Chapman set for Senior PGA title defense

ST. LOUIS (AP) -- Roger Chapman is in the spotlight at the Senior PGA Championship, a year after his breakthrough victory in the major championship.

"Last year, I sort of snuck in under the radar," the 54-year-old Englishman said Wednesday, a day before the start of play at Bellerive Country Club. "I've raised the bar myself. That puts a bit more pressure on me."

Chapman was a surprise winner last year at Harbor Shores in Michigan. Seven weeks later, he joined Gary Player (1987), Jack Nicklaus (1991) and Hale Irwin (1998) as the only players to win two senior major titles in the same season, taking the U.S. Senior Open at Indianwood, also in Michigan.

"It was an incredible year, it's difficult to put into words," he said. "Sometimes, you just have to say, 'Dreams come true.'"

Chapman's best finish in eight starts this season is a 10th-place tie in the Mississippi Gulf Resort Classic in late March.

Esteban Toledo wins in Texas

Esteban Toledo marked the Cinco de Mayo day celebrations by becoming the first Mexican winner in Champions Tour history, beating Mike Goodes with a par on the third hole of a playoff Sunday in the Insperity Championship.

The 50-year-old Toledo, making his ninth start on the 50-and-over tour, eagled the opening hole and finished with a 5-under 67 to match Goodes and Gene Sauers at 6-under 210 at The Woodlands Country Club. Goodes shot a 72, and Sauers - eliminated on the second playoff hole - had a 74.

Goodes shot a 72, and Sauers - eliminated on the second playoff hole with a double bogey- had a 74.

Cinco de Mayo marks the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, when Mexican troops defeated a French army of Napoleon III, then considered the mightiest military in the world. It is celebrated as a day of cultural pride by many Mexican Americans.

Toledo, seven strokes behind Sauers entering the round, earned $270,000 for his second victory in a PGA Tour-sanctioned event. He also won the Web.com Tour's 2005 Lake

Mike Goodes takes Champions Tour lead

Mike Goodes shot a 3-under 69 in gusty winds to take a one-stroke lead Friday after the first round of the Champions Tour's Insperity Championship.

Only seven players in the 81-man field broke par on an unseasonably cold and blustery day. A gust blew down one scoreboard at The Woodlands Country Club.

Goodes bogeyed the second hole, rallied with par saves on the fifth and sixth holes and ran in a 20-foot birdie putt on No. 7. He birdied two of the last three holes.

''The key for me was to save a couple of decent two-putts early in the round,'' Goodes said. ''I felt that was a huge key. The wind was howling right in my face (No. 5) and I hit a good drive and made a tough two-putt.''

On the next hole, Goodes faced another long putt.

''It was about 50-60 feet down one slope, up one slope and back down another slope,'' Goodes said. ''I hit a good second putt from about 3 feet. That was a great two-putt.''

Gene Sauers had the lead at 4 under

Sluman, Faxon win Legends event

After teaming with Craig Stadler for two runner-up finishes in three tries at the Liberty Mutual Insurance Legends of Golf, Jeff Sluman decided it was time for a change.

He called Brad Faxon nearly two years ago to court him as a teammate for the Champion Tour's annual team competition and the new pairing paid off on Sunday as theyn combined for a final-round 7-under-par 65 to finish at 23-under for a one-stroke victory at the Club at Savannah Harbor.

''I had a wonderful four, five years with Stads and all that, but like everything else, it was time,'' Sluman said.

When Sluman called Faxon on Aug. 1, 2011, Faxon - who was becoming eligible for the Champions Tour - was flattered yet somewhat perplexed. Sluman's voice came over the line as a whisper. Asked why he was speaking so softly, Sluman replied ''I don't want Stads to know.''

Sluman and Stadler had partnered for the Legends tournament for 2008, 2009 and 2011, with runner-up finishes in the first two events

Goodes has 2-shot lead at Glen Oaks

Mike Goodes opened the Principal Charity Classic by sticking all of his approaches next to the cup and tapping in for easy birdies.

Knowing such good fortune was unlikely to last, Goodes put it out of his mind and finished Friday's opening round of the Principal Charity Classic nearly as well as he started it.

Goodes shot a 7-under 64 to take a two-shot lead at Glen Oaks Country Club. Jay Haas, who won in Iowa in 2007 and 2008, leads a group at 5-under 66 that includes South African David Frost and former Masters champion Larry Mize.

Goodes opened his round with four straight birdies. He nearly had two more on Nos. 5 and 6 and he closed with back-to-back birdies on the 17th and 18th holes. Goodes shot a 30 on the front nine and matched his lowest overall score on the Champions Tour.

"Just tried to play after that because you know you don't want to start thinking about how good you are after four (holes)," Goodes said. "You're not going to finish too good then."

Haas opens 3-stroke lead in Iowa

Only Jay Haas knows what it's like to take the biggest lead in Principal Charity Classic history into the final round.

Haas handled the pressure of an equally large cushion just fine five years ago, so the odds for an unprecedented third Champions Tour title in Iowa are certainly in his favor.

Haas will carry a three-shot lead into the final round at Glen Oaks Country Club after shooting a bogey-free 6-under 65 on Saturday.

Haas also led by three after two rounds when he won the senior event in Iowa in 2007. He repeated as champion in 2008 by rallying from two strokes down in the final round.

''It wasn't comfortable then. It probably won't be comfortable now. But it beats being three behind I guess,'' Haas said.

Larry Mize eagled the 18th hole to get within three of Haas at 8-under 134. Tom Lehman is four strokes back, followed by Andrew Magee at 6 under.

Fred Funk and Kenny Perry lead four players at 5-under 137.

Lehman, Funk share 2nd-round lead

THE WOODLANDS, Texas (AP) -- Fred Funk's game is rounding into form just in time for the thick of the Champions Tour season.

He wouldn't mind kick-starting his summer with a victory in early May, either.

Funk shot a 3-under 69 in sweltering heat Saturday for a share of the second-round lead with Tom Lehman in the Insperity Championship.

"I'm playing really good. I'm really pleased with where I am," Funk said. "I'm doing all the stuff I need to do. I'm really excited about where I am, regardless of what happens (Sunday), with all the big stuff coming up."

Lehman followed his opening 65 with a 70 to match Funk at 9-under 135 on The Tournament Course at The Woodlands. Funk is seeking his first Champions Tour win since the 2010 Tradition and he can tack on a unique distinction along with it.

Funk won the 1992 Houston Open on this course, and he can become the first player to win a regular tour event and a Champions Tour title at the same place since Tom Watson won

Mize fires 62, leads ACE Group Classic

Larry Mize played a stunning first round on what he called a perfect day for golf, shooting a 10-under 62 on Friday to take a two-stroke lead in the Champions Tour's ACE Group Classic.

Mize holed a 35-foot eagle putt on the par-5 17th and birdied No. 18. He hit 12 of 14 fairways, all 18 greens in regulation and had just 27 putts.

''It was an ideal day to play golf,'' said the 53-year-old Mize, the 2010 Montreal Championship winner for his lone title on the 50-and-over tour.

Tom Lehman, the player of the year last season, was second along with Kenny Perry and 2011 Senior British Open champion Russ Cochran. Mike Goodes, who won the qualifier Tuesday, was another stroke back at 65.

''It's amazing,'' Perry said. ''You can shoot 64 and be two behind. Typical day on the Champions Tour.''

Only three of Mize's eight birdies came on putts inside 10 feet. He holed a 25-footer on No. 7 and a 45-footer on No. 11.
