Apparently, the UFC is making even more money during bad economic times. Dana White and Lorenzo Fertitta say that the reason they get even more sales is that in tough times, people need entertainment to soothe their souls, and watching UFC on pay-per-view is a cheap form of entertainment. Most people reading this are likely to have read the news report that Affliction and Golden Boy are partnering up to co-promote MMA and boxing events on the same card. To summarize the news, it goes something like this : ( Golden Boy and Affliction will partner 50-50 on at least four pay-per-view shows next year that will include boxing matches and MMA fights on the same card. As part of its deal with Golden Boy, Affliction will produce a line of event T-shirts for Golden Boy fights to sell at retail locations and at the fight. The first fight it will make shirts for is the Dec. 6 match between Golden Boy boss Oscar De La Hoya and Manny Pacquiao. In addition, Affliction will become the official apparel licensee for Ring Magazine, which Golden Boy bought last year. It unveiled several sample T-shirts featuring old covers of Ring magazine, including ones of Sugar Ray Robinson. ) Because there is surprisingly small overlap between the boxing and MMA fanbase, putting boxing and MMA fights on the same PPV is an iffy proposition. If they in fact decide to go through with the initial plan, both Golden Boy and Affliction would have to identify the basic appeal factors of boxing, MMA, their promotional aspects and put together a well-presented show in order to build a profitable venture. It is just amazing to me that one fight could so significantly change one person's viewpoint on a fighter, but that same fight has no effect on the thoughts of the same fighter in the eyes of other fans. I freely admit that Fedor Emelianenko made a believer out of me. Not only has Fedor convinced me that he is the best fighter in the world, I am now coming to his defense since there are still people out there that don't believe in his dominance as a fighter.

Fedor Emelianenko will defend his newly won World Association of Mixed Martial Arts heavyweight championship belt on Oct. 11 against Andrei Arlovski in the UFC's backyard.

Affliction's second MMA promotion will be at the Thomas & Mack Center on the UNLV campus, in the shadow of the UFC's corporate offices, according to a venue official.

Affliction made its promotional debut last Saturday at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif., with Emelianenko submitting ex-UFC heavyweight champion Tim Sylvia in just 36seconds.

This is some amazing news and a fight I've been wanting to see for a long time. Sambo vs. Sambo!

With hooligans causing the latest soccer riot in Russia at a Premier League soccer match between Zenit St. Petersburg and Lokomotiv Moscow, I am convinced that Russians are the craziest race on Earth. You may have seen the crazy supermarket brawl and Fedor Emelianenko's spanking of Tim Sylvia. However, Russians don't fail to top those insane events by offering us their latest in soccer hooliganism. Believe me, getting your ass kicked by Fedor by in the ring has got to hurt real bad for Sylvia, but he'll feel different if he gets jumped by one of those hooligan mobs. With those guys, you're lucky if you just get punched and stomped. You could even get hit with steel pipes or even stabbed or shot. Those 50-on-50 brawls on YouTube are absolutely nuts. Don't get me wrong, this is not an impression formed by the recent events. From Maria Sharapova's grunts to Andrei Kirilenko's up-and-down sequence of balling to bawling to back to balling and ex-KGB President Vladimir Putin personally authorizing the naturalization of J.R. Holden, Russians are showing that they are a crazy, but magnificent people.
