Marlins Offense: Possible Solutions Not Too Distant

With some internal and/or modest changes, the offensive woes have the possibility to be resolved more easily than expected.
When looking at the 2013 Marlins season, the very second that the Opening Day lineup was announced with Placido Polanco in the cleanup spot behind Giancarlo Stanton, it was very clear that the offense was in severe dire straits far more worse than anticipated after the offseason. After all, how can it be taken any other way than negatively when a team’s decided solution to protect their best offensive force includes a player batting a good deal of the time in the middle of the order, who is a man that entered the season with only 3 of his 16 seasons having achieved 10 or more homeruns in any of those seasons (peak total of 17 back in 2004), that topped that off with his career high in RBI being a stammering 72 that was achieved a few years ago, in a season when he had a career high of 676 plate appearances. Regardless of the injury issues that led to this occur...

Derek Dietrich Offers Potential Spark for Struggling Marlins

Miami Marlins rookie second baseman Derek Dietrich went 2 for 4 with an RBI single in the Marlins’ 6-2 loss to the Cincinnati Reds on Tuesday night.
The Miami newcomer has gone 6 for 14 with 4 RBI since his call up from Double-A Jacksonville on May 8, serving as the replacement for injured Donovan Solano along with journeyman infielder Nick Green.
A multi-tool talent out of Georgia Tech, Dietrich was selected by the Tampa Bay Rays in the 2nd Round of the 2010 MLB Amateur Draft before being traded to Miami for veteran shortstop Yunel Escobar this past offseason.
Dietrich offers the struggling Miami club a burst of energy in terms of offensive support in the wake of injuries to Giancarlo Stanton and other vital offensive help. After batting .282 with a respectable .408 on-base percentage in 28 games for Double-A Jacksonville before his call up, Dietrich will be relied upon to swing the bat and produce in the middle of the order.
Despite injuries to the heart of the order, Miami manage...

Young Marlins eager to get back to work in Miami

MIAMI Nearly four hours before Tuesday nights first pitch and a full 90 minutes before batting practice, several Miami Marlins were on their home turf performing drills under a bright sun thanks to the open roof.

Clearly, a rough start to Miamis season and a just-completed 3-7 road trip hadnt diminished the players desire to improve.

Perhaps the Marlins were buoyed knowing 14 of their next 19 scheduled games would be at Marlins Park.

I think the comfort level being home again is great, said manager Mike Redmond, whose team then began a nine-game homestand with a 6-2 loss to the Cincinnati Reds.

We can get so much work done here, out on the field and in the cages. We can really get specific with these guys and what they need to work on.

One player taking afternoon grounders was rookie second baseman Derek Dietrich, who made his major league debut at San Diego on May 8. Acquired from Tampa Bay during the offseason, the 23-year-old Dietrich was called up after Donovan Solano went on the disabled list with

Marlins battle early season injuries, adversity

Injury and opportunity have appeared often during the early part of the Miami Marlins season.
Starting pitchers Nathan Eovaldi, Henderson Alvarez, first basemen Logan Morrison and Casey Kotchman, and catcher Jeff Mathis all were put on the disabled list before the season began.
First baseman Joe Mahoney, sidelined for part of spring training, went on the DL in late April with a right hamstring strain. Shortstop Adeiny Hechavarria was out with a bruised elbow but returned for the current road trip.
Right fielder Giancarlo Stanton (hamstring), second baseman Donovan Solano (ribs), third baseman Chris Valaika (fractured wrist) and pitcher Alex Sanabia (groin) presently are sidelined.
All that, and the season isnt six weeks old!
Spots to fill mean opportunity for other players. Veteran journeymen catcher Miguel Olivo, infielder Nick Green and outfielder Matt Diaz are among the players added to help cope with the absences.

Tinkering with the Lineup is not Enough for Royals

by John Viril—
Kansas City’s three game losing streak has suddenly made the Royals’ lack of offense apparent. The Royals have scored 3 runs or less in 18 of 30 games this season. The team is tied with the Marlins for last in home runs in major league baseball with 19. Overall, the Royals rank 9th in the American League in scoring with 4.26 runs per game.
In response to this problem, Kansas City manager Ned Yost has tinkered with his lineup the last few days. Utility men Elliot Johnson and Miguel Tejada have gotten starts at 2nd base. Yost told reporters that he intended to play outfielder Jarrod Dyson more in RF, apparently in a quasi-platoon with Jeff Francoeur. Yost employed both of these tactics against Baltimore on Wednesday—and scored 3 runs in a 5-3 loss to Baltimore.
While these moves seem to be common-sense ways to get more production, it’s clear they won’t be enough. With 1B Eric Hosmer and 3B Mike Moustakas scuffling through their 3rd full seasons in the big leagues, the R...

Miami Marlins Recall Nick Green, Disable Donovan Solano

The Miami Marlins have recalled infielder Nick Green from their Triple-A New Orleans minor league affiliate to fill the roster void on the parent club as second baseman Donovan Solano went on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left intercostal muscle. Ironically, Green was designated for assignment and then optioned by the Marlins just last week.

Solano hits a homer, Marlins lose three in a row

PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- JJonathan Pettibone pitched neatly into the seventh, Ryan Howard, Chase Utley and Domonic Brown hit solo homers and the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Miami Marlins 4-1 Friday night.

Pettibone (2-0) allowed one run and five hits in 6 1-3 innings in his third start filling in for injured lefty John Lannan.

Donovan Solano hit a solo homer for the Marlins, who've lost three in a row after winning three straight.

Ricky Nolasco (2-3) gave up four runs and eight hits in six innings.

The Phillies are 9-2 combined against the Marlins (8-22) and New York Mets (11-15), but 5-14 against other teams. They're 9-3 when Pettibone, Lannan or Kyle Kendrick start and 5-13 when aces Cole Hamels, Roy Halladay and Cliff Lee take the mound.

Pettibone left after allowing a one-out single in the seventh. Antonio Bastardo entered and walked two batters to load the bases. Bastardo then struck out pinch-hitter Austin Kearns swinging at a 3-2 pitch out of the strike zone and fanned pinch-hitter Matt Dia

The Phils start their home stand with the bats returning as they crush the Marlins, 7-2.

Behind the once again good pitching of Kyle Kendrick, the Phils’ bats once again come alive as they crush the listless Marlins, 7-2.
The Marlins took the lead in the top of the first as, with runners on the corners, and with nobody out, Placido Polanco hits into a 5-4-3 doubleplay, wiping out at second base, for the inning’s first out, Donovan Solano, who had just singled, as he knocked in Juan Pierre, who had started the game off with a walk, moved up to second base on Solano’s single, then stole third base, the 600th steal of his career, giving the Marlins a 1-0 lead. The Phils would tie the game up at one-all in the bottom of the second as, with one man on, Dom Brown hits a solo home run to right field, his fourth home run of the season. The Phils took the lead in the bottom of the fourth as, with one man out, Ryan Howard, after a frustrating two days in Cleveland where his monster shots would die between the warning track and the wall, hits a solo bomb of his own to left field, ...

Comeback Extends Win Streak To Three

The Miami Marlins didn’t lead on Tuesday until the end of the game but that was good enough for the 2-1 victory over the New York Mets which was their third straight win. Kevin Slowey pitched a masterful eight innings but was a victim once again of low run support. The third consecutive win gives Miami it’s longest winning streak of the year and improves their record to 8-19.
Slowey struck out eight in his eight innings on the mound and allowed only one run on four hits. It was the longest outing for a Marlins’ starter this year which the team needed after a 15 inning game a day earlier. Slowey remained 0-2 on the year as the Marlins were unable to score until after he exited but he did lower his E.R.A to a sparkling 2.15. Ryan Webb was credited with the win after pitching a scoreless ninth to keep the deficit at one. Webb is now 1-1 on the season with a great 2.35 E.R.A of his own.
Things were quiet for the Marlins’ offense until the bottom of the ninth with two of the tea...

Marlins double-play combo coming together

JUPITER, Fla. Spring training for a new double-play combination consists of ground ball after ground ball after ground ball
Its a lot of repetition, said Miami Marlins infield coach Perry Hill, whose job has included hitting grounders to second baseman Donovan Solano and shortstop Adeiny Hechavarria.
They have to work together enough that when a ball is hit in a certain direction, they know what their partner is going to do. Are they going to underhand it? Backhand toss? Throw it?
Marlins fans who remember Luis Castillo and shortstop Alex Gonzalez should understand the importance of a team being strong up the middle, especially one built around pitching.
Solano, 25, made his major-league debut with Miami in May and became the regular second baseman after Omar Infante was traded to the Detroit Tigers in July. He batted .295 with two homers and 28 RBIs last season.
