finally got rid of Millen in Detroit!! I can't wait to see if there is a trickle down effect to the players. It will be interesting to see how the players respond, as he didn't really have any say in how the players were playing and the coaches were coaching, but maybe getting rid of him will start a new, exciting era for the Lions? Here is to hoping!!!

The Habs will start of this season with very high hopes as will their fans. I actually really like how we shape up and barring any major changes, we should contend to win the East!! We will keep our eyes on that progress throughout the year.

My football pool is going okay, as I am just over .500 and still very much in the hunt. When you play with lines it changes everything. I am getting used to it, but still I find it hard to pick a team favored by 14.5 points, but like I said I am figuring it out as we go along. I am tied for 6th place so far.

Over the next month or so, I will be checking in to drop articles revolving around music, movies and sports. They are the three things that I find most interesting in my life. I will be doing many different "TOP FIVE" type articles and I am really looking forward to hearing from you about your thoughts.

For today, I am going to start with my top five favorite athletes of all time and why. Here goes?.

1.	Patrick Roy: I have to give him my number one spot because he influenced me more than any other athlete ever?simple as that. He played my position on my favorite team and he was always, almost always at the top of his game. I loved how he was confident, and I loved how he played his best when this team needed him the most. It was that trait that I love the most about him. His ability to rise up to the occasion was unparalleled!!
2.	Paul and Gary Gait: For those of you not involved in the lacrosse world the Gait twins might have been the only two names you have ever heard of, and for good reason. They were the first two lacrosse players to go "main stream", taking the game with them. If not for them, there would be no pro lacrosse as we know it today and less chance of Canadians going to the States on Scholarship. But more than all of that, they changed how we play the game. Their stick skills and out of this world tricks made every lacrosse player in my generation want to be Paul or Gary Gait.
3.	Rickey Henderson: Rickey was Rickey and that is what I loved about him. I loved his flash and I loved his arrogance, but what I loved about him the most was his ability to change games. In a game that is far too laid back, he brought a moxy that I was able to cling on to. In one at bat he could change the course of a ball game. There are very few players that could ever do that like he could. Lastly, I loved the fact that he was great and he knew it. I am certainly not arrogant in my own life, but I learned a lot from his confidence.
4.	Isiah Thomas: Isiah has taken some lumps lately because of his inability to run a basketball program, but that doesn't diminish the player that influenced me in my younger days!! He was creative, decisive and an ultimate leader on a very "blue" collar team. I loved the Pistons because of him. The fact that he was undersized also endeared him to me. But again, the reason I liked him better than the others is because he knew how to win.
5.	Mats Naslund: The fact that he played for the Habs when I was young had a great deal to do with how much I loved watching him play. I would love how he could handle the puck and dictate games at such a small size. But what I loved about him the most was that he was the best player on the best team in the league, as far as I was concerned. He was smooth; he could pass, score and even play tougher than his size. In my mind, he was a great leader on a team full of leaders when he played.

Enjoy the list, I will be back with my next of the "top five" lists.

Cheers,
