Braves Have Added More Than You Think

There has been plenty of buzz this spring about the new faces the Braves have added by way of trade and free agency. And rightly so. Derek Lowe, Kenshin Kawakami, Javier Vazquez, and Garrett Anderson, among others, signify a major upgrade to last year’s injury depleted squad. But if you think these four players represent [...]

Anderson is expected to platoon in left field with Matt Diaz, but he gives the Braves a contact hitter who seems to come through in clutch situations. "Last season, he hit .338 in 130-at bats with runners in scoring position, including a .356 with two outs. In the late innings or close games, he hit .371 with a .441 OBP in 89 at-bats. "

Quick Hits:

The Cubs are reportedly considering bringing in two Japanese pitchers to compete for a spot in the bullpen. The pitchers, Ken Kadokura and lefty Shigeki Noguchi, both were released by the Yomiuri Giants after the 2008 season. Both pitchers had success in Japan, and could find some success as a middle reliever with the Cubs. Not only that, but they could make Kosuke Fukudome feel a little more comfortable in the clubhouse.

Free agent pitcher Brad Penny is reportedly coming to close to signing with a team. Penny was the NL starter in the All-Star Game in 2006, but struggled to stay healthy in 2008. The Cardinals and Red Sox are his most likely landing spots.

The Rangers have yet to make an offer to Ben Sheets, the Dallas Morning News is reporting. Sources informed me that the Sheets race will likely heat up after Derek Lowe is signed. The market is reportedly bigger than originally thought, with at least 10 teams looking into signing him.

Angels Plan To Be Aggressive

Angels executives are exploring every avenue this offseason to make their team better. These plans currently depend on Mark Teixeira and Francisco Rodriguez, but the Angels will be make moves this season. According to the Chicago Tribune, the Angels may turn to White Sox first baseman Paul Konerko in hopes of pulling off a deal involving Chone Figgins. Figgins is younger and has more to offer a team than Konerko, so there would probably have to be prospects involved, but it isn't out of the realm of possibility. The Angels will also inquire about starting pitcher CC Sabathia, who would put the Angels over the top. The Angels have a lot of money to spend this offseason, but will hesitate taking on big contracts or dumping young players like Figgins.
One thing to worry about is disrupting player chemistry. Pushing veteran Garrett Anderson out in the last year of his contract was hard to see, and bringing in two or three free agents may disrupt the peace in the clubhouse. GM Tony Reagins is very smart and will likely make some small additions to help the farm system or bench, while possibly putting some money out on the market to either bring back a couple players, or go out and find new ones. They should be very busy.
This story was approved by MLB Rumors.

Anderson to Oakland?

He hit .293 with 15 HR in 145 games this season and those could improve if he is exclusively in the DH spot. The Angels have a very crowded infield as it is, so they will likely let him walk. As for other teams that could pursue Anderson, the Rays are another possibility. They have an opening at the DH and right field spot and could offer Anderson a relatively cheap contract and hopes he can come through. His veteran know-how and playoff experience would make him an instant leader in the clubhouse.A
Anderson, 36, will probably stay in the American League but don't be surprised to see the Mets or even Marlins swoop in and give him a one or two year deal.A
This story was approved by MLB Rumors.

Abreu to Athletics?

Athletics GM Billy Beane said the Athletics would like to add a power bat that could help the team for at least two years, opening up the speculation of who that may be. The Athletics are not known to spend big on their players, so they will likely enter 2009 with their young players hoping they will improve. However, if the Athletics offered a two year deal worth about 10-12 million dollars annually to Bobby Abreu, he could be the player that makes a big difference. Carlos Gonzalez, Aaron Cunningham, and Ryan Sweeney will likely lead the way of young outfielders, while Barton and Suzuki in the infield.A
Adding Abreu and resigning Mark Ellis would make this team a whole lot better. If the Athletics take the route of going after veterans looking to bounce back, they could go after Jim Edmonds, Jose Vidro, Richie Sexson, or maybe Garrett Anderson.A
This story was approved by MLB Rumors.

Reggie, Reggie

Our offense has been working really well and Reggie Willits has been a big part of that. When our offense is working it starts at the top. Vlady is great no matter what, but he is really dangerous with guys on base. We need to get runners on in front of him so that he can really do his damage. Reggie has been great getting on base and it has made a huge difference.

We know that he won't be able to hit .370 for the season but there are other things he does that help the offense. He really makes the pitchers work. He'll get six or seven pitches each at bat, which helps everyone else in the lineup. It allows the other guys to see more pitches and get a better feel for what the pitcher is doing. It also helps us get into the other team's bullpen earlier and when you do that the chances of winning go up.

Garrett Anderson is going to come back and he'll be on the field, but I'm telling you now, don't look for Reggie to come out of the lineup. They'll figure something out because Scioscia is really happy with him. He's a really good situational hitter and that fits in well with Scioscia's philosophy.

It wasn't that long ago when the media was on Hatcher because our offense was struggling. We knew we'd come back because we have too many guys with good track records. That's just the way the media is, when things aren't working they have to blame or question somebody and it got blown up. It was definitely unfair to Hatcher. He works hard in the cage throwing to those guys. It's up to the guys to perform. Now all of a sudden he's smarter because we're scoring runs. In reality, he does a good job all the time.

Honoring Scioscia

Last night they honored Scioscia with a scoreboard tribute and we were all over him in the dugout. They played that Sinatra song My Way, which is a little slow. Garrett Anderson asked if someone had died. He was really busting us up. You could tell Scioscia was surprised and a little embarrased. We tried to get him to take a curtain call but he wouldn't do it. We were definitely busting his balls, especially seeing the pictures of him with long hair and a few less pounds. It was funny to see.

He is a solid manager. He's very consistent and doesn't get too high or too low. He is very even kieled. He is a good guy to be running the show because he is consistent and you always know where you stand. There are plenty of guys who are hard asses and others who are easy. Scioscia can really do both. He keeps it light in the clubhouse and guys have fun in there, but when it's time to play he's all business. He really does a great job.

We just finished up photo day, which is always a cool event. The fans come out and line up and take pictures of us. It's cool because you get to interact with the fans and give the kids a high five. I like doing that.

Time to get ready to play the Dodgers.

The Gatorade Commercial

Have you seen the Gatorade commercial I'm in? I finally saw it a few days ago. The whole thing was set up through our front office. It's not like I tried out for the part. I'm on the mound and Derek Jeter's on first trying to steal. Garrett Anderson is playing first base, Howie Kendrick is at second and Shea Hillenbrand is in there too. Derek is a great guy. I've hung out with him a few times. He's fun to be around. I met Harvey Keitel right before the shoot. He was the big time guy with the big trailer. We never saw him between takes. He was chillin' in the trailer while we all just hung out. He had a double when they were lining up each shot so he literally came out only when it was time to shoot. It was a great opportunity to be in a national commercial like that, but it took forever to shoot. We did it over two nights and the shoots were 4-5 hours each. I definitely had no idea how much work goes into making a 45 second commercial. You would literally do something for a few seconds and then they'd move all the lights and the people in the stands. They had to shoot from every angle so you were always stopping and setting up.

I don't think acting is going to become a second career for me, but that's probably ok with everyone.
