LoDuca: I am not a cheater

Paul Lo Duca, Washington Nationals' catcher and a character in the non-fiction essay the Mitchell Report, called into the Joe and Evan Show on WFAN 660 in New York this morning. The show hosts, who have had plenty of harsh words for Lo Duca, were extremely cordial but did an honorable job in asking Lo Duca several steroid related questions.

Lo Duca to the Nationals?

The Nationals are looking at free agent Paul Lo Duca, who won't be back with the Mets after hitting .272 with nine homers in 119 games for New York. The Nationals like former Rule 5 draft pick Jesus Flores at catcher, but they're looking for some insurance in the event he can't handle the job full-time. Lo Duca still wants to play regularly, so Washington is probably a long shot for him unless all his other options fall through.

Mets: Who's On 2nd? Mark Loretta?

According to the Daily News, the Mets have been looking at Astros 2nd baseman Mark Loretta.

Much like Paul Lo Duca, Loretta is a professional hitter and ideally suited for any lineup's No. 2 slot. Manager Willie Randolph has been searching for a No. 2 hitter seemingly all season, and particularly since Lo Duca was forced to vacate that spot in the wake of Moises Alou's injury. Once Alou returns to his regular No. 6 spot in the order, Lo Duca would presumably return to the 2-hole, though nothing is set in stone at this point.

With a bit more foot speed and a higher OBP, Loretta might represent an upgrade over Lo Duca in that spot. The fiery catcher has struggled this season, particularly as of late, as the career .288 hitter has seen his average dip to .265 and his OBP to just .310. Backup Ramon Castro has seen his playing time increase. Whether this trend continues remains to be seen, however if Loretta were to slot in as the team's No. 2 hitter, it would minimize the disruption of the lineup were Lo Duca and Castro to platoon.

Splitsville For She-Rod And Stray-Rod?

While many fans and observers were indignant at the New York Post's invasion of Alex Rodriguez's privacy in yesterday's photo exclusive, at least one person thinks the story was significant: His wife. According to the Daily News, Cynthia Rodriguez was seen "brusquely" leaving the couple's Park Avenue apartment last night with a pair of suitcases in hand. Mrs. Rodriguez refused comment to reporters on the scene.

Meanwhile, in their best efforts to out-do the Post, the News provides various eyewitness accounts of Rodriguez's penchant for mysterious blondes and glitzy strip clubs, detailing the clubs he frequents, the dancers he prefers, and even implying an affinity for the "she-male" type. It's all pretty ridiculous actually. But at least A-Rod now knows how Paul Lo Duca feels.
